2016 Draft- Who ya got?

Stafford produced in 2013. His weapons weren't good in 2013 (Durham, Pettigrew, old Burleson) and it led to picks not his fault. Still had 29 TDs though and good 3rd down % and good yardage. Lots of drops that year.

Lions were 22nd in YPC in 2013 (4 YPC was below average). Good protection though.

I'd say 14 of the 20 turnovers Detroit had this year are not Stafford's fault.

Stafford has not been protected properly the last two years. And he's not that mobile.

In 2013, when the team needed him the most, at home against Baltimore and the Giants, he absolutely puked the bed.

There's no weaseling out of that. He was pathetic, and his stats show us that. And the tape.

I'd put one pick on him against Baltimore. And the 3rd pick should never have been needed if Tucker didn't make a miracle FG. Stafford led a great 4th Quarter drive.

Giants game the first pick was not his fault. There was also a fumble in that first half. They scored a good amount in the second half. Fauria could have had that ball on the second pick.

He did, I agree. Last year he was beginning to right the ship though, less bone headed plays, a playoff berth, very close to a playoff WIN. This year it's a team problem, with a bunch of talent gone/injured. Like I said, I'm holding out on crucifying Stafford because the team in general is so piss poor. He's earned another year, hopefully under a new coaching staff, gm, and coming into the year with a some added talent on both sides of the ball.

I have a few thoughts on Stafford. I don't think he's elite or that he is going to be. I also don't think he's as bad as he's appeared to be this season. The OL is so bad that it has negated the running game and put Stafford under constant pressure. Shore up the OL, and he probably gets back to being the guy he was in his better seasons here.

I don't see any great QBs in this draft. Certainly no Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning no brainer #1 draft pick types. So, I'd be alright with trying to fix the OL and giving Stafford yet another shot to remain "the guy". I'm also not convinced that we couldn't snag a veteran QB as a free agent or via a trade that wouldn't be a decently long-term solution. I'm not talking a end of the line Brett Favre or something like that either. A younger guy who is stuck behind a legend or someone who just needs a change of scenery or is on a team that is going to start a complete rebuild. They are out there and might be better options than what we have or could draft while we continue to fix the rest of the team with young talent at deeper draft positions.

That's just the thing. They've been trying to fix the o-line in recent drafts. It hasn't worked. Whether that's on scouting, coaching, or the players just suck, who knows.

Laken and Warford are fine. Reiff was fine until this year.

Swanson sucks but is inexperienced. Waddle is terrible following his injury.

And they don't fit the scheme. Stud LT should fix it if Reiff can get back on track. And get a new center.

Defensively, don't turn it over 20 times on offense in 8 games should help the defense. But a second stud pass rusher is needed.

We already did that though didn't we? From Shorts to Caldwell? Bad OL play is too easy of an excuse. If he had a bad OL throughout explain 2011? The truth is he'll be here for awhile, with the money being owed.. Unless they pull a San Francisco.

Inconsistent QB's never make it in the NFL.

This is kind of my mindset as well...I dont think Stafford is going to be the player we all hoped he would become. But, I dont think he is THIS bad either. I wont predict what his 'future' numbers will be, but I am willing to give him one more year.

Stafford was the most protected he he has ever been in 2011. Plus had healthy weapons (pre Titus insanity too).

He was pressured 15% less of the time in 2011 compared to 2015. That is a HUGE in the NFL.

2011 he also had 4.3 YPC support. Best, Morris and Kevin Smith did decent. 2014 is 3.7 YPC support behind poor run blocking.

2011 protection and run support. 41 TDs
2014 and 2015, no protection and run support, you get problems.

14 of the 20 turnover are not Stafford's fault this year.

The problem is because he's getting so much money "he's not as good as we all hoped" doesn't really cut it. Last year we won 11 games in spite of Matt. He might have cut down on those INT but last year was not a good one. Not sure what you guys are seeing..

2011
Stafford was only pressured 24.2 % of drop backs (3rd best), had 4.32 YPC in run support (taking out QB runs), and received a very strong 34 turnovers from a good Detroit defense (first 10 games). His weapons had a 6.7% drop rate. None of Stafford’s offensive line or top four receiving weapons got hurt (WR 1-3 and TE). Best missed 10 games at running back. The result was Stafford had 5,000 yards and 41 TDs and a 10-6 season.
2012

Stafford was pressured only 27.1 % as only Jeff Backus missed one game on the offensive line. His number 2 WR (Burleson) missed 9 games and number 3 WR missed 6 games and top TE missed the final four games. The drop rate was a decent 6.7% and Stafford had 4.19 YPC in run support. The Lions defense only forced 17 turnovers so there were not many short fields. Detroit’s defense had plenty of injuries and couldn’t hold 4th Quarter leads for a 4-12 record. Stafford had 4,900 yards but struggled with completion %, 20 TDs and 17 interceptins.
2013
Stafford had 28.9 % pressure on his drop backs but his weapons at a terrible 9.1% drop rate. Stafford’s run support was strong at 4.22 YPC but he had 19 interceptions with only 12 of them his fault. Calvin missed two division games and was limited against the Browns and Giants. Burleson missed 7 games and LaAdrian Waddle missed 8 games and Pettigrew missed 2 games. Reggie Bush missed 1.5 games at Arizona and at Philadelphia in a blizzard. The Lions defense forced 22 turnovers. Stafford had 29 TDs (6th in league) and 4,600 yards but a terrible league worst drop rate hurt his completion %.
2014
Stafford was pressured 31.9% as the offensive line had major injuries. Waddle missed 7 games, Warford 4.5 games, Reiff 2 games and backup RT Hilliard 15 games. These injuries plus a first year offense caused more pressure than usual for Stafford. The run game was atrocious with 3.76 YPC support with Bush hurt 6 games and Bell missing a game. The drop rate was 6% and 27 turnovers were forced by the Lions defense. Calvin missed 3 games and was limited 2 games, Ebron missed 3 games and Bush missed 6 games of action. The Lions kickers missed 13 field goals to add insult to injury. Stafford persevered in 2014 with the addition of Golden Tate and the emergence of Theo Riddick in the passing game to replace Bush. The Lions strong PPG defense and Stafford connection to Calvin for 11 games and Tate for 16 games led the Lions to a good 11-5 record.

2015
Stafford is pressured 39% of drop backs. Most hit QB and 4th most sacked QB. 3.5 YPC in run support from RBs/WRs. Includes the 30 yard fake punt too.

This is the worst Stafford has ever had it in Detroit.

2011 good support
2014/2015 bad support
2012/2013 meh support and weapon injuries.

Draft a LT and get the pressure % at least back to 28%. And get to 4 YPC at least.

Matt played well in 2014. It wasn't in spite of Matt. It was in spite of the new offense, bad blocking and poor run game.

Those %, especially 2011-2013 aren't a lot. Check out other QB's, check out some of the good ones, like Aaron Rodgers. He gets more pressure than that.

This doesn't concern Matt but I saw a PFF breakdown of 2010.. 22 QB's were pressured over 30%. Those are starters. 30 above 28%.

Rodgers has been pressured less than Stafford every year since 2011. 2014 a good amount.

2014 and 2015 pressure was the issue along with run game. 2012 and 2013 was injured weapons and drops. 2011 no issue other than his finger injury for 3 games ( 9 ints).

No pressure plus no run game is the worst combo you can get for a QB.
