I think this is another issue of DD doing more then he needs to.

We need a real backup at catcher and either a full time LF or a platoon mate for Dirks/Berry/Boesch, plus probably a starting pitcher and at minimum 1 arm for the bullpen.

Forget Drew, because Peralta is not going to net much in a trade anyways, and then we still have somewhat of a hole at SS cause Drew is so unpredictable.

Personally I think it's smoke and mirrors so we (and the rest of MLB) think that's all the Tigers have cooking, and outta nowhere they'll land a couple big names.

maybe a healthy Drew, not like DL drew his brother.
and Santiago seemed to have aged 5 years this season. maybe from not playing winter ball before ST.
I'm not really sold on this,

The problem is that he's never healthy. They seemed to think Arizona would be all over Peralta as SS or 3B. We'll see.

I'd love Tulo, but his contract scares me. He's signed through '20 or '21, I believe. That deal could look REALLY bad if he continues catching the injury bug.

im still hoping we sign Shoppach. theres so many options for either full time LF or a platoon guy for dirks that i have no idea who i even want. maybe Ross for platoon? victorino maybe for full time?

As Thumb said could just be a smoke screen for other deals. I'm still holding out hope that they deal Porcello and Boesch to fill some of the holes he mentioned. Then sign Sanchez and fill in whatever else is left after.

Are there any defensive stud SS's with iffy bats available out there? I'd be fine replacing JP with a weaker hitter if the guy had amazing range at short. A guy that hits .220 with little pop but can dig balls out behind 2nd and cover Cabby more is more valuable than a statue at short that hits .260 with 15-20 homers IMO.

I was listening to Caputo the other day and he didn't sound even a tad concerned about the backup Catcher going into 2013. He was spouting off that the Tigers were "loaded" in the minors on their Catchers and one of them will back up AA next year.

I don't follow the Tigers minor system enough to know. Anyone?

I remember the one dude they brought up to play last year dropped like 2 easy pop flies in the same inning. He looked lost out there.

Yeah it was him. He had a terrible game but then got the walk off win.


Detroit Tigers catcher Omir Santos was embarrassed.

A third-string catcher pressed into duty because of injuries, Santos was playing arguably the worst game in his 12-year professional career.

Five stolen bases allowed. Two errors.

If he was looking to make a name for himself in what is expected to be a short stint with the Tigers, he was doing a far better job earning more fans from New York than Detroit.

?I was trying to forget all of that stuff that happened in the game,? he said.

Most of the 44,000-plus fans in attendance had likely never heard of Santos prior to Saturday night.

Still, that didn?t stop the boisterous crowd from showering the soft-spoken 31-year-old with enough boos to fill the Chevrolet Fountain in center field after his ninth-inning gaffe.

?There?s no excuse,? he said. ?I saw it when it went up, but I wasn?t even close. You have to make that catch.?

The ninth-largest crowd in Comerica Park?s 13-year history was on hand to witness Santos? breakdown Saturday night. It was embarrassing, he said.

And, he deserved it. He should?ve made the catch.

With two outs in the ninth inning and the game tied at 3-all, he needed to make the routine play on Raul Ibanez's popup in foul territory to help Jose Valverde escape another late-inning jam.

He called off first baseman Prince Fielder. It was his catch to make. And he didn?t.

?There?s no excuse,? he said. ?You have to make that catch.?

Instead, Santos' second error granted Ibanez another chance to drive in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning with the bases loaded.

Fortunately for Santos, Ibanez bit on Valverde?s slider two pitches later, batting into an inning-ending groundout that prevented New York from taking its first lead of the game.

?I was just trying to get (Valverde) through the inning,? Santos said. ?And thank God we did.?

The error didn?t prove costly, and with three other batters slated to hit before him in the bottom of the ninth ninth, Santos had crossed his fingers for a chance at redemption.

?I was praying for God to give me an opportunity,? he said.

Brennan Boesch hit a one-out single in the ninth off David Phelps and went to third on a single by Jhonny Peralta.

When Santos saw Phelps run up a 2-0 count to pinch-hitter Ramon Santiago, he knew his prayer had been answered.

Knowing that the Tigers were fresh out of catchers with both Gerald Laird and Alex Avila nursing hamstring injuries, acting manager Tony Pena elected to intentionally walk Santiago to get to Santos.

"I saw that Pena was going to walk him, and I said, ?Thank you,'" Santos said. "I knew I was going to get it done. I was praying I got to the plate. I wanted that at-bat."

The first pitch he saw from Logan was a slider that was called for a strike.

He didn't like it. He wanted something high. Something he could get in the air.

The second pitch Logan threw was a four-seamer that was chest high. Bingo.

"I had a feeling that if I got an at-bat, I was going to be the hero," he said. "I don?t know why, but I had that feeling."

Santos lifted the ball to right center. It wasn't anything special, but it was enough to drive in Boesch from third to score the game-winning run.

"I had to change this game around," he said. "And, I did."

McCann, Murrian, and Casali, Luis Sanz (might have lost him)edit lost to pirates today, and a young kid in the VSL Franklin Navarro,
might be one or two I'm missing,
no one that has future starter written on him, imo.

If this guy is even on the spring training list someone needs to be fired.

We would be better off with Bryan Holaday, but not by much. We don't have anyone in the farm system ready for the majors.

I'm with you, Tony. I can't stand Caputo and usually have to turn the channel within a couple minutes of trying to listen to him. He'll draw ridiculous conclusions, bullies callers, and is just tough to listen to.

Just going off what I've read, but McCann is supposedly very good defensively and with the game calling. I'll take that from a backup over a "good" offensive catcher who might hit around .250 anyways.
