Tigers vs. twins Game Thread April 3

this is no surprise. The bull pen is not good. get used to this kind of game. It isn't on Leyland...it is on DD not getting any BP help in the off season.

Leyland yanked Downs for Villarreal, who soon proceeded to give up a run, then brought in & kept Coke in to pitch the 9th vs the LH Parmalee and then the RHers Dozier & Escobar, with predictable results...when Benoit likely should just have been left in the game to finish it, win or lose. He does have his fingerprints all over this walkoff loss, IMO.

The only guy on this team I trust 100% to finish a game is Al. Great splits against BOTH righties and lefties. If he's gonna get hurt agian, he might as well do it in the 9th.

Ill post more later while not at work, but here are my 2 cents for now:

1) the offense was shit today. They need to pick it up, especially against shitty pitching.

2) fuck you leyland, you senile old fuck. Anyone but you with 2 functioning brain cells knows that Coke CANNOT be allowed to face righites.

IF this closer by committee fails ~half of the time, that obviously won't be anywhere nearly enough for the Tigers to continue to seriously contend pre-ASB, much less post-ASB. If the Tigers brass waits until "closer" to the trade deadline to address this potential problem, or instead pins its hopes on Rondon's finally becoming polished and seasoned enough to be ready for his call-up in the minors, it might be waay too late by then.

Besides Coke the walks killed us. Their first run came from a walk. Benoits walk to start the ninth proved to be a killer.

We lost this game because of several factors, poor offensive showing, bad baserunning decision by Hunter, our pitchers giving up walks, poor bullpen usage by Leyland.

The fact we don't have a guy with his name on the plaque that reads "Closer" is not one of them.

Tigers have a few of Hispanic heritage in the lineup, so I am pretty sure that the cold is very disagreeable and uncomfortable for them. Seems like Fielder hates it too, and especially Miggy. Perhaps Jackson and Dirks had trouble with Escobar's flyball b/c of the sun, which was hit further than any of the Tigers batters have managed to muster. I feel that Leyland should have reversed roles with Coke and Benoit, with Phil pitching setup in the 8th with LH hitters Mauer and Morneau scheduled to bat. Willingham is a RHB, but Coke is quite capable of walking him just like Benoit had, and might have got Morneau to GIDP.

Tigers pitchers have already given up a dozen walks in only two games, while the Tigers lineup has managed to "patiently" coax only four from the Twins pitching. That stat really sticks out, as does that lack of hard hit balls into the OF. The Tigers could easily be 0-2, just as they should be 2-0.

You know what bugs me most? Leyland uses splits, often with tiny-ass sample sizes, all the time on offense to determine hitter matchups and days off. So why the fuck does he ignore Coke's numbers against righties (and Dotel's against lefties for that matter)? Its fucking stupid, and it makes zero sense.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling. Wow, 2 games into the season and all the chicken littles come out. I have an idea lets go get Rodney because he was always great for us and we all loved him. While we're at it we better get Joyce to bail us out when Rodney blows one and get Maddon to replace Leyland when we fire him. We will all love Maddon because he puts out the same lineup every night. Wtf, it may take a couple months or a couple weeks for the bullpen to sort itself out but I'm pretty sure there is enough talent on the team where we won't fall too far behind if we fall behind at all

Sort itself out? Where the fuck have you been, bro? This has been an ongoing problem for awhile now.

You want to see Coke going up against righties all year? Good for you...my 12 year old stepdaughter knows better than that. No offense, but you're obviously new, right? Leyland is a fn joke...sorry but its true.

Whats the point of posting on a sports message board if you can't vent over an ugly loss, or celebrate a great win by the team you root for, with other fans. There are very likely hundreds of thousands of Tigers fans all over the US, but only some hundreds or low thousands of die-hards like us even bother to become members on online sports forums, apparently, Besides, I don't see any posts here claiming that the Tigers season is all but over and is a total bust already.

I have been right here for both games bro, and no I don't think Coke is the answer at closer that's why I said bullpen. 2 games is not awhile.

He meant the issue with Coke not being able to get out righties. Its not a new thing to this year and Leyland should know better than to have used him like he did today.

Coke's righty splits
BA. Obp. Slug. OPS.
2010: .276 .355 .358 .713
2011: .314 .375 .431 .806
2012: .396 .446 .604 1.050

Again, I never thought Coke was the answer at closer and was shocked he was as successful as he was in the playoffs last year. My point was bullpens sometimes take awhile to get sorted out. Every year teams have to adjust there bullpens and you never know from year to year who is going to be successful in the bullpen. Who would have ever thought Grilli would be a closer. Yeah the loss sucked they all do but getting carried away this much this early just seems a little overly dramatic to me
