2018 Offseason

My mistake, he won rookie of year, not defenseman of the year.

Yea Russo was great at the AHL level. Hopefully Arizona has some glorious opportunity for him and he can prove Kenny wrong.

It would make me feel better if we won this deal..

Feel like he never really got a fair shot here...

No, but I expect whoever is in charge down there thought he didn't deserve one. As far as the trade, I expect part of it was they didn't think he get it now with whatever roster spots available he would have been an odd man out.. And he's 25. These are obvious points, nonetheless..

Think during his 20 games stint with the Wings, he played a far more conservative style. Trying to avoid mistakes instead of playing the way he does in the AHL.

Hopefully he can make the Arizona roster and show what he can do.

I would rather have used that money somewhere else. Maybe we can just trade him this time.

I wouldn't mind bringing back Vanek but they need to start getting free agents under 30.

Due to RFA rules hard to find a UFA under 28.

Vanek will be tradebait.
Green will likely have a NTC again.
Bernier will be backup cause Coreau pretty much bottomed out.

Summary from what I can recall.

Day 1 of free agency

Green: 2 years at 5.375 per
Vanek: 1 year at 3

Bernier: 3 years at 3 per
Satari: (assume near minimum)

Previously:
Bertuzzi/Frk extended for 2/1 years respectively.

Key RFAs:
Mantha
Larkin
Athanasiou

AHL Signings:
Jake Chelios
Chris Terry
Wade Megan
And I guess Sateri can be put in here as well, but given Howard's more fragile condition past few seasons he should get a crack on the main

Yakupov to SKA St. Petersburg of KHL.

Pretty much the replacement for Kovalchuk. We'll see how he does on a super stacked team.

Sheesh, what a rough pick for Edmonton. I remember his draft year wasn't really considered all that hot with top talent (no Crosby/Ovechkin types), but that he was widely considered well separated from the players behind. I guess it ended up all right with him being bad enough for Edmonton to win the lottery in a better year (McDavid), but what a waste.

It is more of Edmonton not knowing how to develop players or build a team/system that works to players' strengths.

Take Taylor Hall for example. He was supposed to be a superstar. Didn't happen in Edmonton. Oh wait, didn't he win the Hart trophy since being traded to NJ?

That was a pretty bad trade for Edmonton.

Hall, Nugent-Hopkins, and Yakupov were all taken first overall.

The team needs to take a big share of the blame for their development. I mean Hopkins never even broke 60 points yet.

I don't think Edmonton even made the playoffs this year with McJesus.

Yeah, they've definitely gotten the least out of their talent. McDavid is too good to screw himself up, but the Oilers still can't build a team after 10(!) years in the lottery and now 4 (seriously) first overall picks. It takes a special kind of stupid to not even luck into a few good picks with that kind of run.

Surprised Calvin De Haan is still available.

So from about 2013-14-2015-16: Tavares, Okposo, Nielsen were the 3 most played forwards on NYI. They've been in their top since together since about 2011-12.

All 3 left via free agency.
Okposo/Nielsen - 2016
Tavares 2018

Their 4 best forwards at this point are;
Barzal (on ELC)
Josh Bailey - locked up for 5 years at 5 mil per, which is a steal if he can continue production without JT
Ander Lee - UFA 2019
Eberle - UFA 2019

Brock Nelson is good for 40 points a year, he is currently an RFA as well.

I don't think the Islanders are anyone's first choice to play.

Hell, even Vanek refused to sign with them in 2013-14 when they coughed up a 1st, 2nd, and Matt Moulsen (who was near point per game that season and before with Islanders).

Before that Nabakov, after being dumped by his KHL team, signed with Detroit and had to clear re-entry waivers. NYI picked him up and he refused to play. He eventually played the next season after they suspended his contract.

That entire franchise has been a shambles for decades. We can all thank Mike Milbury for starting the crazy train.
