Detroit Tigers Minor League Notes

Detroit Tigers:
I don?t think it can be denied, the Tigers farm system is off to a strong start this season. For the most part. While pitching was considered the strength, and Drew Smyly certainly has shown extremely well, it?s been the position guys doing it for the Tigers. I still don?t think the Tigers are a top 20 system yet, but they are getting close. Nick Castellanos, Avisail Garcia, Rob Brantly, and James McCann have all been pretty darn good for top 10 prospects. Even better than good. They have also gotten guys like Steven Moya and Eugenio Suarez to emerge as well, and all of these guys are either young for their league, or age appropriate.
Pitching wise, Jacob Turner just came back from injury, so besides Smyly, nobody has taken a big step forward. Casey Crosby and Andy Oliver have been about as advertised, while guys like Brian Flynn, Alex Burgos, Tommy Collier, Josue Carreno, and Kyle Ryan have been solid.

Congratulations to Lakeland's Nick Castellanos on being named the Florida State League Player of the Week for April 30-May 6.

He's on the 7-day DL according to the Flying Tigers website. Last game he appeared in was April 26th.

Just got news: surgery tomorrow. It's gonna be a quick recovery and I should be back in a month! <{- from Daniel Fields, Lakeland.

Should be a story link on this soon.

Daniel Fields, is temporarily on the shelf withan abdominal-muscle tear that will require surgery.

Offensive Players of the Week. For the week ending May 6.
Florida State League: Nick Castellanos, Lakeland.
(.464/.531/.643, 7 G, 13-for-28, 2 2B, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 4 R, 4 BB, 3 K, 2 SB)
The Florida State League seems unlikely to feature Nick Castellanos for long, as it has been wholly unable to contain him in the first month of the season. A first-round pick in 2010, the 20-year-old Castellanos is MLB.com's No. 46 prospect and currently leads the Minor Leagues with a .404 batting average. He has hits in 27 of his 29 games and multiple hits in 14 of them, including a 4-for-5 performance against first-place Dunedin on April 27. Castellanos went 8-for-13 against the Blue Jays in three games Tuesday-Thursday to help him earn Player of the Week honors.
