Tigers Hire A.J. Hinch As New Tigers Manager and New Coaches

https://totallytigers.wordpress.com/2021/04/07/would-you-rather-14/
WOULD YOU RATHER?.?
Totally Tigers

Have you ever played the game Would You Rather?..?
You?re given 2 choices. There is a dilemma to be solved and you must determine which side of the coin you prefer. Your mission? You must choose only one.
Each week, we will offer you a new choice to consider. Please vote on your selection, explain your decision should you desire and then come back throughout the day to see where other fans stand. At the end of the day, check to see which option won.
Let?s kick this off!

The Tigers have entered the world of innovation with the hire of A.J. Hinch as manager and his philosophy on all aspects of the game. When it comes to how he views the bullpen, there are no set roles. He needs pitchers to be ready to come in at any time and get outs. He has not chosen a closer but when or if he does, that pitcher could be called upon at any time to calm a storm that may mean the difference between winning and losing at the end of the game.
So what do you think about Hinch?s philosophy on the bullpen.

Would you rather?.?

1. A.J. Hinch names a closer.

2. Hinch should continue to manage the bullpen the way he has up to this point.

No offense to that website but it's a dumb question. Who cares if he names a closer or not. It's probably better that he doesn't.. add more stress to a guy you don't need.

Some good news on the COVID front today?
Tigers? pitching coach Chris Fetter was cleared to rejoin the team, per the Athletic?s Cody Stavenhagen (via Twitter). Fetter tested positive for coronavirus at the end of March, and he?s been away from the team since. He will re-join the club for their upcoming series in Cleveland.

Spencer Turnbull is throwing and will soon move to the Tigers? alternate site, tweets Stavenhagen. When he does return, the Tigers could consider moving to a six-man rotation. Turnbull developed a bit of a niche following this offseason as a guy with some breakout potential, but that was obviously tempered somewhat when news broke of his positive test on March 20th. The Tigers will be glad to welcome him back to the rotation.

REALITY CHECK.

Oh, my, not even a week into the new season, Tiger fans are in full panic mode. A sweep by Cleveland sent them over the edge.

A dire prediction of another 100-loss season. Laments about how the team will never have any offense.

Forecasts of Michael Fulmer never having another good year. Even Miggy, washed up after only 5 games.

And the manager? He will flee, they say, when he realizes what a dumpster fire this organization is.

And others ? too many ? who claim that no matter how much talent the team accumulates, the owner and GM will undermine the entire roster and doom the organization to eternal failure.

Wow, tough crowd.

OK, but I kinda get it. It?s a little extreme, but I get it.

Tiger fans have PTSD. Phear of Tigers? Systematic Demise.

The first signs making their appearance in late 2015 and picking up speed since 2017.

Granted, this has been a very loooong rebuild. Some say 5+ years. Others, 4 years.

And that is why many fans feel so anxious, so desperate and so negative.

They?ve been suffering for too long. Their patience is exhausted.

Which is why they are now pushing. Putting unreal expectations upon this team to perform. Insisting, for example, that this new manager and his coaches perform miracles and show immediate results the very first week of games.

Show me anywhere else in the world where someone brand new has accomplished this. And if they have, they were probably fast-tracked to sainthood.

But I have a different read on what has happened (or not) to this team since the departure of Dave Dombrowski.

And I think you?ll agree with me.

The rebuild is only starting this year......

HALF A CHANCE.

If you wanted, you could easily say this about A.J. Hinch: He?s seen this before.

You could say that, couldn?t you? But he hasn?t.

He had a hand in a couple 90+ loss seasons in Arizona, but gleaning anything from those is difficult. Houston is where he should be judged.

The Astros brought him aboard to manage the team heading into the last stage of the rebuild and they were ready to win.

They had no 100-loss seasons under his watch. They began their rise when he arrived.

The experience was far different in Houston. Momentum was building. But in Detroit, there is degradation as the emotions range from apathy to panic.

But A.J. cannot concern himself with that. That?s for Chris Ilitch to think about. And so far, he doesn?t seem to care.

And Al Avila? He is doing his best and you know the rest. It?s far, far, far from good enough. He has been at a complete disadvantage when it comes to making deals with other teams. So much so that every single deal has done close to nothing for his team.

So much so that every single time we try to make a case for someone to be dealt, we are reminded about who will be making that deal. And then that enthusiasm fades away.

And that?s no way to follow a rebuild. Trades, signings and all transactions are in the hands of our GM and we can?t trust him to help the Tigers.

Isn?t that a lousy situation to be in? Is that something A.J. Hinch has seen before? I am going to say no.

Every single day he is learning more and more about his team, which he can impact and learning more and more about his organization, which he can try to impact, but you can?t expect it.

THE CLOCK IS TICKING.

There?s been a rumor out there about A. J. Hinch ever since he was hired.
A rumor about his contract.

And, of course, the 2 major local papers never reported it.

But other national writers have.

First of all, there are lots of rumors out there. Some true, some not. And for me, the condition of reporting it must rely upon at least 2 highly-reputable sports journalists putting it in print.

Let?s just say that I had a lot of digging to do.

But now I can write about it.

First of all, Hinch has a 3-year contract with the team. (The organization refused to reveal that information.) It?s still unknown if there is an option year which gives the team the power to retain him.

But it also appears that A. J. is only the third manager in history to have an opt-out clause in his contract. Joe Maddon was the first, followed by Terry Francona, 10 and 6 years ago respectively.

And what does that clause say?

That Hinch can opt out of his contract if ?expectations are not met.?

The Detroit Tigers simply didn't hire A. J. Hinch because he was available. Certainly best friend Scott Bream was a major factor. But it was reported that the Tigers also wanted a manager who could evaluate talent and develop players.

In addition to managing, Hinch's resume includes being the manager of minor league operations, head of scouting and director of player development.

THE SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The Saturday Survey offers the opportunity to weigh in on a relevant topic.
So here is a poll to gauge the pulse of our passionate readers.

Today, we center the discussion on the Tiger manager and his coaches and how much credit they should get for the success on the field.

As always, we welcome your comments, so please vote and then submit your reasons (4 sentences max!) for how you voted in the usual comment box. Don?t forget to come back later and view the results!

The Detroit Tigers had their first winning month in 4 years. After a horrendous start to the year, the team performed well in May and have taken 1 out of 2 series so far in June. They have remained competitive in games with a number of close scores and extra inning games. They have also established a pattern of being able to come back late in games which they haven?t done in previous rebuilding years.

Analysts are saying that the Tigers are performing better than expected so far. And other than the signing of regular Robbie Grossman, the roster, for the most part, remains essentially the same as last year. Many are giving A. J. Hinch and his coaches credit for the team?s improvement.

But what do you say, Tiger fans? How much credit do you give the new manager and coaches for what we?re seeing on the field?

How much credit do you give the new manager and coaches for what we?re seeing on the field?

1. The majority of the credit.

2. A good amount of credit.

3. Some credit.

4. A little credit.

5. No credit.
