Detroit Tigers left-hander Drew Smyly made his debut last Thursday in front of a home crowd that was attended by 20 close friends and family members.
He'll make his second career start Tuesday on the road, but it still might have a similar home feel to it.
Born in Maumelle, Ark., Smyly will start Tuesday for the Tigers against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. It’s about three-hour drive from the University of Arkansas, the college Smyly attended.
“It’s a short trip from where I went to school,” Smyly said. “I’ll have a good amount of people that will be driving up for it.”
Smyly made his debut last Thursday, allowing one run, four hits and three walks in the Tigers' 7-2 victory over Tampa Bay.
He survived a shaky first inning, giving up two walks and a single to his first three batters, but escaped without giving up damage. He forced his own exit after throwing 90 pitches through four-plus innings and left without a win in reach.
The Royals (3-7) are trying to avoid their first six-game skid since June 18-24. The Tigers won the series opener Monday against the Royals, 3-2, on the heels of Justin Verlander's complete game.
The Tigers have won 11 of the last 16 games against the Royals and are 36-19 at Kauffman Stadium since Jim Leyland took over as manager.
Andy Dirks has been tabbed Monday's designated hitter, despite a left-hander slated to start. Of the six games Dirks has appeared in this season, he’s started five as the club’s DH.
Ramon Santiago will start at shortstop and spell Jhonny Peralta, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles Monday. Peralta is 2-for-18 with four strikeouts in his career against Chen.
Ryan Raburn -- who is in the midst of an early-season slump -- will start at second. He's hitting 0.65 with no extra-base hits in 32 at-bats.
Austin Jackson will look to extend his American League-leading .511 on-base percentage after reaching base safely in every game this season.
Reminder: Tonight’s game is on FOX Sports Detroit-plus because a scheduling conflict with the Detroit Red Wings-Nashville Predators playoff game.
