Avril Has Little Leverage

Right now, they are projected to be about $20 million in cap space, but that doesn't include this year's rookies.

The FAs they might be interested in bringing back:
Cliff Avril
SLH
Lawrence Jackson
Willie Young (RFA)
Durant
Levy
Spievey (RFA)
Berry (RFA)
Delmas
Houston
Smith

If Cliff takes up $10 million, and this year's rookies take up around $5, you're looking at $5 million in space. Even if you cut KVB, Burleson, and Peterman, you're at around $12-$13 million. Then thrown in the cost of the tags for Young, Spievey, and Berry, and you're down to around $10 million.

With that $10 million, you need to fill:
2 DEs (LoJack, KVB)
2 DTs (Williams, SLH)
2 LBs (Durant, Levy)
1 S (Delmas) <- assuming Spievey still has a job as the other starter
1 CB (Houston) <- assuming Berry or a rookie can fill the other spot & nickel
1 G (Peterman)
1 WR (Burleson) <- They'll need a 4th.
You just can't do it.

Wasn't 10m about what they had before this off-season, before they restructured etc?

Give Stafford or Suh an extension. It has to be done. Staffords 20 plus million number and Suhs 18 million number can't happen, especially at the same time.

Actually, they were over the cap before restructuring Stafford, Suh, and Burleson and re-upping Calvin. And they were only able to re-sign Avril, Backus, Hill, and Tulloch with that money.

KVB is signed next year...Burleson is signed next year, Peterman is signed for next year???

If they're all cut you pick up $12.2Mill and have to replaced a DE(hopefully with someone on the team/drafted)

Backus might not be back IF Reiff progresses enough..Another $2.3Mill

Who knows, Raiola could be replaced(not holding breath) another $4Mill off the books

At least one of the LB's(Levy or Durant) will be replaced with this years rookies, maybe both.

I would like SLH & LoJack back. Spievey, Berry & Young can be tendered.

So with your $10 Mill plus another $18.5(above), a 2013 draft...could be ok

No, you don't pick up $12.2 Million. You are not factoring in the dead money you'll get by cutting KVB and Burleson due to the signing bonuses they've received over the past two years. And I factored that into the $10 million, so don't add it. You don't get an extra $18.5. If you cut Raiola you get to about $14 million (this includes Avril's new deal btw). But then you have another starter to replace, so is it really much better?

I took off base salary only... If a $100 Mil was committed for next year, as stated, it included the SB's

Nate Burleson has two years left after this season. If you cut him after this season, the SB cap #s for BOTH years hit immediately. So you only save $3 mil. Peterman saves about $3 mil, KVB about $5 mil (the $1.23 mil from the SB stays). Thats $11 million.

They have around $103 million committed, according to thenetrat.com (pretty detailed, usually pretty accurate). However, that's not including this year's rookies. That'll be another $5. Then, subtract $11 for those cuts, but add about $4 mil for the RFA tags for Spievey, Berry, and Young, and you have about $22 million in space.

So, if Avril gets a deal that costs $12 million, you only have $10 mil left.
Sure, you could backload Avril's deal or restructure some other players' deals to save room, but still, you're replacing a large # of starters. Its not easy.

Avril won't get 12m. And imo, 10-12-13 million free can get it done. It's never easy but very possible.

all the rookies except Reiff will just replace another guy on the current roster's salary, so you will not need $5 Mill extra. 3rd round on are basically league minimum guys.

I'm thinking of a similar deal Miami signed with Cam Wake, but less per year/more guaranteed money. 5yr/$9M/$25M.

No. That $103 million does not include 53 players. It only includes players who are signed THROUGH NEXT YEAR. Its not even 30 players. Less than 30 players make up about $100 million.

So, yes, those rookie contracts WILL count.

according to Net Rat we have over $4 mill in cap space under the 51 player rule for 2012. He doesn't have anything for 2013

Keep an eye on this one...should help shape Avrils market. If wake was the higher end of a potential deal this could be the lower end of what a potential avril deal could look like. At 300 lbs as a DE and 8 sacks im assuming he doesnt get into the double digits per year but should be around 8-9 mil.

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell agreed to a five-contract extension on Thursday. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

More From ESPN.com

Calais Campbell's deal with the Cardinals is refreshing in a time when franchise tags normally cause standoffs, writes Mike Sando. Blog

The 6-foot-8, 300-pound lineman had 51 tackles and 22 assisted tackles last season. He also had eight sacks, two forced fumbles, 11 passes defensed, one fumble recovery, his first interception and blocked three field goals.

The Cardinals had placed the "non-exclusive" franchise tag on the 25-year-old Campbell on March 2.

Drafted in the second round in 2008 out of the University of Miami, he was the Cardinals' 2011 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year for his community work.

nvm....i was wrong. 11 per :/ were effed.

Cardinals agreed to terms with franchise player Calais Campbell on a five-year, $55 million contract.

36 of it over the next 3 yrs.

its the nature of the business now guys. Dlineman, Corners, QB's, Oline and WR's are gonna start to get alllll the money with the other guys fighting for the rest of the cap space.

a lot of you guys thought it was a bigger deal to get Tulloch back than Avril but Cliff's deal is shaping up to be double the Tulloch deal. the times they are a changing!

thinking about this a little more Tulloch is arguably one of the better middle linebackers in the league as to where Eric Wright (as evidence from last year) is at best a low end #2 corner

Tulloch contract = 5 years for 25.5 mill

Eric Wright contract = 5 years for 37.5 mill

getting to the QB and covering wideouts is the new defensive formula for today's NFL defenses and guys who can do it even a little bit stand to make some serious coin!
