ALDS Game #5 Detroit @ Cleveland, Saturday October 12th, 2024

Days of Roar: A Free Press Sports Detroit Tigers. 70 minutes.
With Evan still away on his honeymoon, Mark once again enlists the help of Tigers radio analyst and friend of the pod Bobby Scales to co-host the show. Mark and Bobby break down the nearly unprecedented season for the 2024 Tigers and begin looking at how the team’s playoff run could impact the 2025 season. With greater expectations now formed for the young ball club, how might Scott Harris and A.J. Hinch bolster this seemingly new era of Tigers baseball? The guys attempt to parse the tea leaves for answers from the Tigers’ season ending press conference. After Bobby exits the show, we find that you can take the baseball beat writer out of Detroit but you can’t take the baseball beat out of the writer as Evan joins AGAIN while still on his honeymoon with additional analysis from the press conference.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

We’re going to keep the good vibes going from the playoffs just a little bit longer. Afterall, it’s been a full decade since we’ve had the chance to discuss October baseball. We shouldn’t have to move on just days after the season ended for the Tigers.
These 2 playoff series were filled with a variety of great moments. Every game exciting except for that first one with the Guardians.
So what if we had to pick our 5 favorite moments? Could we even be able to par it down to 5?
Well, we have to. This is Friday, after all and you know what that means……

GRADING THE TIGERS: CATCHERS.
Totally Tigers

Now that the season – and the playoffs – are over, this is the perfect time to reflect upon the 2024 year and grade players, management and Front Office. We’re going to divide the roster down by position in order to foster careful reflection and comments. Every day you’ll be asked to evaluate a small group of Tigers.
In most of the forthcoming blogs, there will be multiple opportunities to vote so please cast a vote for every poll you see on this page.
You will not be asked to grade players who have been traded or those with a very small sample size. We are also not offering a letter grade of E for the reason that anyone playing that poorly would have been released or sent down to the minors.
As you consider each player, we ask that you look at their entire skill set, not just hitting. Consider defense, speed, the ability to call a game and clutch ability.
Consider that the slash line is a more valuable indicator instead of just batting average and that a player’s role and position in the lineup are also factors. That defensive range and defensive runs saved (DRS) are a better gauge than fielding percentage. And that ERA and WHIP tell more about a pitcher than wins and losses.

Today, we’re starting off with catchers. There are 2 polls here to complete. Afterwards, you may leave your rationale in the comment section. Three sentences only please.

Jung: C, although he really didn't play enough to get graded (only 34 games)
Keith: C. He got better at the plate as the year progressed, but wasn't good defensively
Tork: D. Surprisingly, he was better defensively than Keith but was below average at the plate. He still had a plus WAR but I really don't believe it.

I was looking for the F grade for Baez and Kreidler but the worst option available was D, so that's what they got. She seems to be grading on the public school grading scale, where nobody fails!
I think that Sweeny is like Jung from yesterday...not enough games, so would be an incomplete. I gave him a C overall. He gets a B for his defense and a D for his offense.

Compared to the guy he was taking over for Sweeney's offense is like an A++.

I wonder why she didn't include Carpenter?

2024 Season Review: Kerry Carpenter looks like one of the best hitters in baseball
The question is whether he can stay healthy and sustain this for a full season.
BYBTB
I'm of the opinion that until he a) stays healthy, and b) hits left handed pitchers, he is just a promising player. Elite hitters hit any pitching.

Agreed, Carp played the field more than he dh'd. He DH'd more after he was injured. He's a outfielder going forward.
