The puzzle isn't getting to the playoffs. It is doing something when you get there. The Tigers DO NOT have a offense that can generate runs by working the count and wearing down the opposing pitchers. This is a bigger issue than have one more relief pitcher, who might make 1-2 win difference over the course of the season.

Lack of late inning offense has cost us the double amount of wins, as the relief pitching.

Okay, so how does a long term solution at SS and 2B help you do things once you get there? We already have MI starters.

1st in runs
8th in runs allowed

pretty damn good if you ask me.

+118 in run differential, only second to STL.

But the players that aren't producing late are up and down the line up. You can't replace everybody that has been bad close and late...we wouldn't have a team to root for!

Id be ok with a new LF, but 2b/ss can wait till the offseason imo.
As bad as Dirks has been our LF platoon has a .725 OPS. That's 7th out of 15 AL teams. AL average is .721.

...btw, catcher is BY FAR our worst offensive position based on OPS. CF is the only other one under the AL average.

situational hitting isn't a repeatable stat, nobody his consistently better in one situation than another.

we have the #1 offense in the game, creating runs isn't the problem. the fact that they have come more often early in games than late is a fluke.

the problem may continue but there is no way to correct it. runs in the 2nd count as much as runs in the 8th

Been saying this for weeks. I don't get how people really think our batters just turn off a switch after the 6th inning.

Also, Leyland tends to bunt far to often and put in defensive replacements late in games too.

those guys rarely bat unless the lead is given up and he never puts anyone in for fielder, Cabrera.

Ibanez from the mariners is an option at lf

I said that a few weeks ago. The only problem with that is his poor defense. I wouldn't mind it though. It would give them some different options as far as DH and create a good PH on the bench.

Not that I disagree with you, there are a lot of teams who would love to have those stats, but the problem with the Tigers is they seem to be feast or famine. If a pitcher isn't on his game they will light him up and inflate their runs scored stats. But when a pitcher is on his A game, and we aren't hitting bombs, we can't manufacture runs or work counts to get the guy out of the game, as Reb stated. And come playoff time, pitchers are usually on their game.

I'm sure if you watch any team you will come to the same conclusion. Teams feast on poor pitching and when they face great pitching they struggle to score runs.

Yet we're still 14 games over. It's not huge but its better than last year at this time and we're still in 1st. Which is really all that matters..

True. I'm sure someone will come up with a stat but all teams struggle at certain times.
