Veras

There is one fact. Veras has the ability to positivly impact the team this year and next. There is no way that the player that was traded away will be able to help this team on the field over the next 2 seasons.

Of course. I'm just not all amped up about this one way or the other.

I like the deal. I was afraid that DD was going to pull the trigger for a "big name closer" that would require trading away Nick or Asvail. To me Veras comes in and contributes in the 7th or 8th innings depending on right handed or left handed batters coming up. Veras, Smyly & Benoit ending most games. Rondon becomes a guy you don't have to rely on late in games.

Well, maybe I'm wrong. I thought if anyone would back me up on this it would be Reb. I thought if we sent a Briceno or Mercedes it would be better. Vasquez is supposed to be our top hitting prospect behind Castellanos and Garcia. I just don't like giving up much for the bullpen

Scouts are betting on Vasquez' projectable frame (6'3" 170 lbs). He really hasn't demonstrated much, even if he is 19 years old (maybe older?). He is rated based on "potential", not based on "performance".

The soonest he might see the majors in 2016, with he best chance being 2017. That is assuming he develops.

This was a nothing trade. Veras walks too many and will probably cause heart attacks to the Tiger faithful. A loogy is trading for a reliever when it isn't necessary.

If we get a healthy Dotel and Downs back then we don't need another arm.

Our problem is we only get better by subtraction, not addition. If Phil Coke stays on the roster we're always going to have a weak spot in the bullpen.

Yep, this is his first year where is walk rate is below 4, let alone below 3 like it is now. Either he's found his control or its a fluke. Either way we didn't really give much of anything up (depending on who the PTBNL is), so its kind of whatevs for me. Reed must be going back to AAA. Can't think of who else we'd send down.

Like the move. I am all for giving up prospects, how often do they really pan out? Vasquez as a prospect is a dime a dozen, I'd guess probably 10% of guys his level make much of an impact at the major league level. Even our best prospect in Castellanos is at best 50% to become a good Major League player, good being an OPS of over .700 in my mind.

Loogy

Lefty
one
out
guy

scott downs for example, who just went to the braves

also, reb, I know you say he walks too many but has a 3/1 ratio, .585 OPS against. I know you'll look at 3yr road stats but i'd assume his numbers would translate bc minute made is tiny. we'll only get a small sample but I feel this trade makes us better, we put putkonen or Al B in AAA and our 25 man is better

Sbee. You are right. He has a great K/BB ratio. Anything above 2 is good, anything above 3 is great. OPP BAVG of .213. I get all of this. But he is just an older version of Bruce Rondon.

As most will know, I am a firm believer than relief pitching is the last piece to the puzzle. I don't mind this trade, depending on the PTBNL. I just find it as "eye wash". DD can say they tried to address their weakness.

What about LF? What about long term solutions at SS and/or 2B?

Left Only One Out Guy. = Coke But Leyland does not use him this way. Hence the waste. If you acquire Veras, then there should be no reason that Coke should ever face another righthander.

There is no reason to look at long term solutions at SS or 2B at the trade deadline. Take care of that during the off season.

As far as relief pitching being the last piece of the puzzle...the Tigers need to complete the puzzle and getting this guy makes the bull pen better.

The puzzle isn't getting to the playoffs. It is doing something when you get there. The Tigers DO NOT have a offense that can generate runs by working the count and wearing down the opposing pitchers. This is a bigger issue than have one more relief pitcher, who might make 1-2 win difference over the course of the season.

Lack of late inning offense has cost us the double amount of wins, as the relief pitching.

How often are long term solutions at SS and or 2B get addressed at the trade deadline..? You make a trade to help the team win, now. Not 4 years from now.

My thinking is that runs are runs, whether you score them via walks, homers, speed, etc. we're leading the majors in runs scored so I don't look at that as a glaring need. we can get good production out of a Tui/Dirks platoon in LF and Infante/JP up the middle.

we should add some minor pieces like Veras and maybe a LH reliever and then hope everyone stays healthy.
