I find that logic unsound.

We lost Ajax for every game this year that is left, we got Price for 1/5 of what is left, and he replaces Smyly who was not exactly terrible anyways.

Come playoff 4 man rotation time Price makes us better, but until then, I think we are going to feel the loss of Ajax a bit.

You make it sound like we're trying to replace Mike Trout. Truth is, we're replacing a CF'er that carried a .730 OPS.

I still like the trade regardless. Getting Price helps extend the window a bit imo, since he'll replace max next year. It just means we absolutely, 100% have to get AT LEAST ONE impact OF bat who can play decent defense and a back-end starter if Ray cant make the jump this coming offseason, and one or more of our middle infielders will be gone to take care of it. My money is on Kinsler, tbh. He's building his value with this season and I bet DD will want to sell high to get some cheaper players and let some other cheaper ones take over in the middle next year. Plus, I wouldnt put it past him to try to sign Price beyond 2015 because Boras isnt his agent.

We'll probably miss some of AJax's offense the rest of the year, and probably Smyly in the bullpen come October, but I think this puts us in a better position for the future without really hurting us too much in the now.



Oh, the bullpen will also still need overhauling, but that kinda goes without saying.

Not just offensively but from what I've been reading here for awhile now were talking about a CFer that is regressing defensively.

Before the hot month Jackson was a .650 OPS player with average defense with no trade value, now he's all of a sudden a major loss to the team.

This year AJ is .984 FP in center field 251 chances 245 putouts in 99 games and a 2.58 Range factor 2 assists and 4 errors...

Exactly. Never fails. Detroit fans are NEVER happy....EVER. All Star, Super Star pitcher who is a difference maker for a scrub like Smyly who belongs in the pen for one. He should never be a starter. Austin Jackson was a good OF....i'll give him that, but he was a liability at the plate, especially come playoff time. And the prospect they gave up, the 18 yr old SS. When was he going to play anyways? Not any time soon over Suarez or Iglesias. Phenomenal rotation now.....DD had to match what Oakland was doing. Great trade...

I'm floored that this is all the Rays got for David Price -- as are some of the execs I've talked to so far -- and I can't imagine that the return this winter would have been any worse. The three-way trade that sends Price to Detroit, Nick Franklin, Drew Smyly and Tigers prospect Willy Adames to Tampa, and Austin Jackson to Seattle, nets out as an outstanding move for the Tigers and a solid exchange for the Mariners. But for Tampa Bay, it may end up as a huge missed opportunity to restock their system.

The Tigers didn't need another starter, but Price is certainly better than Smyly -- who's been very good this year -- both looking at the regular season and in lining up the postseason rotation. Price can work deeper into games than Smyly and is less likely to run into fatigue in late September from a full-season workload, taking pressure off a bullpen that has been Detroit's only real weakness this year. And he gives them yet another playoff-worthy starter who lines up well against any other team's No. 1 starter. The team's a little worse off in the lineup without Jackson, but that's a small matter to offset compared to the gain of Price from now through the end of next year, after which they can re-sign him or take a draft pick.

The move makes Justin Verlander the Tigers' fifth-best starter right now, although they're not likely to use him as such; I'd have more confidence in Rick Porcello as the fourth starter in the playoff rotation right now than Verlander, given his struggles.

Rays fans who at least could console themselves with hopes of a Wil Myers/Jake Odorizzi level of return in an eventual Price deal had to be disappointed to see the total return today. Smyly, one of my preseason breakout picks for 2014, has shown a much-improved curveball as a starter this year to go with his cutter, giving him two above-average major league pitches along with above-average control, and he profiles as a solid midrotation starter, 3 WAR or so a year, very valuable while he's cheap, but not someone to anchor your rotation.

Nick Franklin has been terrible in limited major league time over the past 15 months, but I still project him as at least an average regular at second base, as the Rays are likely to consider his defense insufficient for shortstop. He's a switch-hitter but needs to stop trying to hit right-handed; he has an unorthodox left-handed swing that has produced power but not high averages. Franklin is still just 23 and ready to play against right-handed pitchers. If the Rays solve his issues against lefties, he could be an above-average everyday player, but that's a significant hurdle to overcome. They also added 18-year-old low-A shortstop Willy Adames, who likely moves to shortstop and has some upside with the bat, more in the hit tool than power. He's a lottery ticket in the scope of the deal.

The Mariners had no room for Franklin, their second first-round pick in 2009, and seemed to have lost faith in his ability to play short or second every day for them, so flipping him for an every day centerfielder makes sense from a perspective of need, although it's not a great use of value. Jackson is a free agent after next year, and outside of the phenomenal 2012 season -- powered by career highs in BABIP and walk rate, without any sustainable reasons -- has been about a three-win player, and his defense is heading in the wrong direction as he gets older and slows down. If Franklin becomes just an average regular, he'll be a much better value than Jackson considering service time and salary, but Jackson's a surer bet and fits a current need for the M's.

Maybe but if starting in previous playoffs is any indicator..Price has not been good.

I think you're over simplifying it. Just because I or anyone else think Ajax is average and Price is good doesnt mean we're not suppose to discuss the merits of the trade.

And no one said he's a huge loss..

Well first off, I have never said it wasn't a great deal. Just that we paid a heavy price, and didn't really address our biggest concern, which has been a power LH bat.

The fact that I think Ajax is going to be tough to replace in production terms does not mean I didn't approve of trading him. I think some of you read more than what is on the screen. Also for those couple of you who brought up his OPS...forget those averages and look at the counting stats, because that's what we will miss.

In the end we made 2 moves, but neither was the move I think we really needed. Price (and Soria lol) is going to help, but were not going to win a WS because we got a pitcher, no matter how good he is. The bonus is he's ours for 2015 as well, and we might be able to repackage him for a nice haul as well.

I feel like the Tigers just got the equivalent of Peyton Manning in exchange for Brandon Pettigrew and Joique Bell. I think we're all a bit too spoiled by how deep our pitching has been in previous seasons to appreciate how good Price is and what he brings to Detroit.

DD signed Nathan and traded for Soria. Can't just keep throwing shit at the RP wall until something sticks. I also think Soria will get back on track, he's been to good this season to all of the sudden be Phil Coke.
