Who should be the #1 target?

The problem with spending more than the franchise can support is adventually they have to balance it out. If they over spend for 4 years there will be a time that they "under spend". For the long term health of the franchise (which is better for fans) it is better to try and make wise decisions to keep a competitive team on the field for the LONG TERM without spending more than the team makes.
yeah but if we make a couple BIG splashes they we become world series favorites causing season tickets to sell out and if we do win the series next year all of a sudden there will be tons of tigers fans because we won like last year with the giants

Those are short term spikes. The Giants will be back down to earth soon enough. The city of Detroit can not sustain a baseball team with a $140-160M payroll. For the long term success of this franchise it is my guess that the payroll should be somewhere around $100-$110M.

Mitch[/color]]I'll be honest, I don't really care how much Mike I spends. If he wants a 140m payroll, who am I to argue. Not my cash.

Well if they want to become the Florida Marlins, win now trade after scenario, I'm all for it.

Best bet this offseason would be to do either 1 of 2 things.

1. Try to pry Jimmy Rollins away from Philly (Which could happen for 1/2 the Reyes money). This would give us the leadoff hitter we desire and knock out 2 birds with 1 stone in that we could then move Peralta to either 2B or 3B shoring up one of our other concerns.

or

2. You make the trade with Cincy for Brandon Phillips. The good news about making this deal is that it was basically already made last season when Atlanta traded for Dan Uggla so you make sure to use that deal as a stone setter at least. One thing though is the trade would be dependent on him signing an extension and since were on the Uggla standard for trade it would only make sense to be in the ballpark of what he was signed to which would probably be 4 year 48 million extension to his already 12 million contract for next season putting the total to 5 year 60 million.

Either of those moves still allows us to make other significant moves to help this team overall and still address's a huge need.

1. We already have a SS.

2. Rollins is far from the leadoff hitter we want. By that, I mean he sucks, and wouldn't be much of an improvement over Jackson at leadoff. .296, .320, .338, those are his OBP the last three years.

Unfortunately, this FA class isn't very strong, it will be interesting to see what they do.

Over spending for a BB team will affect them down the road at some point. Look at the Mets.

I'm a bit surprised at the ARam love in this poll. How come he's not getting more talk if so many want him here?

rumors are out there that the mets are looking to trade david wright. if the price is right should we trade for him? you can't really go by his power stats because citi field but if we could send porcello, oliver, and that hard throwing reliever who's name escapes me would you take it?

Detroit is not a home run park for right handed hitters either. Wright would face the same issues in Detroit.

However, third base sucks right now, so Wright will draw a lot more than Porcello plus scraps. Mets would definitely require Turner and would get a similar player in offers from many teams, I would expect.

you would think so but mets ownership wants more money to pay for jose reyes, need a young starter, and mets don't think of wright nearly as high as they used to.

Wright worries me with those back problems. That said, I'd still trade Porcello and Oliver for him. I don't see either of those guys as more than back of the rotation pitchers, so if you can get a good starting infielder for them, especially a fairly young one like Wright, you gotta do that deal.

I honestly wish the Tigers would have gone after Adrian Beltre in the offseason.. He would have helped bigtime..

Same here. I HATED the decision to bring Inge back yet again.

Another guy I'd like to see us pursue is Joel Peralta. He'd make a great 6th/7th inning guy, and if Zoom could come back and stay healthy (HUGE IF), we'd have a shutdown bullpen to follow a solid rotation.

In no way would a trade be worth it for Wright considering if traded he can void his 16 million option for 2013. He is making 15 million in 2012 so we would more then likely have to include an extension in any trade for him which could get very costly if your factoring in giving up Porcello/Oliver or Turner for someone your going to as well end up paying 6 years in the neighborhood of 85-90 million especially given the huge injury concerns with him right now with his back.

Also I don't see us signing any major FA for 3rd considering our #1 position player prospect currently plays 3rd and is only a couple years away from the majors. I believe the only way we don't see a rotation at 3rd next season that involves Inge/Left handed bat is if we move Peralta to 3rd.
