Tigers vs. Athletics April 18, 2021 Game 16

As far as the Tigers, he is actually trying to fix what his dad and DD fucked up. He is taking longer than most would like, and perhaps going about it differently than what some would like, but make no mistake, he inherited a huge mess.

I don't have a clue about the hockey team, but I am going to guess that Mr I mortgaged the future trying to win a championship with that franchise as well.
But I don't give a shit about hockey so I really don't care.

DD builds winners at the expense of his farm system. I'd prefer the DD years to this garbage.

Detroit consistently ranked at or near the top 10 in attendance in the league for a decade The city supports a winner.

During their run of "success" from 2006-2016 they had 6 seasons where the attendance was in the top 10. Their average ranking was 11

that includes 5 playoff appearances, 4 division winners, and 2 WS appearances.

Coming off 2003 DD signed Rondell White (all star in 03) and Pudge. Does anyone see Al making a move like that? No one is expecting them to pull out the stops for Lindor or something. Just a reasonable move towards legitimacy.

Someone mentioned CI is always going to be a bottom line guy? To me thats absurd. There are much better investments than a baseball team for year to year income. Sports teams are about legacy and wealth.

well, this is the effect of the DD years. You can only mortgage the future so long.

It's like a young person with a credit card at a club...drinks for everyone! It's fun at the time...but at some point you have to pay up.

There's no need for italics. It was a successful run. They fell short of a title. The team that was built was capable of winning one. Players and coaches still have to execute.

Well, CI?s payroll is 24 in MLB, 80 million, and 30 million to one guy, who he inherited. The Tigers are worth 2 billion, approximately. One Miggy is gone, CI will not, IMO ever get the payroll above league average.

And I learned a lot about his fiscal philosophy in an extended discussion with him in March of 2008, just after his pop bumped the payroll 40 million over 07. He was not pleased and was concerned whether or not ?we can pay for it.? So, my opinion is influenced somewhat.

Precisely my point. Sell the team and go invest in something else Chris. You aren't cut out to be an owner.

$50M, $100M, $150M, it doesn't matter...the Tigers aren't contending no matter the amount of money they spend without significant contributions from home grown talent. They need to focus on the farm system first, then dip into the FA pool.

They aren't contending because they spend no money. This is MLB you can't get by without spending money. If your reasoning is this team is in a rebuild and use draft only then no reason for anyone to complain. They do exactly what you want them to do. We can't compete just because we have Mize and Skubal.

As an entity the Tigers are very small when compared to other Ilitch holdings. I get they want to make a profit but they have lots and lots of cash. Forbes has Marian Ilitch at 3.7B.

right...but what's the point of spending money on good free agents just so they can win 60 or 70 games? You are just wasting money. Build the farm system, get some of the younger guys up to the show, then start spending some money on free agents that might get you above .500

As I pointed out previously with DD in 03 to 04 you have to start somewhere. Get a clubhouse guy or two to provide some leadership. This team has no one but Miggy and I don't think anyone has ever accused him of being a tremendous leader.

The free agent market is exceptionally top heavy which allows for some bargains at the guys the notch down. They don't even make an effort to sign those guys. They scrape the bottom for guys who have no long term liability. It's dumb AF

I think Miggy is a terrible leader. So you are right, they could use a leader in the clubhouse.

Here are the FA signings from last year. Who did the Tigers miss out on (assuming they would have signed with the Tigers)?

I never considered Cabrera a leader, even when the team was good. Martinez, Peralta, Avila, Verlander, and Scherzer were leaders, based on my distant and uninformed opinion.
