Coronainsanity

since then, "we" have learned you can't take a static mortality rate for something like covid-19 and apply it going forward.

the mortality rate was 2% with official lockdowns, bans on dining & drinking indoors, kids learning remotely, sporting events played without fans, etc., and the percentage of the population who aren't retarded taking personal precautions... all keeping the infection rate down, allowing severe cases to get health care.

had we not done those things, it's likely the mortality rate would have been higher.

Well since kids are mostly in the classroom now, more businesses are open, people are eating and drinking indoors, more fans are in attendance at games, the rate is still declining.

Point being, they did not need to go into complete shutdown mode. Especially considering there are far more people carrying the virus today than there were one year ago.

Chances are much of the unwillingness to follow precautions is due to the MSM creating false hysteria resulting in complete shutdowns, the most egregious being the closing of "non-essential" business resulting in shortages of things like toilet paper which irked a large portion of citizens.

If they just said to wear masks and keep 6' apart, there would not likely have been a drastic difference in outcome and people would have been more willing to comply instead of becoming so hostile.

Granted, MUCH of the blame also belongs to Trump being his regular asshole self in not setting a proper example with masks among other things that got idiots on the far right all worked up, but the MSM creating unwarranted mass hysteria on the Left was just as horrible in working up the far left idiots.

Really? We had death rates higher than most. 600k dead and I think most people agree an actual complete shutdown for two weeks would nip this thing in the bud, but that never happened.

Does the ?actual complete shutdown? include the closing of all international travel in and out of the country?

This is oversimplified BS that the MSM and Liberals used to discredit the Trump administration while pushing their Fearmongering agenda, which in your case appears to have worked like a charm.

1. This virus is not something that will stop after 2 weeks. The incubation itself can be over 1 week and then it gets passed from 1 family member to another inside the same house. After 2 weeks, someone will still be contagious and after the "miracle" 2 week period they will need another 2 week period, and then probably another.

2. Do you honestly believe the small apartment living individuals had on hand enough supplies to feel at all comfortable with a 2 week shutdown? How about families who are reliant on bottled water due to their water supply having contaminants?

3. Even IF the US were to capitulate and comply to this, do you really believe the rest of the world would? So after those 2 weeks, how many people will cross the border or travel to US (remember the UN is in NYC)?

4. You have a science background, I would expect you to have the ability to apply this level of analysis and more to the flawed BS that is the "miracle 2 week quarantine cure". Human nature and society are not confined to a fucking petri dish and all environmental variables controlled. You should grasp that lab results like this will NEVER see comparable results in Real World setting.

5. As a scientist, recognize the 98% survivability.

6. IF they had not enforced the extreme measures that they did, and tone down the Doomsday BS, you and most of society would be less afraid and recognize this is part of Nature. When was the last time Humans actually defeated Nature? Even diseases previously considered "eradicated" have reappeared recently. A virus does not become extinct as easily as animals or plants that we can see. The inability to see a virus is its greatest strength, and one humans will always need to be more understanding that they need to run their course, like the flu, colds, and other viruses. This is a Darwinian moment, and science will lose to Nature in this battle. MAYBE everyone gets vaccinated before it mutates to a version that the vaccine does not protect against, but my bet is it will mutate into less lethal variant within 5 years and not be a problem, similar to how Spanish Flu eventually disappeared.

7. Even with all the vaccines already produced and pushed out, they are only now beginning trials with children, a group that traditionally spreads diseases more rapidly. How long until the children first begin mass vaccination? 6 months??? That is a massive % of the population still carrying the virus.

8. Even if every vaccine was able to be injected into every non-vaccinated adult in the world, the time to produce, ship, and inject will be over a year from now. At 10 million shots per day, and needing 2 shots in most cases, that equates to at least 12 Billion doses needing to be manufactured and injected (that is generously accounting for single shot J&J, which is dramatically less effective)...so that is 12B/10MPD=1,200 days...so we are needing roughly 3 years to get everyone vaccinated (this accounts for needing about 80% of population to be vaccinated in the hope that will be sufficient). In that same timeframe it is historically likely that the virus will have mutated into less lethal variant and the more lethal disappears. Virus of this type do not benefit from killing its host, it naturally wants to become less lethal and more contagious over time.

Human fear and ego have reigned throughout this entire pandemic. At some point humans will claim they defeated it, but nature knows better...it will be due to nature running its natural course as it has throughout history. I am fully confident Human Hubris will carryover to the next pandemic as well, resulting in similar mindsets of shutting everything down until a vaccine is manufactured...oh, and the hospitals...and businesses supplying those entities...and businesses supplying them...andnthe shipping companies...and energy production facilities...and water companies...and businesses supplying them...and...and...and... seriously, just let businesses stay open and inact Social Distancing and PPE, which is what the governments are finally getting around to after their initial comments that the lockdowns would only last 3 months. LOL, more hubris that Nature glanced at and laughed while flipping us the bird.

I know, right?

Some of us even consider McDonalds ?cuisine.?

And McD's is not so inexpensive anymore, at least in NYC area, due to the increased wages.
A 1/4 lb burger, fries, and coke will run $10 after tax. About 5 years ago, could get it for $5 as I recall, but I only have it maybe 2x/year so might be off on when it was still $5.

I almost never eat starch.

I used to occasionally get the cheeseburger in a lettuce wrap, no fries, but haven?t in a while.

The notion makes me want to puke.

The only thing I get at McDonalds is breakfast. I will get a Burrito and a large black coffee for $2. The coffee is really good there and the Burrito isn't too bad. Can't beat it for $2.

I used to occasionally get the egg McMuffin and pitch the muffin... but haven?t had an urge in a while.

If I have a really bad headache, I?ll get a McDonalds medium coke, no ice, as a chaser to an Extra-Strength Excedrin. The circumstances have to be rather dire for that solution.

It?s also a stop for coffee when on the road to Mid Michigan, until we encounter Tim Hortons.

How can science compare to the notes you cobbled together from whatever FoxNews/NY Post/etc. sources you watch, and facebook?

I used to occasionally get the egg McMuffin and pitch the muffin... but haven?t had an urge in a while.

Used to have the sausage mcmuffin w/ egg or the bacon egg and cheese biscuit and when convenient - in the 90s they often had them 2 for $2 and I lived around the corner from the one across from Wrigley field so I ate a bunch of them back in the day. I've been off fast food for a while now save for the occasional Chik-fil-A or Wendy's spicey chick sangweech.

you can get any size for a dollar now - I get the unsweetened iced tea when I've run out of home brewed.

Food prices are increasing everywhere (link):
Food prices in 2020 increased by 3.9% from 2019, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Prices for the food-at-home category, where the buyer is the consumer, also climbed at the same 3.9% rate last year, the largest yearly rise since 2011.
The article goes on to blame China:
Food inflation is at almost twice the Federal Reserve?s inflation target, says Sal Gilbertie, president and chief investment officer at Teucrium Trading. Meats and grains, and grain products such as bread, show ?much higher overall rates of inflation,? he says. BLS data reveal an unadjusted increase of 5.5% in the meats expenditure category from January 2020 to January 2021.

Gilbertie attributes that higher inflation rate to the rise in grain prices and the ?failure and subsequent rebuild of China?s hog herd.? The Chinese had to import huge amounts of animal proteins to replace the lack of meat from hog herds hit hard by African swine fever. Then China imported grains to feed the hogs as the nation worked to rebuild their numbers, he says.

Restaurant chain CEOs and owners will claim it's because of worker wages though, a view consistent with their economic interests. Who knows what to believe?

Too bad we can't think for ourselves and figure out why this might be happening.

They are close, but payroll/salaries is typically the largest expenditure in the full service restaurant industry...followed by the cost of food.

To make things more complicated, beverages are the biggest profit center for most restaurants. With so many restaurants being closed to dine in during the pandemic, my guess is a lot of them had to raise food prices to make up for the loss of their biggest source of profits.

but... food prices in grocery stores are going up as well. That was in the first quote of my post.

right, but I was talking about the restaurant portion of your post.

but if food prices are going up both in grocery stores and restaurants around the country, it can't be because of high restaurant workers' salaries...

ah nevermind
