Baseball Prospectus Hit List for June 5.

Teams are ordered based on Adjusted Hit List Factor, a computer generated number, and the author isn't responsible for the order of the teams.
Adjusted Hit List Factor: Adjusts Hit List Factor (HLF) for quality of league.
The league quality adjustment is based on historical performance of batters against pitchers from the various leagues (primarily in interleague play, but also players who switch teams midseason).

Do Tigers have to worry about a shortstop?
from JasonBeck'sTigersblog

The MLB Players Association would have its say, potentially with a grievance through arbitration, which would add more time to the process. The arbitration process for Ryan Braun after his reported positive test two offseasons ago took a little over four months.

Take in all the factors, and the idea of the Tigers being without a shortstop in a couple weeks seems a bit premature. Depending on how the process goes, the Tigers could end up doing the same thing they were on track to do all along, looking at their options for a shortstop in the offseason.

That said, it?s a reminder just how thin the Tigers are at short. Utilityman Ramon Santiago has filled in for stretches at shortstop over the last several years, but he?ll turn 34 at the end of August, and he has looked overmatched at the plate. Omar Infante came up as a shortstop through the Tigers system, but that was more than a decade ago, and he hasn?t played a game at short since 2010. Danny Worth has missed just under two months with a bruised heel and is working out in extended Spring Training. Hernan Perez (a second baseman who can play shortstop) and Eugenio Suarez (a shortstop) are budding prospects at Double-A Erie, but even getting them ready for next year might be an aggressive timetable.

Leyland on lack of Austin Jackson updates: "I mean, I know it?s of interest to you. It?s of interest to me too, so I don?t mean that sarcastically."

Leyland: "When there?s something new, something on Austin Jackson, you?ll be the first to know."

Leyland has no comment on Biogenesis.
DETROIT -- Manager Jim Leyland has been a voice on a lot of topics, having been a longtime member of Major League Baseball's Committee on On-Field Matters. The ongoing investigation into the Biogenesis Clinic in Miami and potential discipline to come out of it, however, is something he's not touching.

"I don't think I'm going to comment on any of that, because I don't really know anything about it," Leyland said on Wednesday. "I think it's better off for me to just keep my mouth shut. I truthfully don't know anything about that."

Leyland's remarks came a day after a report on ESPN's Outside the Lines stated that MLB could use former Biogenesis head Anthony Bosch's cooperation to seek suspensions on up to 20 players, possibly including shortstop Jhonny Peralta.

"I'm usually not afraid to speak my mind," Leyland said, "but I want to know what I'm talking about when I do, and I truthfully know nothing about this stuff."

Garcia getting it done and having fun in the process.
DETROIT -- The more Avisail Garcia starts in the outfield, the stronger the praise from his manager.
As Garcia readied on Wednesday for his sixth consecutive start, including four in a row in center field, skipper Jim Leyland all but granted that he has earned the uptick in playing time, both offensively and defensively.
"He has accounted for himself well," Leyland said. "He's doing fine."

And he's doing most of it in a position he wasn't expected to play in the big leagues. Though Garcia played center field for much of last summer at Double-A Erie, between Nick Castellanos and Daniel Fields on the corners, he was primarily seen as a corner outfielder in the Majors. Besides, Austin Jackson's presence in center pretty much made having Garcia there a luxury rather than a necessity.

But once Jackson went on the disabled list with a hamstring pull, the Tigers needed a center fielder. With no other clear options, Garcia became the fill-in. He's playing better than stopgap.

Garcia's frame fits the mold of a corner outfielder. At 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, he almost dwarfs platoon left fielder Matt Tuiasosopo.
When Garcia runs down a fly ball, however, that's when the his speed begins to show.
"He's a freak, man," Tuiasosopo said. "He's big, strong, fast. I was impressed in Spring Training when I saw him in the outfield."

Garcia, for his part, is happy playing any outfield spot if it's in Detroit. Still, he admits he's having fun in center.
"I have more room to run to the ball," he said. "Playing center field with [Torii] Hunter [in right], we have fun a lot. I like to play center. I like to play right. I like to play left. Wherever they play me, I'm going to play hard. But yeah, I have fun."

Prince pounding against southpaws this season.
DETROIT -- With a three-game homer streak entering Wednesday, Prince Fielder is on the kind of power tear that Tigers officials and fans alike were waiting to see. Lost in the power trip, however, is the fact that he's pounding the ball against left-handed pitchers this year.

That was demonstrated on Tuesday. Though Fielder's 12th homer of the year made headlines, it was an add-on after the Tigers jumped on lefty Matt Moore early. Manager Jim Leyland, in fact, feels that Fielder's best at-bat of the night came in the first inning, when he worked the count full in a nine-pitch at-bat that ended in a single to left.

"Moore was really throwing nasty," Leyland said, "and I thought [Fielder] had a great at-bat to fight him off. It wasn't a bullet, but I thought that was a terrific at-bat. Then, you know, against another lefty, [reliever Cesar Ramos], he got a sac fly to center field. He had a heck of a night."

A major reason behind Fielder's career-best .313 average last season was his ability to hit lefties; he batted .289 against southpaws last year while hitting right-handers at a .328 clip. This season his success off lefties has helped balance his struggles against right-handers.

Fielder entered Wednesday's game batting .373 with four home runs off southpaws, compared with .241 with eight homers off righties.
Among players with enough plate appearances to qualify for a batting title, Fielder entered Wednesday tied for 10th in batting average off lefties.
