2013: For the second time in the series, Boston uses a late-game grand slam to defeat the Tigers in the ALCS.
Shane Victorino's 7th-inning blast over the Green Monster off Jose Veras is key to a 5 - 2 win that sends the Red Sox to the World Series. Koji Uehara picks up his third save in addition to a win to receive the series' MVP honors.

2017: The Dodgers are headed to the World Series for the first time since 1988 with an 11 - 1 win over the Cubs in Game 5 of the NLCS. They chase Jose Quintana in the 3rd inning, before Kiki Hernandez delivers the killer blow with a grand slam against Hector Rondon, his second homer of the game, which extends the lead to 7 - 0. Hernandez adds a third homer in the 9th to complete a great day. Chicago scores its only run on a solo homer by Kris Bryant off Clayton Kershaw, who picks up the win with 6 strong innings. Justin Turner and Chris Taylor share the NLCS MVP Award.

2022: Game 2 of the NLCS features two big innings, a four-run 2nd by the Phillies against Blake Snell that features some poor defensive play by the Padres, and after a pair of solo homers by Brandon Drury and Josh Bell to halve the deficit, a five-run outburst against Aaron Nola and Brad Hand in the 5th that puts San Diego ahead to stay on its way to an 8 - 5 win. The second big inning features a big hit by Austin Nola against his younger brother Aaron, as it is the first time one brother has batted against another in a postseason game.

2022: The Astros win Game 1 of the ALCS, 4 - 2 over the Yankees, behind the pitching of Justin Verlander who strikes out 11 while giving up just one run in six innings. Five of the six runs in the game come via solo homers - three by Houston - while their four pitchers rack up 17 Ks. Clarke Schmidt, who gives up homers to Yuli Gurriel and Chas McCormick in the 6th, is charged with the loss.

FINAL GRADES.
Totally Tigers

As we continue our year in review, let?s now grade each individual player from this year?s roster.

But in order to do so, we need to identify the grading parameters first.

Tiger fans now have to understand that this team has evolved into a modern one. We need to say goodbye to the old standards we saw for decades ? guys who could mash but couldn?t run or field. We now need to look at the complete player and how many tools he brings to the game.

Which also means that we need to look at stats as they are viewed today. No longer is batting average on its own an accurate indicator. The slash line is.

It is an indicator of a hitter?s entire offensive skill level ? the ability to hit, the ability to hit for power and the ability to consistently get on base. And the relationship between all 3 (or 4) stats also tells us how elite of a hitter he is or whether his strength lies in 1-2 areas.

And a player?s defensive runs saved (DRS) has to be incorporated into his analysis. He can create runs for the team ? but he can also give away runs with his fielding. Some of the best hitters on this team like Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson are defensively weak and they give up lots of runs to their opponents.

For a pitcher, the win-loss record is no longer considered to be an accurate measure of his skill. Especially for this team that rarely supported their hurlers by their inability to give them the runs they needed to win.

What we really want to look at is the ERA and especially the WHIP (walks+hits per inning pitched) which shows how many runners a pitcher puts on base. It is the true measure of his effectiveness.

And finally, it?s not fair to judge players who didn?t have a lot of playing time. There are a number of them you won?t see here for that reason.

Injuries are taken into account and the final assessment of each player also includes how they compare to their teammates, not to the rest of MLB.

So here are the final grades of qualified Tigers for the 2023 season. Players are listed alphabetically.....

Ty Cobb in a Case Racer.
According to the late racing historian Don Radbruch, this photo is of Baseball Hall of Famer Ty Cobb at the wheel of a Case race car, circa 1911. Radbruch also reported that Cobb (1886 - 1961) was a friend of 1925 International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) Champion Fred Horey, who rode as riding mechanic for Joe Nikrent in the 1913 Indianapolis 500. An article elsewhere on First Super Speedway reported that Cobb was contracted by the Chalmers-Detroit Company to race a Chalmers-Detroit "30" in competition in October 1909.

Zach McKinstry is a Gold Glove award nominee.
The veteran utilityman didn?t do much at the plate after a hot start, but he continued to excel anywhere AJ Hinch played him defensively.

October 20 in Tigers and mlb history:

1900: The St. Louis Cardinals withhold the final month's pay of all but five players, including John McGraw and Wilbert Robinson, citing late hours, dissipation, and gambling as reasons for the poor showing of the team, which finished tied for fifth place in the National League.

1901: Seven St. Louis Cardinals, including half the pitching staff and the three top hitters - Jesse Burkett, Emmet Heidrick and Bobby Wallace - jump to the new St. Louis Browns American League team.

1909: Ty Cobb surrenders to police in Cleveland on charges stemming from a felony assault earlier in the year. Accompanied by Tiger owner Frank Navin, Cobb enters a not guilty plea and pays a bond for release. Cobb would later plea guilty to a lesser charge and pay a fine. In August he?s assaulted a black man outside a Cleveland hotel.

1910: On one day of rest, Jack Coombs of the Philadelphia Athletics pitches a complete game to beat the Chicago Cubs, 12 - 5, and give the Athletics a 3-0 lead in the World Series. Coombs also collects three hits and three RBI in the game.

1910: The New York Giants win the City Series against the Highlanders in the sixth game, as Christy Mathewson is victorious over Jack Warhop, 6 - 3. Larry Doyle's 3rd-inning three-run home run is the big blow.

1924: Kansas City Monarchs manager Jose Mendez takes the mound to spin a three-hit, 5 - 0 shutout over Hilldale to win the tenth and final game of the first Negro League World Series. Loser Nip Winters had pitched the first three Hilldale wins.

1931: The legendary Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle was born this day in Spavinaw, OK.

1935: Hank Greenberg is named American League MVP. Wes Ferrell finishes second in the ballot. Another great year for "Hammerin Hank", as he leads the league in Homeruns 36, RBI with 170, and total bases with 389. Hank is also among the league leading top 3/5/10 in every offensive category.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DMlTkqQX4AIhCh_.jpg

1936: In a pitchers' duel, Carl Hubbell (26-6) edges out Dizzy Dean (24-13) for MVP honors in the National League.

1937: Happy Birthday to Hall of Famer Juan Marichal, born this day in Monte Cristi Province, Dominican Republic.

1947: Radio rights for the World Series sell for $475,000 for three years. Every franchise but Pittsburgh has sold 1948 TV rights. The New York Giants get $400,000 for radio-TV rights from Chesterfield.

1951: Joe DiMaggio accompanies Lefty O'Doul's All-Stars on a tour of Japan. They will win 13 of the 15 games played.

1955: Masaichi Kaneda of the Kokutetsu Swallows strikes out his 350th batter, surpassing the MLB season record of 348, set by Bob Feller in 1948. Kaneda already holds the single-game strikeout record in Japan with 15 in 1952 and 1954 and will go on to hold almost every Japanese pitching record before retiring in 1969.

1957: Bobby Layne's Detroit Lions win 31-27 after trailing 21-3 to Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts at Briggs (Tiger) Stadium. Layne throws two touchdown passes to Howard 'Hopalong" Cassady in the fourth quarter.

1960: Coach Ralph Houk is named to succeed Casey Stengel as manager of the New York Yankees. He briefly led the team during the season when Stengel was hospitalized.

1960: John Fetzer assumes the presidency of the Tigers after the resignation of Bill DeWitt. Fetzer will run the team until 1983.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DpkHlmTWwAAJHjJ.jpg

1964: Johnny Keane, three days after resigning as manager of the World Champions St. Louis Cardinals, replaces Yogi Berra as the Yankees' field boss.

1967: The Detroit Tigers released Jerry Lumpe.
1967: The Detroit Tigers released Johnny Podres.

1981: In a World Series rematch of the 1977 and 1978 teams, the Yankees take Game 1 over the Dodgers, 5 - 3. Bob Watson hits a three-run home run in the 1st inning as pitcher Ron Guidry goes seven innings for the win. Goose Gossage closes down a Dodgers rally in the 8th.

1982: The Milwaukee Brewers, playing in their first World Series, are unable to hold on to a 3 - 1 lead in Game 7, as the St. Louis Cardinals, thanks to Keith Hernandez's two-run 6th-inning single, rally to a 6 - 3 victory and the World Championship.
Bruce Sutter throws the final pitch as the St. Louis Cardinals win the World Series vs. the Milwaukee Brewers in seven games.

1988: Orel Hershiser pitches a four-hitter and Mickey Hatcher and Mike Davis hit two-run home runs to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5 - 2 victory over the Oakland Athletics and the World Series title in five games.
Hershiser becomes only the third player to win the MVP honors in both the League Championship Series and the World Series. The win gives the Dodgers their first World Championship since 1981, becoming the only team to win more than one World Series in the 1980s.

1990: The Cincinnati Reds complete one of the biggest upsets in major league history, beating the heavily-favored Oakland Athletics, 2 - 1, to win the World Series in four games. Pitcher Jose Rijo, with 9th-inning help from Randy Myers, wins his second game of the series.

1994: Tim Belcher of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
1994: Eric Davis of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1999: Boston eye doctor Carmen Puliafito offers free surgery for Major League umpires during the postseason after umpires blow three calls against the Red Sox during the ALCS.
Puliafito, who chairs the ophthalmology department at the Tufts University School of Medicine, suspects some umpires are secretly nearsighted. "That's the only explanation I have for these three horrible calls."

2000: Major league play-by-play broadcasters and black commentators select Carlos Delgado and Todd Helton as the Hank Aaron Award recipients. The new award, established last year, recognizes the Toronto Blue Jays and Colorado Rockies first basemen as the best overall hitters in each league. The same day, Toronto signs Delgado to a record four-year $68 million contract. Delgado's average salary of $17 million is the most in major league history.

2004: The Boston Red Sox become the first team in major league history to win a best-of-seven series after losing the first three games, by beating New York at Yankee Stadium, 10 - 3, in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series.
Johnny Damon hits two home runs, including a grand slam in the 4th inning, backing up the solid pitching of Derek Lowe. Boston joins the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1975 New York Islanders, both of the National Hockey League, as the only teams in the history of North American professional sports to overcome a 3-0 series deficit to win a seven-game series.

2008: The Detroit Tigers released Angel Castro.

2017: Tigers introduce Ron Gardenhire as manager.
Ilitch, Gardenhire, and ClownShoesAvila.

2017: The Astros force a Game 7 in the ALCS by defeating the Yankees, 7 - 1, in Game 6. Justin Verlander has another great performance, with 7 scoreless innings, and Houston scores three times in the 5th against Luis Severino on a double by Brian McCann and a two-run single by Jose Altuve. Aaron Judge brings the Yankees close with a monster home run off Brad Peacock in the 8th, but Altuve leads off the bottom of the inning with a solo shot off David Robertson, starting a four-run inning that puts the game away.

2020: The Dodgers defeat the Rays, 8 - 3, in Game 1 of the World Series, in the first World Series game to be played at a neutral site, Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX. The Dodgers lead 2 - 1 through the middle of the 5th, thanks to a two-run homer by Cody Bellinger countered by a solo shot by Kevin Kiermaier, but they chase Tyler Glasnow with 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th, then add two more in the 6th, with Mookie Betts in the middle of things with a homer, two stolen bases, and two runs scored. Clayton Kershaw gives up just 1 run on 2 hits in 6 innings to pick up the win.

2021: The Astros win Game 5 of the ALCS, 8 - 1 over the Red Sox, to move to within one game of the World Series. The game is actually close for the first five innings, the only run being a solo homer by Yordan Alvarez off Chris Sale in the 2nd, but the Astros break through for five runs in the 6th, with 1B Kyle Schwarber committing a costly error, and never look back. Framber Valdez tosses eight innings to get credit for the win.

2021: The Braves take a three-games-to-one lead in the NLCS with a 9 - 2 win over the Dodgers in Game 4 at Dodger Stadium. The Braves hit three homers off Julio Urias in the first three innings and never look back from there. Eddie Rosario goes 4 for 5 with three runs, four RBIs, two homers and one triple to lead the attack.

2022: Houston wins Game 2 of the ALCS, 3 - 2 over the Yankees thanks to a three-run homer by Alex Bregman off Luis Severino in the 3rd. Framber Valdez and two relievers combine to end the Yankees' record streak of 23 postseason games with at least one home run, dating back to the 2019 Division Series.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

At one of his initial press conferences, Scott Harris said that the organization would take ?calculated risks? when signing players from outside the organization in order to get better. Players who technically fit the Tigers? needs and filled holes. He emphasized that you don?t move ahead unless you take certain risks.

He also indicated that a ?calculated risk? meant that there was evidence a player would ? on paper ? work out but that the organization recognized that there would be some who wouldn?t.

The theory worked extremely well for him when he was with the Giants and his ability to find treasure earned the Giants 107 wins in 2021.

Harris has only been with the Tigers for a year. For much of that time, he was editing a roster Al Avila had already assembled and this limited just how much he could change at one time.

In all, Scott acquired 9 players who saw more than a cup of coffee in Detroit (excluding the minor league acquisitions) this past season. Three of them ? Matthew Boyd, Nick Maton and Tyler Nevin ? did not work out.

But 5 (maybe 6) of them contributed positively to the team?s improvement this year. They are:

1928: Hall of Famer Whitey Ford was born this day in Astoria, New York, NY.

1934: An All-Star team led by Babe Ruth and Connie Mack sails on tour to Hawaii and Japan. Players with wives include Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Charlie Gehringer, Lefty G?mez, Earl Averill and Lefty O'Doul.

1935: Navin Field's name was changed to Briggs Stadium. Most Detroiters alive today, however, remember the ballpark better as Tiger Stadium.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DqDOBdrV4AA-V5n.jpg

1946: Detroit pitcher Hal Newhouser finishes second to Boston outfielder Ted Williams in voting for American Most Valuable Player. Newhouser won 26 games and led the league in ERA as he nearly wins the MVP Award for the third straight season.

1957: The New York Giants, who are moving to San Francisco in 1958, purchase the Class-A San Francisco Seals team and will convince the Pacific Coast League to accept Phoenix as a location for the Seals.

1957: The Washington Senators reject the initial overtures of Minneapolis, MN-St. Paul, MN cities to move the team there.

1959: The Players Association approves two All-Star Games in 1960, to be held at Kansas City's Municipal Stadium and New York's Yankee Stadium. The players would like to have them played within four days of each other.

1964: After just 11 years in Milwaukee, the Braves' Board of Directors votes to ask the National League for permission to move to Atlanta. Milwaukee County officials sue to block the move.

1975: Boston RedSox pinch-hitter Bernie Carbo belts a three-run HR in the 8th inning vs. Cincinnati Reds pitcher Rawly Eastwick to tie World Series Game 6 at Fenway Park.

1975: Carlton Fisk breaks up one of the best games in World Series history with a home run in the 12th inning to give the Boston Red Sox a 7 - 6 victory against the Cincinnati Reds, forcing a seventh game to decide the winner of the 1975 World Series.

1976: With a 7 - 2 victory, the Cincinnati Reds win the World Series, completing a four-game sweep of the Yankees. It is the Reds' second straight World Championship. Johnny Bench hits two home runs for five RBI. He finishes with a .533 batting average and is named Series MVP. Yankees catcher Thurman Munson has six straight singles to tie a World Series mark. Cincinnati also becomes the first team ever to go through an entire League Championship Series and World Series without a defeat.

1998: The New York Yankees close out their historic season with 3 - 0 victory against the San Diego Padres, sweeping San Diego in four games to win their record 24th World Series championship. Andy Pettitte gets the victory, and Scott Brosius is named Series MVP. The Game 4 victory gives the Yankees 125 wins against 50 losses for a .714 winning percentage, the best in the majors since their Murderers' Row club of 1927, as their American League record of 114 regular-season victories were the most ever for a major league champion team.

2006: Justin Verlander strikes out 8, but is outdueled by fellow rookie Anthony Reyes as the Cardinals take Game 1 of the World Series, 7-2.

2013: Two days after losing the 2013 ALCS, Tigers manager Jim Leyland announces he is retiring after a 22-year career as a big league skipper.
Leyland led the Tigers to 4 playoff appearances, 3 division titles, and 2 pennants in 8 seasons.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DpJkeiwWsAABtwS.jpg

2017: The Astros win Game 7 of the ALCS, 4 - 0, over the Yankees to clinch their-first ever American League pennant. Having also won one in the National League in 2005, they become the first team to have done so in both major leagues. In the game, the Astros get a great combined pitching performance by Charlie Morton, who goes the first five innings, and Lance McCullers, who pitches the last four, limiting the Yankees to just three hits. Evan Gattis and Jose Altuve hit solo homers and Brian McCann drives in two runs, as CC Sabathia is charged with the loss.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

So far, we?ve addressed the Detroit Tigers? yearly performance as a whole and then graded each member of the roster.

Now, it?s time to evaluate the manager and coaches. They work as a team so it?s impossible to simply evaluate A. J. Hinch. We have to look at the entire group.

For the first time in history, the Tigers have modernized their coaching staff. While certain coaching categories have multiple members, each one brings their own focus and specialty to their work.

Joining Hinch are:
George Lombard ? bench coach who also in charge of base running, positioning, relays and signs. He also coaches in the outfield.
Keith Beauregard, Michael Bdar, James Rowson ? hitting coaches.
Chris Fetter, Robin Lund, Juan Nieves ? pitching coaches incl. kinesiology.
Alfredo Amazago ? first base coach.
Gary Jones ? third base coach.
Tim Federowicz ? catching coach.
Six of these coaches are new this year. In addition, the Tigers hired 2 new training/conditioning and performance coaches. And 2 new athletic trainers.

Overall, the team improved their performance over last year, winning 12 more games and losing 12 less. They went from finishing 4th to 2nd in the AL Central. It was the best win-loss result since 2016.

In 2022, they had no winning months. This year, 2 of them. But in both years, they started each season very slowly.

The 2023 season saw an improvement in every offensive category except for strikeouts. The team slash line was also improved and they halved their negative run differential. However, they still sit near the bottom.

The players hit 55 more HRs, 100 more RBIs and doubled their stolen bases.

In past years, the Tigers have ranked #29 or #30 in offensive stats. They have moved up but remain in the lower third of MLB.

Their defense has also improved. They now have 5 position players who are defensively strong and saved the team runs.

Pitching has also gotten stronger with the team moving from the lower third to the middle.

The Tigers have a pitcher who is in the discussion for Rookie of the Year as well as a Gold Glove finalist.

But in the end, the team again finished under .500. Another year with more losses than wins.

Given that this was the first year under new PoBO Scott Harris, combined with the priority of undoing the damage created by former GM, Al Avila, what is realistic to expect regarding how fast this team turns things around?

Were you expecting lesser results? Something similar to this year?s final standings? Or were you pleasantly surprised by what happened?

Do you see this team being stuck or are you currently seeing progression of the young players and the formation of the core of this team?
How would you grade those in charge ? A. J. Hinch and his coaching staff?
