The stats I posted in Gulo's science thread about this say it's over 30 times as deadly as the flu, and kills around 3.4% of the people it infects; and even more critically, it spreads twice as fast.

Annual flu patients - even in bad years - don't overwhelm our hospitals; the American healthcare system, as shitty and dysfunctional as it is, can cope with the flu. Coronavirus on the other hand spreads so quickly and hospitalizes so many people with lung failure, that hospitals can't cope with it.

And as you pointed out, the death rates get a lot higher when it overwhelms the healthcare system and people start suffocating to death in their own blood because we don't have enough ventilators for them...

For every documented case in the US there will likely be 10 more people that got it and showed little or no symptoms at all and never got tested. These people will most likely be immune going forward. I heard on the news that there is supposed to be some finger prick test in the coming weeks that will be able to test you to see if you were exposed/had the disease.

as far as overwhelming the hospitals, this is true. From what I understand is because the very sick need vents. People that die from the flu don't need this treatment. Also, 100% of hospital workers get an annual flu shot, so they are not susceptible to get sick from people that have the flu. Hospital staff are getting sick which impacts their ability to treat.

As far as it being twice as contagious as the flu as some have stated...that might not be true either. Since about 50% of people get flu shots, those people probably aren't getting the flu. If 50% of the people got a corona shot it probably wouldn't be as contagious...probably...just a guess.

This has nothing to do with the death rates; I obviously don't know what they are, and no one has enough data to say for sure, but this doesn't disprove anything or offer any suggestions what it might be.

And their focus on disputing the death rates from this - whatever they turn out to be - misses the fact that if we don't "flatten the curve" and keep people isolated we WILL overwhelm the hospitals and a lot more people will die. And there's a huge cost to society in that alone that they're consciously ignoring.

It's telling that the same people who can rant about the sanctity of life and condemn women who choose to have an abortion, decide the value of human life is worth exactly NOTHING when weighed against the prospect of hurting consumer sales & Trump's re-election chances in November...
