Detroit Tigers Team Notes

The Tigers are not believed to have shown any significant interest in any of the big names on the free-agent market, and seem content to make smaller improvements to a team that won 95 games in 2011. If the Tigers make a big-money signing this winter, it seems a lot more likely to be Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes than Mark Buehrle, Aramis Ramirez, Coco Crisp or other big names that have been speculated about. It's still not clear how soon Cespedes will be declared a free agent, because of delays in paperwork needed to establish residency in the Dominican Republic. One possibility is that Cespedes could try to establish residency in Mexico, instead.

Tigers pooh-poohing their hunt for a No. 5 starter is hogwash. Ask Buehrle's people about that nonsense. They'll still acquire someone.
Have no doubt they will seek a short-term No. 5 guy who can shift to long relief. But they want insurance coming out of spring camp.
best time to snag a #5 type is late when the players are scrambling for a job.
Focus nows shifts to Cespedes. He's this year's Martinez/Ordonez/Cabrera/Pudge pick-up..
invest in good scouts -- and lots of them. You get a consensus from critical, conservative talent judges, and you go with it.
Suspect the Tigers are prepared to outbid anyone.
Outbid anyone within reason, that is. If the Yankees wave $80 million at Cespedes -- and they've signed blank checks before -- they win.
Teams continue to say they expect Cespedes' free-agent ticket to be punched as early as this week. Red tape might extend it a few days.
when Dave Dombrowski isn't saying much about a player, he's SCREAMING - us Tiger fans have come to know this, everyone else?
Dombrowski likes to remain in control and keep everyone guessing. When you expect nothing, it's time to expect something.

Since last post this morning, and also on Monday, had some modem problems. Comcast is coming Wednesday, with a new one. Getting online comes and goes as was the case today for 6 hours. I will post until I lose it again.

TUESDAY, 12:16pm: The Phillies are not shopping Polanco and are only interested in trading him if they can't re-sign Jimmy Rollins, reports ESPN's Jayson Stark. The Phillies refer to keep Rollins and Polanco on the left side of their infield, but they could add someone like Aramis Ramirez if Rollins leaves. Stark says the Phillies are willing to eat about a third of Polanco's contract, which equates to $2.4MM.

The Athletics are looking for young, high-upside outfielders in any Gio Gonzalez trade, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Cespedes would almost certainly bat leadoff. He's a natural CF who can play a corner spot more easily than Jackson could shift.

Tigers will definitely tender Young. You don't cut him loose when (a) he can help you with his bat and (b) gain you something in a trade.

Bullpens are always unpredictable. For everybody. If Alburquerque's healthy, he's got shutdown stuff. Perry has been the guy who's fallen.
That's why they're looking for seventh-inning help. My concern, if I'm a Tigers fan: Can you expect Valverde to luck out as much as he has?

Wonder if Detroit trades with Cincinnati... they have a surplus of infielders.

Tigers very quiet in Dallas, but you know DD is going to do something. He always keeps everything close to the vest.
