1908: Baseball's anthem, Take Me Out to the Ballgame, is introduced by singer Billy Murray. The songwriting team of Albert Von Tilzer (music) and Jack Norworth (words), who created the immortal tune, had never seen a game before composing the immortal number.

2019: Blaine Hardy of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2020: Major League Baseball honors its best relievers as Liam Hendriks is the recipient of the Mariano Rivera Award in the American League, after saving 14 games with an ERA of 1.78 for the Athletics. In the National League, it is rookie Devin Williams who wins the equivalent Trevor Hoffman Award; while he did not have any save opportunities, he allowed just 17 baserunners in 27 innings and had an ERA of 0.33.

WELL-RUN, WANNA BE OR TRAIN WRECK?
Totally Tigers

It?s an interesting time of year in baseball. The news is filled with playoffs and when there is an off-day, there?s an insider story about a team?s inner troubles that sneaks out. And since the end of the season, there?s been multiple reports of dysfunction within franchises.

For the second year in a row, a GM has been punished by the owner despite getting their team to the playoffs. That, of course, was Marlins GM Kim Ng who did not receive the expected contract extension after taking her team to the playoffs for the first time in over 20 years. To top it off, she was told that going into next year, she would no longer be the top person in charge of the organization.

Ng declined her contract option and followed Derek Jeter out the door (less than 2 years later), along with multiple other Front Office execs over the past couple years.

But the Boston Red Sox take the cake and crown this year after firing Chaim Bloom, their Chief Baseball Officer. Both he and his predecessor, Dave Dombrowski, were fired 3 years into their jobs. Dave just months after winning the World Series.

Now the Red Sox are looking to replace Bloom. The problem?

Over 10 people, including Ng, have turned down an invitation to interview for the job. Ten!

Can you imagine? The Sox are unable to find any qualified people who are interested in the job. A position so exclusive that there are only 30 of them in the world.

Last month, I wrote a blog about how some owners are obstacles to their teams? success. How they have the ability to thwart the best efforts of their Front Offices.

Which, given the latest news about the Marlins and Red Sox, begs the question about just how many teams are dysfunctional. And how many are just rudderless.

Then again, which MLB franchises are run well?

All of this got me thinking about how the 30 organizations would be grouped. And how?

So I came up with 4 categories based upon their actions ? or lack thereof ? and defined them as such:

October 25 in Tigers and mlb history:

1902: Frank Kitson jumped from the Brooklyn Superbas to the Detroit Tigers.

1917: The Yankees hire Miller Huggins as manager. New York was an also-ran franchise for most of the first 15 years of their existence, but became a dynasty under Huggins, who led the team from 1918 until his death in 1929. The club won their first 3 championships under Huggins, including the famed 1927 Murderer's Row team led by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.

1928: Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig bring their barnstorming tour to Dayton, Ohio! ~ " See the Emperor of Swat and the Crown Prince in Nine Innings of Baseball".

1935: After the great depression, people had money to spend on sports...
"People undoubtedly have more money to spend. For sports in general, have prospered this year," declared an optimistic National League President Ford Frick.

1937: Casey Stengel is signed as the new manager of the Boston Bees.

1955: Baseball great Branch Rickey steps down as general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates and moves into an advisory role. Joe L. Brown, son of actor Joe E. Brown, replaces him.

1955: The Cleveland Indians trade Larry Doby, the first black player in the American League, to the Chicago White Sox for Chico Carrasquel and Jim Busby.

1960: The Houston Colt .45s announce that the team has hired Gabe Paul as general manager. Paul will clash with majority owner Roy Hofheinz and will leave the following spring for Cleveland.

1971: Happy Birthday to Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez, born this day in Manoguayabo, Dominican Republic.

1972: The Philadelphia Phillies purchased Tom Haller and Don Leshnock from the Detroit Tigers.

1973: The Chicago Cubs trade six-time 20-game winner Ferguson Jenkins to the Texas Rangers for third baseman Bill Madlock and utility man Vic Harris.

1973: The San Francisco Giants trade three-time home run champion Willie McCovey, a Giant since 1959, together with minor leaguer Bernie Williams to the San Diego Padres for pitcher Mike Caldwell.

1973: The Detroit Tigers released Frank Howard.

1977: Sparky Lyle of the New York Yankees wins the A.L. Cy Young Award with a 13-5 record, 2.17 ERA, and 26 saves. Lyle is the first reliever to win the American League award, after Mike Marshall won the N.L. prize in 1974.

1978: Gaylord Perry of the San Diego Padres becomes the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues. Perry cops the National League honor with a 21-6 record and a 2.72 ERA.

1979: The Detroit Tigers traded a player to be named later to the Cincinnati Reds for Champ Summers.
The Detroit Tigers sent Sheldon Burnside (October 25, 1979) to the Cincinnati Reds to complete the trade.

1984: Sid Monge of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1985: The California Angels announce that they will not offer seven-time batting champion Rod Carew a new contract for the 1986 season, effectively ending his 19-year career. Carew finishes with 3,053 hits and a .328 career batting average.

1986: Down to their last out at Shea Stadium, the New York Mets rally for three runs with two outs in the 10th inning against the Boston Red Sox to win 6 - 5 and push the World Series to a decisive seventh game. The tie-breaking run scores on Boston first baseman Bill Buckner's error on Mookie Wilson's slow grounder. Boston Red Sox pitcher Bob Stanley throws a wild pitch that allows the New York Mets to tie the score in the 10th inning of World Series Game 6 at Shea Stadium! Vin Scully with the call.

1987: In a World Series in which neither team lost a game in its home park, the Minnesota Twins win the World Championship behind starter Frank Viola and reliever Jeff Reardon, beating the St. Louis Cardinals, 4 - 2, in Game 7. The franchise's last championship came in 1924 as the Washington Senators.

1993: Dan Gladden of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1994: Juan Samuel of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
1994: Alan Trammell of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2004: Tigers sign top draft pick Justin Verlander.

2005: The Detroit Tigers signed Lester Oliveros as an amateur free agent.
2005: The Detroit Tigers signed Brayan Villarreal as an amateur free agent.

2006: Game 4 of the World Series is rained out in St. Louis.

2012: Three Giants pitchers Madison Bumgarner, Santiago Casilla and Sergio Romo - combine on a two-hitter as San Francisco shuts out Detroit,
2 - 0, in Game 2 of the 2012 World Series. The Giants play small ball, scoring their first run on a double play grounder in the 7th after a bunt single by Gregor Blanco loads the bases, and their second in the 8th on three walks and a sacrifice fly.

2015: Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker are honored by Navin Field Crew at the site of Tiger Stadium.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DpUxPArXUAEb9f3.jpg

2017: The Astros win a World Series game for the first time in franchise history as they defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7 - 6, in 11 innings in Game two of the 2017 World Series. The Dodgers seem headed for a win as they lead, 3 - 2, in the top of the 9th, but closer Kenley Jansen surrenders a solo homer to Marwin Gonzalez to tie it, and in the 10th, Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa hit back-to-back shots off Josh Fields to give Houston a 5 - 3 lead. Ken Giles cannot nail down the win, however, as he gives up a solo homer to Yasiel Puig and a run-scoring single to Kik? Hernandez. In the 11th, the Astros again score two, on a two-run blast by George Springer off Brandon McCarthy, and while Charlie Culberson hits the eighth homer of the game off Chris Devenski with two outs in the bottom of the 11th, the Dodgers fall short by one run. The 8 homers set a World Series record, while the 5 hit in extra innings are a record for any game, postseason or regular season.

2019: Victor Alcantara of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
2019: John Hicks of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
2019: Daniel Stumpf of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2020: The Dodgers win Game 5 of the World Series, 4 - 2, to take a three games to two lead, by taking advantage of Rays starter Tyler Glasnow's early struggles. They score three runs over the first two innings to take a lead they will never relinquish. The key moment occurs in the 4th, when Manuel Margot is caught while attempting a straight steal of home that would have tied the game; the play is agonizingly close, but Margot is ruled out, ending the inning. Clayton Kershaw is the winner, while also setting a new record for most career strikeouts in the postseason, passing Justin Verlander.

Totally Tigers

Last week, we graded all of the Tigers who saw action during the 2023 season. It was followed up by asking fans to evaluate A. J. Hinch and his coaching staff.

Today, we?ll conclude the grading process by asking fans to offer their feedback on the Tigers? PoBO, Scott Harris.

Scott has just concluded his first year at the helm of the Tigers. It was expected that he would spend this year evaluating roster talent before making any really big changes to it.

Harris did broom a number of departments including player personnel, scouting and drafting. He also expanded a number of departments and added significant personnel. At the end of the year, he hired a new GM, Jeff Greenberg.

Scott added 9 new players to the MLB roster and multiple others to the minor leagues via trades, free agent signings, Rule 5 and waiver wire finds.

In all, 9 players were added to the Tigers? MLB roster with 6 of them earning accolades and 3 of them faltering. One of those earned a place in the Rookie of the Year discussion and another became a Gold Glove finalist.

A third was named to the All-Star roster and ended up being flipped for another team?s #5 prospect. Two others had some of the team?s best slash lines and put up positive defensive numbers.

The 2023 season also saw the emergence of several young pitchers who have the potential to be solid starting pitchers in the near future.

On the other side of the coin, Harris did not sign any top free agents which could have been due to the need to evaluate the roster more before committing so much money and multiple years to a new contract.

Filling third base remained a problem throughout the year and the issues at 2B are only partially resolved.

In all, the Tigers saw a jump in performance, winning 12 more games than last year (and losing 12 less) and finishing in 2nd place. Yet, they finished 6 games under .500. In the previous year under former GM Al Avila, the Tigers finished in 4th place, 30 games under .500.
So how would you grade Scott Harris after his first year with the team?

What grade would you give Scott Harris after his first year on the job?

1. High marks.

2. Decent marks.

3. Mixed reviews.

4. Disappointing marks.

VOTE

Tigers first base coach Alfredo Am?zaga, others in organization won?t return in 2024.

The Tigers hired Chip Lawrence, who finished runner-up to Mark Conner for the scouting director job in October 2022, as a special assistant to scouting and global crosschecker.

The Tigers organization for the first time in a long time, maybe ever, is robust with talent in their scouting and development staff.

October 26 in Tigers and mlb history:

1887: The Detroit Wolverines lose the 15th and final game of the World Series to the St. Louis Browns, but win the series 10 games to 5. Sam Thompson leads all hitters with a .362 average.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CvolDkmWYAAvyEB.jpg

1911: Danny Murphy of the Philadelphia Athletics has four hits as the A's beat the New York Giants, 13 - 2, to win the World Series in six games. Philadelphia puts the game out of reach with a seven-run 7th inning.

1934: The Boston Red Sox acquire shortstop Joe Cronin from the Washington Senators for his counterpart Lyn Lary and an estimated $250,000. Cronin will hit .295 with 95 RBI in 1935, the first of his 11 seasons as a Boston player.

1940: Detroit Tigers outfielder Hank Greenberg is named the American League MVP with Cleveland Indians pitcher Bob Feller finishing second. Greenberg hit .340 with 41 home runs and 150 RBI, while Feller posted a 27-11 record with a 2.61 ERA.
Having won the award in 1935 as a first baseman, Greenberg becomes the first player to win the MVP again playing a different position.

1950: The Baseball Writers Association of America selects New York Yankees shortstop Phil Rizzuto as the American League MVP. He posted a .324 batting average with 200 hits and 125 runs, but drove in just 66 runs. Rizzuto, who receives 16 of 23 first-place votes, easily outpoints runner-ups Billy Goodman of the Boston Red Sox and teammate Yogi Berra.

1950: Walter O'Malley succeeds Branch Rickey as president of the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1959: The Detroit Tigers released Gus Zernial.

1960 - After operating the team in the nation's capital ever since Clark Griffith took over as manager of the club in 1912, Calvin Griffith, president of the Washington Senators, makes the decision to move his club to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. In a move designed to get a jump on the National League in the expansion race, the American League announces that it will expand by two teams and approves the move of the Senators. The new AL teams will play in Los Angeles and in Washington, DC, as all teams will play a 162-game schedule, with 18 games against each opponent.

1962: Tigers are welcomed in Tokyo at the outset of a 17-game goodwill tour of Japan.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CvoliEjWcAAX5hz.jpg

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DMW3jV-X...pg&name=medium
In the National League, Ferguson Jenkins of the Chicago Cubs receives the honor.

1977: Sparky Lyle of the New York Yankees becomes the first American League reliever to win the Cy Young Award. Lyle led the league with 72 appearances, posting a 13-5 record with 26 saves and a 2.17 ERA.

1979: Commissioner Bowie Kuhn notifies Hall of Famer Willie Mays that if he accepts a position with the Bally Manufacturing Corporation, owner of several gambling casinos, he must disassociate himself from major league baseball. Mays, a part-time coach and goodwill ambassador for the Mets, will relinquish his duties upon accepting Bally's job offer.

1982: Former Tiger Harvey Kuenn returns to Brewers as manager after leading them to the World Series.

1982: Steve Carlton of the Philadelphia Phillies becomes the first pitcher to win four Cy Young Awards, taking National League honors. The 37-year-old lefthander, who led the National League in wins (23), innings pitched (295.2), strikeouts (286) and shutouts (6), was a previous winner in 1972, 1977 and 1980.

1984: Willie Hernandez named Tiger of the Year by the BWAA Detroit chapter.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CvjGHt0WEAEh_D_.jpg

1985: The Kansas City Royals beat the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 6 of the World Series, thanks in part to a controversial 9th-inning call by Don Denkinger. The umpire rules the Royals' Jorge Orta safe at first base, when replays show he was out. The Royals will go on to score two runs to win, 2 - 1, forcing a seventh game.

1991: Outfielder Kirby Puckett prevents two Atlanta runs with a leaping catch in the 3rd inning and then lofts a sacrifice fly in the 5th to give the Twins the lead in Game 6 of the World Series. The Braves tie it in the 7th, but Puckett turns out the lights in the 10th with a home run to force a seventh game.

1992: Les Lancaster of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1996: The New York Yankees clinch their 23rd World Series by defeating the Atlanta Braves, 3 - 2, in Game 6. Joe Girardi's RBI triple keys a three-run rally against Greg Maddux. John Wetteland is named Series MVP after posting his fourth save.

1997: Edgar Renteria ends one of the most thrilling Game 7 in World Series history, singling with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Florida Marlins their first World championship with a 3 - 2 victory over the Cleveland Indians. The five-year-old Marlins become the youngest expansion team to win the Fall Classic. Pitcher Livan Hernandez wins the Series MVP award. Following the 2010 season, a panel of experts at the MLB Network will vote this game the 13th greatest game of the past fifty years.

1998: Potential free agent All-Star catcher Mike Piazza signs the most lucrative contract in major league history when he agrees to terms with the New York Mets. The seven-year deal is worth over $91 million and includes having a suite on road trips and a luxury box for home games at Shea Stadium.

2000: In Game 5 at Shea Stadium, the Yankees win their third consecutive World Series, their fourth title in five years, and record their 26th World championship, by defeating the Mets, 4 - 2. Luis Sojo's 9th-inning two-out, tie-breaking single off starter Al Leiter is the decisive hit. Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter becomes the first player to win the All-Star Game MVP and the Series MVP honors in the same season. Joe Torre becomes only the fifth manager to win four World Series championships, joining Hall of Famers Joe McCarthy (7), Casey Stengel (7), Connie Mack (5) and Walter Alston (4) .

2004: In Game 3 of the World Series at Busch Stadium, Manny Ramirez hits a two-run home run as the Boston Red Sox defeat the St. Louis Cardinals, 4 - 1, for their third consecutive victory. Pedro Martinez is the winning pitcher, helped by relievers Mike Timlin and Keith Foulke as Jeff Suppan is the loser.
Prior to Game 3 of the World Series, Edgar Martinez receives the Roberto Clemente Award, an honor given to the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team. A native of Puerto Rico, the Mariners designated hitter, like the award's namesake, is involved in a number of charitable causes.

2005: In the World Series, the Chicago White Sox complete a sweep of the Houston Astros with a 1 - 0 victory in Game 4. Freddy Garcia pitches seven solid shutout innings. Series MVP Jermaine Dye connects for an RBI single off Brad Lidge in the 8th for the only run of the game, as Juan Uribe adds strong defensive support at shortstop. Garcia becomes the first Venezuelan starter to win a World Series game. He also accomplishes the feat with good friend and fellow countryman Ozzie Guillen at the helm, who manages the White Sox to earn the franchise's first World Championship since 1917.

2006: Tigers take 3-0 lead on Ivan Rodriguez's RBI single but David Eckstein's second RBI double gives the Cardinals a 5-4 win in Game 4 of the World Series.

2008: The Phillies top the Rays, 10 - 2, in Game 4 of the 2008 World Series to take a 3 games to 1 lead. Joe Blanton homers, the first pitcher to go deep in a World Series game since Ken Holtzman in 1974.

2018: The Dodgers win a marathon Game 3 in the World Series, 3 - 2 over the Red Sox, on a walk-off homer by Max Muncy off Nathan Eovaldi to lead off the 18th inning. The game lasts 7 hour and 20 minutes and begins with a great start by Walker Buehler, who shuts out the Sox for 7 innings. But Los Angeles can only score one run on a solo homer by Joc Pederson in the 3rd, and in the 8th Boston ties the score on a two-out homer by Jackie Bradley off Kenley Jansen. The two teams trade runs in the 13th when the Dodgers manage to score on a two-out error by 2B Ian Kinsler. The score remains at 2 - 2 until Muncy ends the game as Eovaldi begins his 7th inning of work. The game's total time and the 18 pitchers used are both postseason records.

2019: Major League Baseball honors the best relief pitchers in the game before Game 4 of the World Series. Aroldis Chapman wins the Mariano Rivera Award for the first time, while Josh Hader is a repeat winner of the Trevor Hoffman Award.

2021: Shohei Ohtani is presented with the Commissioner's Historic Achievement Award by Commissioner Rob Manfred in recognition of his recently completed season as a two-way player. The rare award had not been given out since 2015, by Manfred's predecessor, Bud Selig, and is only presented to recognize accomplishments of a great historical significance.

A DECADE TOO LATE.
Totally Tigers

During this time of year when October baseball is being played, we can?t help but reminisce about some of the unresolved issues we had with the Tigers during those 2006 ? 2016 years. For some of us, trying to wrap our minds around how it all turned out the way it did.

Especially when we?re constantly reading stories about a disproportionate number of former Tigers who are once again in the thick of it. And winning those rings.

For me recently, it?s been the multiple stories all praising Max Scherzer during the playoffs and how he?s stepped up. It appears that those reporters are not familiar with what happened during the 2013 playoffs.

Once I stopped retching over the stories, I had to revisit some memories and wonder ?what if??
