Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

Our coverage of the Arizona Fall League continues. Jakob Marsee remains the top hitter with a 1.442 OPS in 44 plate appearances. The title of top pitcher is less clear. Perhaps it?s 27-year-old southpaw reliever Jake McSteen? He?s worked 4.2 innings of hitless ball with six strikeouts. He hit one batter.

Let?s see who else merits a look.

Five Big Hype Prospects

Wilmer Flores, 22, SP, DET
(AA) 80.2 IP, 9.15 K/9, 3.57 BB/9, 3.90 ERA

Flores performs like someone with a Major League future. He induces plenty of whiffs, limits walks, and generally runs around a 50 percent ground ball rate. Typically, pitchers who can show those three traits go on to have a nice career (health permitting). Sometimes, they have to take the long road like Cristopher Sanchez or Erick Fedde.

My contacts don?t like Flores? pitch design, though it?s been at least half a year since I?ve received an update on that front. In brief, as of April, his pitches didn?t tunnel well. This is his second stint in the AFL. In three games, all relief appearances, he?s thrown eight innings while allowing nine hits, one walk, one hit batter, one run, and nine strikeouts. Flores is Rule 5 eligible this winter. Barring catastrophe, he?ll soon be on the Tigers 40-man roster. Though he has the look and stuff of a starter, a debut in the bullpen would allow him to ignore those pitch design concerns.

October 17 in Tigers and mlb history:

1911: The Philadelphia Athletics score twice in the 11th inning to beat the New York Giants, 3 - 2, in Game 3 of the World Series. Frank Baker hits a home run in the 9th inning off Christy Mathewson to tie the score, 1 - 1. Baker will be tagged with the nickname "Home Run" Baker for his exploits.

1915: In a game between the Indianapolis ABCs and a team of white "All-Stars" from the city, trouble breaks out in the 5th inning when All-Stars baserunner Donie Bush is declared safe by (white) umpire Jimmy Scanlon on an attempted steal of second base, while most observers contend he was out. ABCs second baseman Bingo DeMoss objects vehemently and starts to fight the umpire, at which point 19-year-old CF Oscar Charleston runs in from his official and decks the official with one punch, starting a huge brawl that engulfs players, fans and police officers alike. After order is restored, both DeMoss and Charleston are arrested, although they will be let out on bail and allowed to accompany their team on a planned barnstorming tour of Cuba. When they return to face trial on December 7th, Charleston is fined $10 and DeMoss $5, but the police use the fight as a pretext to ban any further games between teams of different races in the city.

1919: Babe Ruth appears in a Boston Red Sox uniform for the last time when he plays in a WWI American Jewish Relief charity game held in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

1964: Despite a 99-63 record, the Yankees fire manager Yogi Berra after losing the World Series to the Cardinals in seven games. Manager Johnny Keane of the World Champs Cardinals resigns unexpectedly. He will take the Yankee job which opens as the result of the firing of Berra.

1968: Willie Horton and Mickey Lolich campaigned with Vice President Hubert Humphrey during the '68 presidential race.

1971: Roberto Clemente of the Pittsburgh Pirates caps off an incredible World Series by belting a home run in Game 7 against Mike Cuellar of the Baltimore Orioles. Steve Blass wins a 2 - 1 decision and Clemente is named Series MVP after hitting .414.

1974: The Oakland Athletics defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3 - 2, to win their third straight World Series. Joe Rudi's 7th-inning home run provides the winning margin. The Athletics join the New York Yankees as the only franchises in major league history to win three straight titles.

1978: The New York Yankees win their fourth straight game, 7 - 2, to clinch their second consecutive World Championship over the Dodgers. Brian Doyle and Series MVP Bucky Dent have three hits apiece.

1979: Willie Stargell hits a two-run home run to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 4 - 1 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles and the World Series in seven games.

1982: Robin Yount records his second four-hit game of the World Series to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6 - 4 victory in Game 5 and give his team a 3-2 lead overall over St. Louis. Yount is the first player ever to have multiple four-hit games in one World Series.

1989: Minutes before Game 3 of the World Series between Oakland and the San Francisco Giants, an earthquake hits the San Francisco Bay area.
The game is postponed and the Series will only resume 11 days later.

1991: In Game 7 of the NLCS, the Atlanta Braves' Brian Hunter's two-run home run in the 1st inning is all John Smoltz needs as he tosses a 4 - 0 shutout over the Pittsburgh Pirates, as the Braves win their first National League pennant since their move from Milwaukee.

2000: Mariners' Dan Wilson singles to snap a postseason hitless streak of 42 at-bats. The streak, begun in 1995, broke Marv Owen's postseason record 31 hitless at-bats in the 1934 & 1935 World Series.

2013: The Red Sox defeat the Tigers, 4 - 3, in Game 5 of the ALCS. The Sox take an early 4 - 0 lead, but Jon Lester begins tiring in the 5th, when he gives up a first run. The Tigers add runs in the next two innings, but can't tie the game as Koji Uehara records a five-out save.

2021: Major League Baseball announces that it will now mandate teams to provide adequate housing for their minor league players, after numerous stories over recent months have highlighted the poor living conditions that players are often forced to endure as a result of the pittance they are being paid while toiling in the minors.

'Days of Roar' Tigers Podcast: Detroit Tigers' 40-man roster: Who stays and who's gone? 61 minutes.

On this episode: This week, Mark and Evan forgo "The Big 2" format and instead opt to have an episode-spanning discussion on the makeup of the Detroit Tigers' 40-man roster. While it's clear certain players are guaranteed locks or departures, the guys also look at some positional redundancies and analyze what to do with pieces lacking minor league options.

October 18 in Tigers and mlb history:

1910: The Philadelphia Athletics pound the Chicago Cubs, 9 - 3, for a 2-0 lead in the World Series. Eddie Collins collects three hits, including two doubles and two stolen bases.

1924: The Kansas City Monarchs stage a dramatic 9th-inning three-run rally to come from behind and defeat Hilldale, 3 - 2, in Game 8 of the Colored World Series to take a 4-3-1 lead in the best-of-nine series. Following the game, Hilldale manager Frank Warfield verbally assaults catcher Louis Santop, blaming his defensive lapse for the team's loss.

1932: The Baseball Writers Association of America MVP awards are announced, with Jimmie Foxx winning in the American League and Chuck Klein in the National League.

1947: The Detroit Tigers released Skeeter Webb.

1950: Connie Mack, at age 87, retires as manager of the Philadelphia Athletics after 50 years, and Jimmy Dykes is named to replace him. Mack, together with Ben Shibe, founded the Athletics in 1901. He also holds managerial records for seasons (53), games (7,755), wins (3,731), losses (3,948), and tenure with one club (50 seasons, 1901-1950).
Until 2011, when Tony La Russa did so, no one else had even managed 5,000 major league games, less than two-thirds of Mack's total.
His Athletics teams would win the World Series five times. His teams won the American League pennant in 1905, 1910-1911, 1913-1914 and 1929-1931. Between 1910-1914 he had the services of the famous $100,000 infield, including Eddie Collins, while in 1929-1931 he had players such as Lefty Grove, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, Mickey Cochrane and Max Bishop. However, he was hurt financially by the Great Depression and was forced to sell his star players to meet operating expenses.

1955: Ralph Kiner announces his retirement. The future Hall of Famer, who slumped to 18 home runs and a .243 batting average this year, leaves the game with 369 home runs in 10 seasons.

1960: Instituting a mandatory retirement age of 65, New York Yankees co-owners Dan Topping and Del Webb relieve manager Casey Stengel of his duties. He posted a 1,149-696 record for the Yankees, including 10 American League pennants and seven World Championships, but the Mets would welcome him back to NYC in 1962

1984: Sparky Anderson named AL Manager of the Year.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CvEVAX3VMAA_0Fp.jpg

1994: Storm Davis of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
1994: Mickey Tettleton of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2000: Sean Runyan of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2004: After 5 hours, 49 minutes and 471 pitches, the Boston Red Sox outlast the Yankees, 5 - 4, in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series. The Red Sox, down three games to none at the start of the game, stage a remarkable 9th-inning comeback just to get to extra innings, when pinch-runner Dave Roberts steals second base with Mariano Rivera on the mound before scoring the tying run on Bill Mueller's single.
Boston DH David Ortiz, who is the first player in history to hit two walk-off home runs during the postseason, completes the comeback win with 2-run shot in the bottom of the 12th.

2007: Joe Torre is out after 12 seasons as manager of the New York Yankees when he refuses to take a large pay cut to return in 2008. The Yankees have reached the postseason in all of Torre's seasons at the helm.

2012: The Detroit Tigers complete a four-game sweep of the Yankees in the ALCS with an 8 - 1 win at home. The Tigers build a 6-0 lead after four innings, chasing CC Sabathia, as Max Scherzer cruises to the win. Delmon Young, who is named series MVP, drives in the winning run for the fourth straight game while the Tigers homer four times. The Yankees were thoroughly outplayed, never leading once in the four games, scoring only 6 runs and batting a mere .157.

2016: The Detroit Tigers signed Arcenio Leon as a free agent.

2018: The Red Sox win the American League pennant by defeating Houston, 4 - 1, in Game 5 of the ALCS. David Price turns in a great performance, shutting out the Astros for the first 6 innings. All of Boston's runs score on long balls, a solo shot by J.D. Martinez in the 3rd and three-run homer by Rafael Devers in the 6th, both off Justin Verlander. Jackie Bradley, who had 9 RBIs in the series, is named the winner of the ALCS MVP Award.

2020: The Dodgers make it to the World Series for the third time in the last four years by defeating the Braves, 4 - 3, in Game 7 of the NLCS. Highlights include late-game homers by Kik? Hernandez and Cody Bellinger that put the Dodgers ahead, a home run-robbing catch by RF Mookie Betts, and an egregious baserunning blunder that erases two Braves runners, both in scoring position, on one play. Corey Seager goes hitless in this game, but his 5 homers and 11 RBIs in the series were key to the Dodgers overcoming deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 to come out on top, and he his named NLCS MVP.

2022: The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Ali Sanchez off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

(Editor?s Note: The original blog sent out contained the wrong poll. The correct one has replaced it and may be seen below.)

This year?s playoffs have journalists and fans talking about the wide mix of teams who earned a slot. In particular, how teams? payrolls varied so widely. Some with very low salaries and others among the top in spending.

Then there are the teams who were among the biggest spenders this year but didn?t see October. Some of them finishing under .500. Some of them never in contention.

And it is the primary reason why owners will spend hundreds of millions.

To contend.

But is it as simple as spending lots of money in order to become one of MLB?s best teams?

Here?s what Scott Harris said recently as he discussed what the Tigers will do in the off-season:

?What I think about this offseason is that it?s important to remind ourselves there aren?t any shortcuts to contention. Recent history in this game will tell you. Certain organizations have either over-estimated their proximity to contention or they have tried to take a shortcut to contention by spending heavily in free agency, and it hasn?t worked.

?It hasn?t pushed them forward and, in fact, in some cases, it set them back.?

If we look at the Tigers, Mike Ilitch was one of MLB?s cheapest owners for the first 13 years. It was only in 2005 that he decided he wanted a ring and was often the owner who spent the most on free agents from 2005 through 2016. In those years, the Tigers won a lot of games but in the end they only earned
1 win out of 9 games in 2 World Series appearances.

After that, the Tigers have spent the last 7 years (and counting) tearing down and trying to rebuild.

The Tigers can look to their last foray into significant free agency spending. It was before the 2022 season, when they promised more than $400+ million for 4 free agents and ended up regressing to a 66-win season. It was this premature move that proved to be the final straw for Chris Ilitch who fired him before the end of the season.

All of this begs the question: Is it wise for a baseball team to try to buy its way into contention?

What do you think? Is this a wise strategy? Is it worth the price which is almost always a tear down and rebuild?

Or are there better and more successful ways of building a roster?

Let?s kick start some good discussion threads here ? and to take with you wherever you go during the rest of the week.

Would you support "buying a roster" in order for your team to contend in October?

1. Yes, the price is worth it.

2. No, there are better ways.
