Detroit Tigers Team Notes

Not saying it is going to happen again, but to just let you know.
The Tigers have the exact same record after 136 games they had in 2009 - 75-61. In 2009, they were seven games up with 26 remaining. Right now they are six games up on the White Sox, and either 6 1-2 or six games up on the Indians, depending on the Indians' game Wednesday night against Oakland.
Minnesota caught the Tigers in 2009 by going 18-8 down the stretch compared to Detroit going 11-15.
Do I feel the Tigers are better prepared this year than 2009? For sure. But the series against the White Sox this weekend is going to be interesting, to say the least.

Detroit Tigers Team Notes

Tigers purchased the contract of LHP Luis Marte from Double-A Erie.
Marte, 24, earned a promotion to the big leagues by posting an impressive 1.70 ERA and 68/18 K/BB ratio over 53 innings with Double-A Erie this season. This includes a 1.17 ERA and 28 strikeouts over 23 innings in August. The righty reliever has often been asked to pitch multiple innings in the minors, so the young righthander could be a long man out of the bullpen for Jim Leyland.

Tigers recalled OF Andy Dirks from Triple-A Toledo.
Dirks was booted to the minors after Delmon Young was acquired last month, but we figured he wouldn't be gone for long. The 25-year-old rookie is batting .257/.301/.411 with six homers, 21 RBI and four stolen bases over 188 plate appearances with the Tigers this season. He is useful outfield depth to have around, especially in light of Brennan Boesch's thumb injury.

Tigers recalled 2B Will Rhymes from Triple-A Toledo.
Rhymes opened the year as the Tigers' starting second baseman, but is batting just .221/.321/.235 with a .556 OPS over 81 plate appearances in the big leagues this season. He'll provide some depth at second base down the stretch, but is unlikely to see significant playing time.

Tigers recalled RHP Jacob Turner from Triple-A Toledo.
As expected, he'll make the spot-start Thursday in a promising matchup against the Royals. Turner, 20, made his major league debut in late-July, giving up two runs over 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Angels. The Tigers plan to keep him around during the month of September in case they need an extra starter, but it's possible he could pitch in relief in order to stay fresh.

Tigers activated 2B Carlos Guillen from the 15-day disabled list.
Guillen went 5-for-11 (.455) with three doubles during his minor league rehab assignment. The veteran infielder has been sidelined since since mid-August with left wrist inflammation. He is batting .207/.247/.329 with two home runs and 11 RBI over 89 plate appearances with the Tigers this season and should see semi-regular playing time at second base moving forward.
