Tigers vs. Red Sox May 4, 2021 Game 30

Wasn't aware of the Illitch gambling connection until I read that piece, which just angers me even more...in fact one hell of a lot more. So that also answers what this "Bally" change from FSD was all about.

Fuck this sorry-ass franchise...I won't spend a thin dime on merch or attendance until or if this cravenly corrupt family sells it!! Same goes for their pizza empire!! No "Little Caesars" here!!

Gambling is something that I have intentionally avoided doing my entire adult life...I know ppl who have squandered tens if not hundreds of thousands on it. I have been in a casino just once. I even rarely have bought MI lottery tix ever since it began here in 1974.

to each their own. Personally, I love to gamble but I don't do it very often because...well, I usually lose.

if he had any integrity, he would retire and tell the Tigers to keep 1/2 of what he is owed.

The Tigers still owe him $96M.

I can't buy into that. I expect players to honor their contract and not cry if the team isn't "good".

I expect the team to do the same if the player isn't, as well.

An agreement between the two sides would be best. Let him play out the year and receive the adulation he deserves across the league. He is one of the greatest right-handed hitters of all time.

But he is hurting a team that is already terrible on offense......and taking a roster spot of a more deserving player.

By that statement, teams should pay more money to players who's performance exceeds their salary, regardless of what was agreed upon.

I expect that some ?inner-room? discussions have or will take place to rectify this imbalance. Cabrera appears to be done, and I will be surprised if he?s back next season.

I would love it if every player were to be paid purely by their performance, regardless of age or years in the league. That would be awesome!

He will 100% be back next year. He isn't walking away from $72M...plus, he will still be looking for hit # 3,000

Miggy will still be looking for hit #3K in 2023...if the Tigers don't buy him out by then.

They get a certain minimum guaranteed. Say the league minimum. Then, there are metrics (I think they are available now) that are evaluated at intervals and compensation is awarded based on them. Players can ?draw? more salary based on projected performance that they may have to refund if they fall below the prescribed KPIs. The same goes for ?withholding? pay until the end of the season, if they choose not to get compensated immediately for above-projected performance.

This could be really interesting.

Ilitch might be a great businessman, but he is a piss poor owner of a sports franchise that once was part of our "national pasttime". There were acres of empty seats during home games @ CoPa the year before the pandemic hit. If he refuses to field @ least a competitive product b/c he deems it unnecessary in profiting from sportsbooks, gambliing, and MLB profit sharing, then move the franchise to Vegas and let us Detroit baseball fans enjoy a new expansion team (whiile retaining the name and unis) owned by someone else who gives a flying fuck about the product!!

Exactly. They could also create some "incentives" in a way that improve competitive balance. How a player ranks on their team in certain statistical categories may drive some better free agent players to go to bad teams.

Lead your team in hits = $500K (or whatever number that makes sense)
HRs = $500K
pitchers strikeouts = $500K

but, it really is just a business.

Teams, families, businesses, government agencies budget by known or expected costs. This method would never be able to be implemented. Ever. Utopia is a nice concept.

Yeah...well...I have never stepped into a bank and expected them to provide me with (competitive) entertainment. Or a Doctor/Dentist office for that matter. If they ran their casino like he does the Tigers, then its likely that not many people would want to gamble, dine, and/or stay overnight there.

it would never get implemented because the players union would never let it happen.

as far as expected cost...they could set it up in a way that they could estimate what their costs would be using stats from prior seasons. It wouldn't be that difficult.

The Tigers are on the hook for 90 million with Cabrera, I?m not positive that they budgeted for that.

It's entertainment so they are competing with other forms of entertainment. I think there are 4 casinos in Detroit. They are competing with them, so if they ran their casino poorly they would quickly lose business. The Tigers have very little competition.

If consumers "consume" the product and they can make money, it is a viable business. It's up to the consumer to quit consuming. Like I said in an earlier post, that time will come...where enough fans quit watching and quit going to the games which will force their hand. Until that happens they have no incentive to change what they are doing.

All 4 of Detroit's pro-sports teams have been @ or near the bottom of their respective sport/league for several years now. That hasn't happened very often in history, as there is usually at least one who is competitive, if not contending in any given year. So the Tigers have had competition in the Spring/Fall b/c the Lions only play 8 games @ Ford Field per season.

However, I can't see the Tigers ever completely losing more than ~65% of their fanbase in any given season. Detroit has always supported their pro-teams through thick and thin. Chris Ilitch s/b able to continue with making empty promises for an indefinite period of time...perhaps even encompassing years, while profiting bigly from "other" income streams as mentioned upthread.
