Article On Lions Cap Trouble

Article is bull shit. We only have 37 players under contract. 15 million under at least. Calvin long term deal makes room for most. Maybe a Suh restructure, maybe Corey Williams gone at 5 million. Lions are fine.

article is not bullshit...lol , it's 100% right on...renegotiating Calvin is the priorty because as you can read like the Cardinals did with Fitz they went from only 500,00 of cap room to 9 million on that restructure alone....Calvin holds all the cards though.

and if the article was bullshit you wouldn't be posting about restructuring like it does...and it also mentions letting guys go that are already here and are FAs.

truth is the Lions have cap trouble right now....they dont have a ton of cash to throw around in 2012 at FAs.

Lol it's 100% bullshit. Renegotiating Calvin is a priority because he has a 22 million cap number. However there are only 37 people under contract, they are not over. 15 million under with 14 people to sign means they need to get Calvin done so they can fit Avril and Tulloch. Worst case a Suh restrcuture or Corey Williams gone for 5 million which was the plan all along with Fairley.

If the Lions were over, they wouldn't even be negotiating with Tulloch,Avril and Backus which they also are doing.

you cant keep pushing money back...it kills you in the end

we'll see when FA rolls around and how much $$$ they throw around.

the Netrat clown even says in his blog all his numbers are estimates , the Lions dont release numbers.

Avril and Tulloch alone are going to cost you 12+ million next year.

They won't be getting free agents but they can retain Tulloch and Avril. Like I said 15 million under or so but they have 14 people to sign including Avril,Backus,Shaun Hill,Tulloch. So a Calvin deal is first priority. Suh restructure works(adds 3 million to remaining two years) as long as that last year of the deal Suh nevers sees, just like Calvin won't see the last year of his old CBA rookie year.

Worst case Corey Williams repalced by Hill and Fairley. Other people like Raiola 3.4 million I wouldn't mind drafting a center and giving him the boot, probably won't happen though and then you got Hanson and his 3 million. Hanson has done alot but it might be time to go cheaper. The tenders for Levy,Sammie Lee Hill will be around 1.2 million. 4.5-5 million for the draft(which is 7 roster spots). Calvin long term deal needs to get done but the Lions are not over where they would need to cut a bunch of players to retain Tulloch and Avril.

you cant just cut Raiola...you take the cap hit on it

Corey Williams you dont take the hit on because you traded for him.

you can't go around talking about cutting guys who are UNDER contract because you take the hit on them.

if it were that easy KVB would be toast.

It's not logical slick that with only 37 people under contract that the Lions are somehow over even with Stafford, Suhs and Calvins deal. Even with estimates, it's pretty accurate compared to looking at other contracts (sporttrac). How do you know the National Football Post is accurate? Never even heard of that.

Lions have work to do, 15 million is not enough with 14 players to sign including Avril and Tulloch. Calvin deal must get done first and foremost and then go from there and make decisions on restructures and any cuts like Corey Williams.

KVB would save about 2.9 million if cut, there is some signing bonus over the next 2 years but his salary is still higher.

Raiola is more salary than signing bonus. There is very little cap hit

lol , what are you talking about....he still has almost 2.5 million of his guaratees still to be paid.

signed for 9 million in guarantees...4 million in year 1 , 2.4 last year do the math...they still OWE him a little over 2.5 in his guarantees.

he is here in 2012.

4 in year 1 which was 2009, 2.5 in 2010 last, 2.5 in 2011. This year is 2012, he has very little guranteed left.

I think we are just fine. CJ will want a long-term deal, sure he could make more by using the franchise tag. But, no player wants to live on 1 year deals like that when injuries are so significant. Resigning him gives us 7-9 million in space + releasing Williams (5 million). Those two will allow us to resign Cliff and Tulloch.

NFL teams can always get around the cap, happens every year. And Slick, yes pushing money back can hurt you but not always. Its simple you keep pushing Player A contract bonus' and such to the end of his deal then when it finally comes due you instead give him a new contract, add a couple years to spread that money out. Like say the last year in the players contract comes when he is 33 and starting to decline and even the player knows that getting a multi year contract again is unlikely. You take whatever the amount he is supposed to get say 12 million just in bonus' and add a few more million to that and give him 2 more years. So instead of paying 12 million, you pay something like 5 million in three straight years. However after the first year you cut him because you use the first year to pay the player his guaranteed cash. Meaning the last two years you tacked on, don't mean squat.

he is a 3.4 million dollar hit if cut.

Salary doesn't give you a cap hit. Bonuses + guaranteed money do. His 3.4 million dollar salary is exactly what they save, unless its guaranteed, which I doubt.

Doesn't matter. Raiola is not getting cut. Leader of the O-Line. He's going nowhere.

3.4 savings. It's not guranteed.

come find me when Raiola gets cut...

It was just an option. Calvin long term deal, Corey Williams gone would happen first IMO since the replacements are already on the team compared to Raiola who the replacement wouldn't come until the draft.

Bottomline, Lions are not in cap hell. They have alot of people to sign but have options.
