1910: After three straight defeats and trailing the Philadelphia Athletics, 3 - 2, in the 9th inning of Game 5, the Chicago Cubs tie the score, then win, 4 - 3, in 10 innings for their only victory in the World Series. Three Finger Brown, in relief, is the winning pitcher over Chief Bender, who throws a complete game.

1920: Eight members of the Chicago White Sox are indicted for supposedly throwing the 1919 World Series. Although considered heavy favorites to win the Series, the White Sox lost to the Cincinnati Reds in eight games in what will become known as the Black Sox Scandal.

1956: The Detroit Tigers released Walt Masterson.

1960: The San Francisco Giants lose to their Tokyo counterparts, the Yomiuri Giants, 1 - 0, in the first of a 16-game exhibition series. San Francisco will lose again, 2 - 1, to the Japan All-Stars tomorrow, but will finish the series with 11 wins, four losses, and one tie.

1972: The Athletics defeat Cincinnati, 3 - 2, to win their first World Series since the franchise's move to Oakland. Gene Tenace, named Series MVP, drives in two of Oakland's runs. Future Hall of Fame pitcher Jim "Catfish" Hunter earns the victory in relief.

1975: The Detroit Tigers released Gene Michael.

1975: In a fitting finish to one of the most classic World Series ever played, the Cincinnati Reds beat the Boston Red Sox in a thrilling Game 7 victory, 4 - 3. Joe Morgan's 9th-inning looping single scoring Ken Griffey proves to be the decisive hit.

1984: World Series MVP Alan Trammell appears on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

1985: Pitcher Bret Saberhagen gives the Kansas City Royals their first World Series victory with a complete game 6 - 1 decision in Game 3. The St. Louis Cardinals had won the Series' first two games, played in Kansas City.

1986: At Fenway Park, Gary Carter hits two home runs to lead the New York Mets to a 6 - 2 victory over the Boston Red Sox and even the World Series after four games.

1991: The first-ever World Series game played in Atlanta goes to the Braves. A two-out single by Mark Lemke in the 12th inning gives the Braves
a 5 - 4 win in Game 3 of the Series. David Justice scores the winning run. Lemke had made a potentially crucial error in the top half of the inning. The contest is the longest night game in Series history at four hours and four minutes, and the second longest by innings. The Minnesota Twins use a World Series-record 23 players in the game.

1998: Luis Pineda of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2000: Although lacking big league managerial experience, Pittsburgh Pirates hitting coach Lloyd McClendon is named as the team's manager, replacing recently-fired Gene Lamont.

2001: Willie Blair of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2002: Lou Gehrig's consecutive games streak being broken by Cal Ripken, Jr. in 1995 is voted as baseball's most memorable moment by the fans participating in a Major League Baseball and MasterCard promotion. Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth's all-time home run record, Jackie Robinson becoming the first black to play in MLB, Mark McGwire breaking Roger Maris' single-season home run record and Gehrig's farewell speech were also in the top five events selected by the fans.

2003: The Florida Marlins win in dramatic fashion, 4 - 3, over the Yankees, in Game 4 of the World Series behind a lead-off home run by Alex Gonzalez in the bottom of the 12th inning. Miguel Cabrera also homers for Florida as Braden Looper has the win in relief.

2006: Sparky Anderson throws out the first pitch before Game 2 of the World Series at Comerica Park.

2006: Kenny Rogers continues his mastery in the post-season, extending his scoreless innings streak to 23 with eight shutout frames in Detroit?s 3-1 victory in Game Two of the World Series. During the game, the Cardinals ask the umpires to examine Rogers? glove for a foreign substance, citing a dark smudge on his pitching hand. Rogers claims the smudge is dirt from the mound. Carlos Guillen goes 3-for-3 with a double and triple. Craig Monroe hits his 2nd HR of the series.

2011: Albert Pujols has one of the greatest games in World Series history as he hits three homers, collects 5 hits and drives in 6 runs in Game 3 of the World Series in Arlington, TX. The Cardinals batter Texas, 16 - 7, in the third highest-scoring game ever in the Fall Classic, and are now up two games to one.
Pujols ties World Series single-game records for homers (Babe Ruth twice and Reggie Jackson), hits (Paul Molitor) and RBI (Bobby Richardson and Hideki Matsui) and sets a record with 14 total bases.

2014: Major League Baseball hands out its newly-named reliever awards for the first time.
In the National League, Craig Kimbrel of the Braves is the winner of the initial Trevor Hoffman Award,
while in the American league, Greg Holland of the Royals wins the Mariano Rivera Award.

2017: The Red Sox announce that they have hired Astros bench coach Alex Cora to be their new manager. He replaces John Farrell, who was let go on October 11th after seeing the team eliminated in the Division Series for the second straight year.

2019: Playing the first World Series game in franchise history, the Nationals win Game 1 of the 2019 World Series, 5 - 4, over the Astros. The game is billed as a match-up between star pitchers Max Scherzer and Gerrit Cole, but it's the hitters who steal the show, with Washington's Juan Soto getting three hits, including a homer and a two-run double off Cole, and George Springer homers in his fifth straight World Series game for Houston. Scherzer is the winner, working hard to get through five innings, and Sean Doolittle records the save.

2021: The Astros continue their mastery over the Red Sox's bats, shutting them down on 2 hits in Game 6 of the ALCS, 5 - 0, to win the American League pennant. Yordan Alvarez goes 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and 1 triple and scores Houston's first two runs on his way to winning the ALCS MVP Award while Kyle Tucker seals the win with a three-run homer in the 8th. Luis Garcia is the winner with 5 2/3 innings of one-hit ball.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Spencer Torkelson took a huge leap forward this season in his effort to improve as a hitter. It is commonly believed that he was promoted way too soon and the cause of much of his struggles in 2022.

This past year, he hit 31 HRs and 94 RBIs, a feat last accomplished by a Tiger back in 2016.

All good news for a team that has been at or near the bottom of MLB in offensive stats. The Tigers are in desperate need of hitters.

However, Spencer is a horrible infielder. For 2 years in a row now, he has ranked as MLB?s worst 1Ber. A position that is the easiest one to play.

In 2022, Tork cost the team 14 runs due to his fielding. This year, a slight improvement ? allowing 11 runs due to his glove work. However, he still ranks last in MLB by a wide margin.

Solid defensive skills are what the Tigers are trying to add to a rebuilding roster and unfortunately, Spencer doesn?t currently have them. It remains to be seen if he can improve enough to be an adequate defender. He is still relatively inexperienced, having only been playing at the MLB level for just less than 2 years.

Scott Harris and A. J. Hinch have both stated that going forward ? and now that Miguel Cabrera is retired ? the Tigers will not have a regular Designated Hitter. The position will be rotated among 3-4 players as the rest of MLB teams have been doing for awhile now.

This brings us to the question as to whether Tork can hit enough ? and offer solid protection in the lineup ? to offset the runs he costs the team. Will his value as a hitter overcome his inability to field?

Knowing that the Tigers still need to make significant and widespread changes to their roster, they will be unable to fill all their needs via a combination of free agents and promoting prospects. They will have to make some trades in order to get the talent they need.

And the bigger the trade piece they have, the better the return will be. Potentially, multiple players received.

Could trading Torkelson bring the Tigers back multiple pieces that will speed up the path to contention?

If not Tork, is there someone else could the Tigers trade in order to get some quality players to fill their holes?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

Should the Tigers trade Spencer Torkelson?

1. Yes

2. No

1970: The Detroit Tigers sent Wayne Redmond to the Philadelphia Phillies as part of a conditional deal.

Paul Molitor, who hits .500 (12 for 24), is named Series MVP. Following the 2010 season, a panel of experts at the MLB Network will vote this game the 14th greatest of the past fifty years.

1998: Geronimo Berroa of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2013: The Red Sox jump on the Cardinals early, scoring five runs in the first two innings, to cruise to an 8 - 1 win in Game 1 of the World Series. Mike Napoli hits a bases-clearing double in the 1st and the Sox add two more runs in the 2nd in spite of Carlos Beltran robbing David Ortiz of a grand slam with a great catch. Jon Lester pitches 7 1/3 scoreless innings for the win while Adam Wainwright takes the loss.

2018: While two of the best pitchers in the majors face off on the mound in Game 1 of the World Series in Clayton Kershaw and Chris Sale, the contest turns out to be a high-scoring affair, with Boston prevailing, 8 - 4, over the Dodgers. Andrew Benintendi has 4 hits to lead the Red Sox attack while Eduardo Nunez hits a key three-run homer in the 7th and Craig Kimbrel closes out the win.

2019: The Nationals win their record-tying eighth straight game this postseason by crushing Houston, 11 - 3, in Game 2 of the 2019 World Series. After both teams score twice in the 1st, the game settles down with no more scoring until the 7th, when Kurt Suzuki homers off Justin Verlander to start a six-run inning that gets the rout going. Stephen Strasburg is the winner.

2020: The Dodgers win Game 3 of the World Series, 6 - 2 over the Rays, behind an outstanding performance by Walker Buehler who gives up just 1 run on 3 hits and strikes out 10 in 6 innings. Justin Turner hits a 1st-inning homer off Charlie Morton, and the Dodgers keep adding to their lead with clutch hits, scoring five of their six runs with two outs.
