Bentley ACL

I'm saying there is nothing wrong with grooming. Lots of team groom someone for one year. Chill the hell out on the short term only approach. Swanson can end up being a good pick for us.

And Swanson is depth. If Raiola or a guard gets hurt and we didn't have Swanson, you'd be bitching too. Lawson did a solid job as did Isa. Slay and Mathis started and did well.

Wait until they suck at least to complain

yup...that's the same argument you've used for several players who haven't worked out for us lol. Im sure Swanson will start for us one day...whether hes any good who knows. But you simply could have drafted 1 when the need presents itself....oh weird...kinda like how everyone has wanted new cbs for the last 5 years when the need presented itself and mayhew has done nothing to fix it. SO again ill say it....that's what were arguing...he placed a 3rd TE and a backup center over secondary help. Try to keep up...

Ugh. You don't burn a 3rd round pick on backup depth for your center position. Believe it or not, teams actually get good value and immediate impact players in the 3rd round.

Lions drafted a center that graded very low when there are plenty of bigger needs.

Lawson has played just as well if not better than Gilbert and Dennard. The Browns have been so happy with Gilbert they are already talking about reducing his role. And Dennard has been hurt and was inactive for game 1.

And the center pick was a good pick we needed a back up and he plays guard as well. One guy that backs up 2 spots is great for roster flexibility. And when Dom does retire he can step in. Center in the NFL is one of the hardest positions to learn. Right after QB and MLB.

im positive youre a homer that did a complete 180 on ebron once he was a lion lol.

Just to chime in and give my opinions (cause what else is this board for?)...

1. Swanson was a good pick. Don't care who says different. It was a need to bring him in and groom him for the future, and I was very high on the kid in college. I mentioned him headed into the draft several times.

The Lions have a very good, and very coherent O-Line right now. You don't just drop a rookie into that when you have a choice. You give him a year to learn, and they did. I'll defend that pick any day.

2. I've said since the draft, I am happy with the Ebron pick ONLY because it means we eventually move on from Droptimus Prime. No matter how you slice it, Ebron was a luxury pick in round one, and we didn't have the luxury of a luxury pick right there.

The secondary is thin. Scary thin. Amy Winehouse thin.

We needed a Ha Ha Clintox-Dex or a Darqueze Dennard a lot more than we needed another TE.

Ebron may be an elite player. He may be a blue chip guy. I understand why they took a guy that had rated that highly on thier board. It was still a bad pick for this particular team.

Fauria had a bigger impact on the week 1 game than Ebron did. That's not to say one game is a good sample, or that Ebron won't be (clearly) better than Fauria in the long run, but we obviously didn't need another pass catching weapon MORE than we needed bodies that can defend in the secondary.

About the time Glover hobbled off the field, assholes all over began to pucker, and I am betting not even the biggest homer was thinking "Well, at least we have Ebron" right about then. Or at least not without a sarcastic tone to their inner voice.

But, this is where we are now. We have a good win in the book for week one. We're in position to compete. We have to hope this all plays out for the best, and the management staff learns from this and gets us some DBs next season. All the bitching in the world won't change this team's fortunes now.

Stafford played a nearly perfect game. Megatron is the best there is today. Tate showed what he can add to this offense. We can win shootouts, so even if we can't stop the Rodgers of the league from torching us, there is no evidence they can stop our offense either.

Let the season play out, and hope the secondary improves.

Homers and overly negative posters....

This is what sanity looks like. Take notes.

I agree with basically 99 percent of what you said Ink. I split paths with you on the center position. Swanson was not though of highly at all by scouts and by GMs. He seems to be Raiola Part 2. Undersized, and has to use his tenacity and competitiveness to hang at the NFL level. No doubt Dom has had some decent years. But overall, he's been an average to below average center that gets pushed back by the better D Tackles in the league.

If you are going to groom a center for the future, use a 1st or 2nd round pick on a guy you know is going to be elite.

Hilliard out for the season, we need all the oline men we can get.

Would've been less of a need than Ebron pick even was

this future shit you speak of is fine if it pans out....typically when mayhew takes luxury picks to be groomed for the future (broyles) they don't pan out which makes them simply a waste of space. What if raiola comes back next year? were then wasting a 3rd rd pick to sit on the bench for 2 years? In the meantime we have a swiss cheese defense. Theres no reason to pick and groom a frikken center. Id just like to see some of our picks actually play and produce every once in awhile...is that too much to ask?

You labled back up center a need going into the draft...ok. I named RT as a weak spot that there was going to be great value there at 10. I named outside WR as a weak spot and we have Moncrief amongst several others staring us in the face in rd 3....We have Fuller dressing as the only outside WR behind Calvin. Everyone had CB/S as weak spots for this team...everyone was right. So should we really be picking potential future centers in 1 or 2 years with all these needs? None of our needs were addressed and the injury bug has already begun...this seems to be a familiar story, no?!

we had no depth at center and Riola is old as hell. If he went down and we didnt have a back up you would be complaining about that. There is no team in the NFL that has solid quality depth at every position. With all our weapons on offense you are bringing up the fact we didnt draft a receiver in the third and instead got our center of the future.

I think C of the future is a bit much at this point. Honestly we don't know what he'll do..

its about upgrading your team at positions of need. Mayhew proved we needed more weapons by selecting one in the top 10 of the draft, remember? I also said we needed help at WR going into the draft....I would have just picked one much much later with one of the deepest WR classes the NFL has ever seen.

Back up centers are a dime a dozen in the NFL....ours isn't any better than the ones on the FA lists right now. We wasn't very good in college.....and hes not even playing right now on a team full of holes. Start plugging some holes before you start picking guys that MIGHT help your team in 2 years.

This is an ongoing theme for Mayhew....blowing luxury picks on the likes of broyles, leshoure, ebron, back up center....when we have glaring needs in several spots.

Injuries are part of the sport. Good teams have depth. There are no excuses in the NFL.

I thought Rodney Austin was our backup Center? What the hell were we keeping him around for?
