Tigers vs. a's ALDS Game Thread 2 Oct. 5

what does it matter if he is a 23 year old rookie or a 35 year old vet? He was great tonight. His curve balls were wicked and he was hitting his spots with his fastball.

He wasn't great enough to go shutting down a so called #1 offense with veteran all stars through 8 innings, no tom he wasn't that great...the offense is epic failing for the second straight year when it matters most

So JV wasn't great either. Their offense just didn't show up.

As much as it sucks 1-1 is fair.

We both scored and gave up the exact same number of runs in the series so far, so I really can't see saying we should be down 0-2 is any more logical than saying we should be up 2-0, I'll take the split.

Bottom line is we have 2 at home coming up and a good chance to finish them off, Sanchez is going to be just as tough on them, they can't match us starter for starter much longer.

The real problem is they don't have to match starter for starter should the Tigers offence not show up! Did the best starter win tonight?

Gray was good, but not great. Had a scoring opportunity where we gave 2 outs on one pitch without the batter even making contact. Discredit the Tigers offense a lot more than I credit Gray.

the same could be said for the A's batters vs. JV.

The A's offense is not my concern. The A's don't have the names in there lineup as does this alleged top tier offense, top tier starting pitching staffs are supposed to shut down good offensive teams, non top tier pitching aren't supposed to shut down top tier offense, sorry man gray was not 8 shutdown inning good againts this offense, the offense beats themselfs when the pressure is on, they can't handle it apperntly, over thinking putting to much pressure on themselfs, in thier own heads, they did it last year and they are doing it again this year

The fact is that this is now a best of 3 series with 2 games in Detroit. Good situation, but not confident in our guys at all.

Tonight was the 13th time we've been shut out this year, and the sixth time we've lost 0-1.

Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.

No it really is win two at home or face them at there place again. And that how the A's will approch the games in Detroit get the split and win it at home then. Unless the a's get the monday game then it's win at all costs!

TBS post game show ask this question why load the bases and bring in Porcello when the strikeout from your Closer would set up the DP later in the inning? Don't you want your best pitcher in at that point? Don't you want a pitcher that is use to doing that job?

Absolutely it was great to steal one out there, all you can ask for..very pleased with that, but understand it's not that we didn't take both and go up 2 games to none, rather it's that the offense is so concerning it just doesn't provide any confidence at all that this isn't going to end badly again this year, I mean shit we have to throw shutouts just to give ourselves a chance to win, and it's not just post season baseball here folks this offense has been in the shithouse for well more than a month, they got no hit against a 100 loss team to finish the regular season FFS, they scored 8 total runs againts the #29rh ranked pitching staff in the series before that..it's just been gawd awful

Seriously don't even pick up a bat until Monday game time and go clear your heads tiger hitters!

I can't get over how much people are whining about Al/Rick/Leyland and ignoring the hitters. I know it's not everyone, but I don't get how anyone could be most bothered by that.

My only issue with it is that Leyland had a chance to atleast give the team a chance to bat in the 10th, but he kept AA in to give up 2 singles and then walked the bases loaded before yanking him. I think we all agree there are several better options than AA to begin with. It's the playoffs, and not using your best options is inexcusable to me. However, the offense put Leyland in a situation he fails a lot at.

Yea there two sides to ever game. Yea the hitters muck the game up.The only real thing that a manager has to do with the offence is who is in the lineup. Which in truth is a big deal. But it's the relief pitching that a manager really has the most control of who in and who not in the time when the game is on the line.
Bottom line leyland made a bad move on both sides of the game tonight. The DP strikeout out stealing play was the worst I've seen in a many of games. Walking the bases loaded neves seems to work. You give the pitcher no options he throws strikes or walks in a run!
The offence is really a hugh concern there is no one getting on base any more let alone get a hit.

IMO the pitching has done it's job. Even better than most everone else in the playoffs so far this playoff season.

To be fair the offence should get the blame for not winning this winable game. And Leyland should get some blame for not getting the pitching right in the 9th of a winnable game.

Its much easier to blame the manager, sometimes you just tip your hat to the other team.

There was a reason why the game was scoreless in the ninth inning -- great pitching.

Justin Verlander struck out 11 batters in seven innings, while Sonny Gray struck out nine in eight innings.

Verlander and Max Scherzer are the first pair of teammates in postseason history with at least 11 strikeouts in back-to-back games.

Gray is the fifth rookie pitcher in postseason history with at least eight scoreless innings in his first career postseason start, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Gray is one of two rookie pitchers in history (Mike Boddicker, 1983 White Sox) with at least eight scoreless innings and nine strikeouts in his first career postseason start.

It was the first game in postseason history in which both starters had at least nine strikeouts and no runs allowed.
