2020 - 2021 Free Agents and Offseason Moves

The Tigers have shown interest in free-agent utilityman Marwin Gonzalez. Signing with Detroit would reunite Gonzalez with new manager A.J. Hinch, who was the Astros? skipper during part of Gonzalez?s time in Houston. Gonzalez had his best year in 2017 under Hinch, which was also a World Series-winning campaign for the Astros. The success Gonzalez had as an Astro led the Twins to sign him to a two-year, $21MM contract going into 2019, but the club didn?t get great value from that investment. The switch-hitting 31-year-old batted an underwhelming .248/.311/.387 in 662 plate appearances with Minnesota, though he did continue to provide defensive versatility. He saw at least some action at first, second, third, short and both outfield positions as a Twin.

Along with Gonzalez, the Tigers are interested in first baseman Mitch Moreland. Moreland has been on the market since the Padres declined his $3MM option at the start of the offseason. The 35-year-old divided last season between San Diego and Boston, with which he combined for a strong .265/.342/.551 line and 10 home runs in 152 plate appearances. Moreland?s production did plummet as the year progressed, though.

The off-season is a time when hires are made and potential rosters start to take shape. It?s a season of hope and often what happens behind the scenes is just as important as the changes we?ll be seeing on the field.
Today, Kurt and Holly address the additions the Tigers have made so far to the roster. Through Wednesday, they have signed 2 free agents in RHP Jose Urena and OF Robbie Grossman. An additional handful of veterans have also been signed to minor league deals.
We?ve got 5 questions. Our 2 bloggers have just 2 sentences each to state their opinions. As always, their answers aren?t shared until publication. Let?s see what they have to say?.

1. Grade the Tigers moves so far.

2. What do the signings tell you so far?

3. Do you think the Tigers will be signing more players before Spring Training?

4. Did you expect the Tigers to make the moves they did or did you expect more or less from them?

5. Are these moves in line with where they are in the rebuild?

I really don't blame the Tigers one bit for being cheap. They are nowhere near contention and they don't need to worry about putting butts in the seats since that isn't allowed. Why waste $30M for 10 more wins?

THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH.
Totally Tigers

What a tough time to be a Tiger fan.

It?s Year 6 or 7 of a rebuild, depending on your math. We are a week away from closing down January with 20 Thoughts. But I would like to scratch an itch that has been driving me a little crazy.
It?s the state of the rebuild. Assuming it has started.
Is there anything we can hang our hat on for the upcoming season?
The answer is yes. And for our sanity, it would be therapeutic to discuss it.
