What's next?

Yeah, it's a gamble either way, some pay off some don't.

Trading a prospect for Doyle Alexander seemed like a great idea at the time, who knew he was going to have a HoF career.

from jason beck's blogs, DD quotes:

"Dombrowski gave a little more information on left field now that Torii Hunter takes over in right:

“I don’t really know which way we’ll take that,” he said. “We have our own internal debates if [Andy] Dirks is an everyday player. He hit right-handed pitching very well last year, which is the majority of pitching you face. However, we’re also in a spot with the young guys, [Nick] Castellanos and [Avisail] Garcia, you don’t want them to come in here and play 40 games versus left-handed pitching.

“So, as we’ve told both of those guys how we would approach something like that, ‘Hey, it’s up to you. If you win the job in spring training, go win it, but you’re going to have to get a lot of playing time. So where does that leave us if they don’t? Well, we’ll just wait to see what happens as time goes on there, see if we add somebody.”

If you believe that leaves the door open for another move, you’d be right. And it’s not exactly just cracked open.

“My instinct,” Dombrowski continued, “is that we would add somebody that could hit from the right-hand side that, if those guys don’t make it, could go out there and play with Dirks. But we’ll wait and see.”

id say chances are low we sign someone like victorino or pagan, but high that we sign hairston or ross. DD seems to be thinking platoon as well.

What's next: Go get Troy Tulo. From the Rockies. That's my dream trade.

I too would be surprised if they signed Sanchez now.

I wasn't expecting a 15 million dollar a year demand.

They could shoot lower and trade away Porcello to gain 3 million toward said players salary however.

I agree Illitch wants to win now...(based on his AL champ shape I'd say it's pretty crucial) and will spend more than he would've in the past but there will be some limit

Our time is now. We have one of the dominate pitchers in baseball and 2 of the top power hitters in all of baseball.

Now can go a long way. We have control of JV, Miggy, Prince, AJ, Fister and Scherzer for some time. Its not like there is a one-two year limit for a WS win. That's the great thing about this team.

Verlander "is" only signed for two more seasons, at this time, 2013 and 2014. Cabrera for three. So there is some limit so to speak. How much money will it take to resign either one of them? Even a bigger question, how big an issue is it for JV to play on a WS team here or find one somewhere else, should it not happen in the next two seasons.. And is the Tigers defense an issue?, for him as well?

Teams usually will try to sign an Ace pitcher like Verlander 2 years before. Longer they wait and things can change, price goes up, etc.
So it is a shorter term than you would think with JV, Cabrera,
Also have to take into account players due arbitration, and the spike in payroll with that, no matter some came off with delmon.

Whether we want to think it or not, the Tigers are kind of like the yankees and other big spending teams, going after high profile FA, that just a few short years ago weren't, due to no one wanted to come here, and the team didn't go that route.

Pudge, Maggs, etc. started it. Mr. I has gone 'all in'. and so have many of us in how we think about the team and players. They should have Sanchez on their radar, he is a safer less costly pitcher than greinke who still carries some different issues/baggage, in a less demonstrative way than weaver but still shows on the field.

About two weeks ago I was saying a 10 man trade again with the marlins for Giancarlo, but now Torii.

Tulo;
2012 Contract Status: Signed thru 2020, 7 yrs/$45M (08-14), 6 yrs/$118M (15-20) & 21 team option (details)[*]

They aren't going anyway.

They aren't going anyway.

It's going to take a buck or two to resign them!

$126,084,500. mill on the books as of now with arbi's on the way. And in need of a closer, backup catcher,a 5th starter?. Unless you go with the core group. Adding 5 mil to JV and MC contracts seams within reach, like no problem. 140+ mill and here we go, like where the room to fix things at the trade deadline! At some point the money becomes the problem.

I get it but not signing these 2 would be dumb. Both potential hall of famers. And unless they implement a cap, money becoming an issue is just a guess.

How awesome would that be? Doesn't Tulo have a ridiculously long contract? Something like through 2021 or some nonsense, IIRC.

Not sure but it would be sweet as hell. Always been a fan, as far as using his swing when playing MLB the Show.
