Boesch is released + signs with new york

Really, we're fucked no matter what for the bench because we have zero good options. They all suck.

Whenever Don Kelly strides to the plate, I reflect on the notion that with a little more commitment and patience, I would have played Major League Baseball.

Though I despise Don Kelly, I still like him more than Boesch. Neither can hit but at least Kelly can be a competent defensive sub at multiple positions whereas Boesch is Delmon bad in the field. Not that I want Kelly back on the team, but if I had to choose to be stuck with one, Id pick Kelly.

Is there something I'm not seeing? I hear all the time, multiple positions - sure he can play 2nd and 3rd and 1st and OF but is he any good at those? And being better than BB or Delmon isn't a good answer. I always thought of him as an average defensive player.

The difference is when you say "neither can hit" is too vague.

Don Kelly career OPS+ 69, oWAR -1.1
Brennan Boesch career OPS+ 96, oWAR 2.2

Brennan blows Donny out of the water as much with a bat, as Kelly does Boesch with a glove.

I understand where you're coming from, but myself, I'd rather have Boesch, simply because he has more upside than only being a defensive replacement on a team full of defensive replacements (Santiago, Worth, and Kobernus, Berry maybe).

Really, I dont want either. We should have gotten a real right handed bench guy in the offseason, but apparently DD thinks that the bench players are pointless.

I think Kelly is a true bench player. No stick but can play multiple positions. I honestly don't know what kind of utility players are out there that can play IF and OF...probably a ton of them but they probably all hit like Don Kelly.

Well the fact us a utility player is not really needed in the AL.

We have backups for the positions of guys who may need a rest, or may get injured. Ramon can cover 3B, SS and 2B. More than likely we will have 2 bench guys who are qualified outfielders aside from the starters, and we have a backup catcher.

The only time we really need a utility guy is when we play in NL parks, and double switches and PH'ing starts happening. Don Kelly is probably a great teammate, and his versatility is nice, but in serious decline.

I'm not a fan of having anyone on the roster who's only value is as a situational glove. Especially another one that hits lefty.

Exactly. Kelly is not needed, but last season during the playoffs I told myself, after he got that big hit, I wouldn't complain about him.

I was pro Don Kelly for a while, especially when he displaced Inge at 3rd for a while. but frankly his defense was not that good last season, and he's only getting older.

We gotta stop with all the 2nd and 3rd chances, Inge, Raburn, Kelly...at some point we have to just slam the door, Don Kelly is no longer worthy of a 40-man roster spot, let alone a spot on the 25 man active roster.

I have no ill feelings towards Kelly, and I'd wish he'd ride off in to the sunset before that can change.

I will say, Boesch has the frame and the contact skills to eventually become a serviceable starter for someone. He really needs to hit for power though or he's going to be worthless since he cannot take walks. Contact skills are very good for a player of his size (and thus his strike zone).

He really is the everyman that makes me regret not trying to continue. He's just so marginally athletic.

If they fix his swing, fire McClendon for incompetence. Betcha he will still suck though.

Wow ny eh he could do well there with that porch he has an inside out swing though curious to see if they can do what we couldn't

No Leyland's boy Don Kelly is now a shoe in, now. I was wondering how he was going to make the team this year?

Well, every team needs a good utility player like a Don Kelley. He'll find a way to make more than 1 contribution this season.
