Penn St facing unprecedented penalties

Yeah I think a victim(s)? has emerged from the 70's, byco, but I don't think there's any evidence that PSU or JoePa knew about Sandusky's shenanigans that far back. He's been molesting for quite some time, but PSU has not been aware of it that long.

the wikipedia article on the scandal mentioned that there was evidence Sandusky had been doing what he did for decades. I don't think you become a monster like that overnight...

Didn't the number 1 HS QB still saying he was coming to Penn State? Knowing you can't play in a bowl game, knowing you can't win a title etc, why would any decent athlete want to play at Penn State?

Absolutely, champ, I think that's something that's kind of ingrained in you early on. Apparently that was one of the arguments the defense tried though, that you don't become pedophile when you're an old man, well the fact that it came forward there was pedophilia going in the 70's kind of blew that argument up.

yeah, I always thought trying to weight the divisions like they did was stupid & they should've just gone with a geographic division. Figured it would take some time though; didn't expect the divisions to blow up in the league's face like that, one year later, with ohio, and penn st going down one after the other with post-season bans.

my wisconsin coworker is happy.

Makes sense, Wisconsin could pretty much sleep walk through the season and play in their second B1G championship game in a row.

It will be interesting to see how many players transfer. Can Penn State even field a team this season? I guess even if it was a huge number of player transferring, they could convince people to walk-on.

not sure. I'm guessing the percentage that loved PennSt/JoePa and always wanted to play for the school is WAY lower these days, but that's not to say it's non-existent.

I was thinking they would still bring in some decent athletes; they still do get to play for a Big Ten school and get the visibility of that.

USC's recruiting didn't drop off too much; granted... that wasn't as bad of a scandal. Actually, I think USC was punished way too harshly, considering the slap on the wrist ohio got away with. but I digress.

Not sure where you're seeing that. This was from yesterday...

Hackenberg waiting for more information

Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy quarterback Christian Hackenberg plans to call Penn State coach Bill O'Brien later Sunday.

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. - Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy quarterback Christian Hackenberg indicated he will stand by his commitment to Penn State, short of the NCAA handing down an unprecedented postseason ban that would prevent him from playing in a bowl game during his college career.

"As long as it's not a four to five year bowl ban," Hackenberg said Sunday after participating in the final day of the Elite 11 quarterback camp. "As long as I can play in a bowl while I'm up there, I should be at Penn State."

....

So I guess he's gone.

This is worse than the death penalty. PSU will have to endure a few years of being a laughingstock competitively before even thinking about being able to rebuild.

I read it somewhere on the internet saying he's still committed. I read it 3-4 days ago.

I love watching the student reaction. Why the hell are they so surprised? Did they think they were getting a slap on the wrist?

After, they (they being the global power ESPN) interviewed two students. Both of them said, "How can they punish the program, this has nothing to do with the football team."

It cracks me up when people use that defense. The cover up was for a sicko IN THE PROGRAM. WITH THE FOOTBALL TEAM.

Oh. Maybe you aren't privy to all the new shit, but uhh, some information was released today that might make a quote from 3-4 days ago not quite applicable right now.

And I believe I read in testimony that the coverup was to "preserve the image of the program". How people can still be defending this is crazy. This monster was protected be the beloved program.

take it easy. he's still waiting for the Western Union Telegram from the NCAA to arrive by the afternoon stagecoach.

Hardcore Penn State fans are either in denial or just stupid. My favorite one that I've heard plenty today is, "But, Sandusky abusing boys didn't give them a competitive advantage on the field." (when talking about vacated wins)

It's like..no it didn't. Did it? You're so smart, how did you figure that out on your own?

I don't usually go hunting for NCAA news. If I come across some, it's usually by accident.

Vacating wins was directly punishing Paterno's legacy. It shouldn't be that hard for them to understand. I'm sure that was done to serve as warning for future coaches that might be in similar positions.

It's amusing when people "spin" themselves right out of understanding the world around them.

ohio fans were saying the same thing about the tattoo scandal... "it's not like the guys who got tattoos could run faster because of them. we gained no competitive advantage from this. why are we in trouble???"

Proper response: smile, pat them on the head, and walk away.

I think removing wins is the least important part of the punishment. For me, that never really seems to mean anything. They still technically won the games, but now they didn't? Did the Fab 5 go to two title games? In my mind, they did. I watched them play. But, the records say they didn't. That part is kind of arbitrary, I think the rest of it is what counts.

It's like watching a train wreck... I can't take my eyes off this. I wonder how many players will bolt??

I understand. This latest report would have taken quite a bit of digging to find. It is a good practice to discuss things you're completely oblivous to, and don't care about. It ensures your well thought out theories and ideas come across very well.

Its more of a bonus for us non PSU fans. Lol.
