Veras

I'm sure if you watch any team you will come to the same conclusion. Teams feast on poor pitching and when they face great pitching they struggle to score runs.

But the point of Reb's post was that he doesn't doubt we're gonna get in the playoffs but what we do once we're there. We've been to two World Series in which our offense forgot to make an appearance. Different players but same type of make up. I do believe we are better than last year but I also agree with what Reb was talking about.

You forgot the rest of what Reb said, SS and 2B depth for the future. Like future MIF help will get playing time in the playoffs behind Jhonny P. and Infante.

I didn't forget, I just conveniently left it out of my post!

I love this move. We didn't give up anything. I believe we are heading into the playoffs with a better bullpen than last year. Problem I see as mentioned is the ability to score some runs in crunch time. We have yet to display it since last year playoffs.

My thinking is that runs are runs, whether you score them via walks, homers, speed, etc. we're leading the majors in runs scored so I don't look at that as a glaring need. we can get good production out of a Tui/Dirks platoon in LF and Infante/JP up the middle.

we should add some minor pieces like Veras and maybe a LH reliever and then hope everyone stays healthy.

Getting a starter out of the game is a weakness of this team if they are not "pounding" out hits.

They lead the league in runs scored, because they score 10-12 runs for 3 out of 10 games, and then cannot score more than 3 in half. Yes, the average those runs, but that is very misleading.

Allowing mediocre pitcher to have 5 pitch innings against DET should be classified as a crime. This same hitting approach (or lack thereof) is also what the team uses in innings 7-9 and Close/Late games.

All it takes is one game in a series where you get to the other team's bullpen. These depletes their ability to keep using certain relievers during that series. But, DET sucks even at that. How many times have they scored 8-10 runs early, only to allow a reliever to go 3+ innings without them scoring more runs?

If you do not see how this ineffective offense can be debilitating in a playoff series, I do not know how better to describe it. DET' offense is all smoke and mirrors. And FYI, Infante sucks at drawing walks and/or running the opposing pitcher's pitch count out. In fact, he is in the same league as Delmon Young.

How often are long term solutions at SS and or 2B get addressed at the trade deadline..? You make a trade to help the team win, now. Not 4 years from now.

Mitch....I wasn't necessarily looking to trade for long term SS and/or 2B solution at the trade deadline. You are inferring that.

Infante and Peralta are free agents after this year. When do you want to address those needs? After the barn door is closed. Trade pieces used now, might be more valuable during the offseason.

And yes, I believe finding players that can take a walk/work a count more of a pressing need than a dime a dozen relief pitcher.

I misread this: "What about LF? What about long term solutions at SS and/or 2B?"

My bad..

I think he is only signed for this year. He is better than Dirks IMO and wouldn't cost much.

2011-Present years Away

Dirks (27) .260 BAVG .315 OBP .378 SLG .693 OPS 5.2 UZR/150

Ibanez (41) .220 BAVG .272 OBP .369 SLG .641 OPS -14.5 UZR/150

I'm probably in the minority, but I'm mostly happy with that we have. LF could be better but the trade off is losing defense, and the occasional Tui bomb. Prince could do better and I hope he will. And if we get all the BP guys off the DL we should be solid there also.

Avila is a weak spot on offense, but it's clear the pitchers do much better when he's the backstop.

At this point i'm not really in favor of any move unless it's a big one that solidifies the middle IF for a long while, like landing a guy like Segura or Profar.

That would be perfect but guys like that don't get traded..

The puzzle isn't getting to the playoffs. It is doing something when you get there. The Tigers DO NOT have a offense that can generate runs by working the count and wearing down the opposing pitchers. This is a bigger issue than have one more relief pitcher, who might make 1-2 win difference over the course of the season.

Lack of late inning offense has cost us the double amount of wins, as the relief pitching.

Add to this Tigers have been shut out SEVEN times. FIVE times by scores of 3-0 or less, that five games had the offence showed up with a 4 spot a full run under there average they could have won.

IMO the pitching relief has given 2 to 3 games away Coke (2) Valverde (1) for sure. The offence too many. The Defence who knows for sure but I'll go 2-3 for the sake of argument. ESPN has them at 65-39 in expected W-L. That's 6 six games better than they are. Only two other teams are at 4. Tigers are leading in underperforming.

IMO it's the offence. Avlia has been a big downfall,Fielder of late has falling off. Dirks have been short in the batting average.A few injuries have been account of some shortness.Early in the season V-Mart was on my list. BUT lately has been hitting like more than most expected..427 so far in the month of July!! This should help Fielder. And then carry up to Cabrera, like he needs any help this season.

But the bottom line is 12 games the Tigers have scored 10 or more runs and been shutout SEVEN. Somewhere the Offence is not together for some reason?!

Offense is still the best in mlb

If Fielder can get it going (which I believe he will), then I really think the offense will be fine. A lineup centered around AJax, Hunter, Miggy, Fielder, VMart, and Peralta as your 1-6 really should be enough to get it done as long as the 7-9 guys aren't completely putrid. Even Avila has been turning it around lately, so maybe he won't be a complete waste of a spot in the batting order hopefully.

It is cliche, but baseball is about pitching first and foremost. The keys to the rest of the season and playoffs for me are as follows. Guys have to get/stay healthy, Verlander NEEDS to get back to at least resembling his former self, and the bullpen needs to become more reliable. I like the trade today very much.

best post here.

As for the trade, Veras is having a good year, and the K/BB is better than in the past. As long he continues to pitch like he has, he will help this team's bullpen, and hopefully next year.
Vasquez is 19 plus, his only projection is leftfield. The Tigers were able to deal him from one of there few, if only, position of minor league strength. From readin at prospects sites, two mentioned his attitude problem returned. His ETA would be mid/late2016 / 2017.

The Rangers will probably trade Profar in the offseason, they have both Kinsler and Andrus as stop gaps; Beltre at 3rd, and trying to force him in LF wont do his development any good.

They will trade Kinsler before Profar. Ian is approaching 30 and Profar is 20, and Profar is more versatile, while Kinsler can only play 2nd and 1st base. I'm actually hoping Detroit makes a play for Kinsler in the offseason.
