53 man roster

Detroit Lions keeping Brandon Powell. Is it a sign of the future?

The Lions made 21 roster moves in all Saturday to get down to the 53-player limit. Here are a few other thoughts on everything that went down:

The Lions kept just seven defensive linemen on their initial 53-man roster, which falls in line with what the New England Patriots did with Matt Patricia as their defensive coordinator the last two seasons. This is a defense that will play just three linemen a majority of the time, so the days of 10 and 11 defensive linemen on the roster are over.

One name to watch that hit the scrap heap Saturday: Vincent Valentine, a third-round pick by the Patriots in 2016 who missed all of last season with injury but knows Patricia's system.

I'll throw one other trade possibility out there with, who else, the Patriots, because general manager Bob Quinn loves trading with his old team. The Lions do have a surplus of receivers on the roster, while the Boston Sports Journal suggested previously that the Patriots could deal defensive tackle Malcom Brown.

A couple of thoughts on the Lions initial 53-man roster as I look at it for a minute:
Carrying six receivers and 10 offensive linemen is an interesting decision, but not sure if it sticks. Have to think Detroit is going to be looking at the waiver wire, particularly on the defensive line and at linebacker. Considering Detroit kept only seven defensive linemen, there's a chance any roster claim could result in a different position group losing someone on the team now. -

The Lions did reward players with good camps. Brandon Powell, Bradley Marquez, Hakeem Valles, Leo Koloamatangi, Trevor Bates and Charles Washington all played their way onto the roster at various points during camp. Almost all, other than Kolomatangi, Powell and maybe Valles, seemed to do it almost exclusively through special teams. Valles, of this group, has the best chance to make an immediate impact. He often looked like Detroit's best tight end during camp -- or at worst second-best behind Luke Willson.

Other than DeShawn Shead, none of the moves the Lions made were overly surprising. There were a lot of either/or potential decisions, but Shead was the only one who seemed like he might be locked into a spot at the start of camp who ended up without one Saturday.

Add cornerback Mike Ford to the list of players the Lions are bringing back for the practice squad.

Former Patriots DE Eric Lee is signing with the Lions’ practice squad.
3.5 sacks last year in 6 games (5 starts).
Matt Patricia obviously knows him well.

Rudocks best value is his contributions in the QB film room, nice to have him back for that capacity.

Some get Brian Robinson's agent on the phone. Yes, he's aging, but clearly our pass rush could benefit from a guy like him.

Robison or kendricks out there to help the front 7. David amerson is way better than shitty Lawson. Quinn sucks ass at his job. Just keeps signing new England scraps.

In addition to these moves, the Lions announced one more addition to their practice squad: defensive tackle John Atkins, formerly with the Patriots.
