Dirks

Dirks was scratched last night with soreness, so it might still be a while before he comes back to the team.

What does he have, defense. That's what. If you have two guys who can't hit, why would you want the guy that is worse in the OF? The reason I posted the other stuff is because you said we need a RH bat, why? Just so we can say we have a RH bat? If he can't hit LHP what's the point of keeping him over Kelly? When the top 5 OF are AJ, DY, BB, Dirks and Berry -- Raburn won't ever see his name in the lineup card, I'm not sure why we keep him. Because he wouldn't start over the other 5, right?

Again, Raburn has shown in his past that he can hit MLB pitchers. Once Dirks comes back, no more OF defense is needed. If Raburn can find his swing he has value as a RH bat off the bench. Kelly has consistently shown that he is not a major league hitter. Raburn has more value than Kelly to the Tigers.

You might not need any defense but Kelly can also sub at 3rd and first if need be. Ramon cannot so he still has value, even if just a little.

I'm trying to figure out Raburn's value. In a perfect world, DY will DH and the OF will be BB, AJ and Dirks/Berry. Occasional DY might go to left. Everything is covered. Like I said before if Raburn can't hit LHP, why keep him? Because of some lightning in a bottle some of you are expecting?

I believe they're trying to tell you that Raburns slim possibility of catching that lightning in a bottle is of more value than Kelly's no hope swing and 1 inning a night defense. They're willing to sacrifice no potential and a semi "uneeded" defensive replacement for some slight potential with the stick.

Now that I think about it, lets say Miggy gets hurt and can't play the last 4 innings of a game. Can anyone play 3rd besides Kelly?

Santiago can play 3rd.

Anyone can play first.

Infante, Santiago, Peralta, and even...Raburn.

If Miggy owuld get hurt you would sub Ramon in for him and move Infante to 3rd wouldn't you? Infante is kind of a utility man himself.

Either way it's be interesting as Leyland loves him some Kelly and Raburn is a favorite of his too.

I get what your trying to say Mitch, I have always been somewhat of a Don Kelly supporter myself.

The fact that he can play all 8 defensive positions and 5 of them above average, always gave him a soft spot in my baseball heart.

But his value is being negated by the rest of the guys we have, the OF will be covered, the IF will be covered.

So what's left of Don Kelly is a LHB who can't hit on a team that has a lot of LHB's already, and is hurting for RHB's.

Thanks for trying your best Donny, but it's time to move on.

I know we differ but your last part "So what's left of Don Kelly is a LHB who can't hit on a team that has a lot of LHB's already, and is hurting for RHB's."

I assume you want a RHB that can hit lefties, correct? Well, Raburn can't. I'm not trying to be difficult but why would Ryan Raburn be in the lineup? Could you see him getting PT ahead of the other 5 OF?

Maybe we won't need Kelly but we certainly don't need Raburn.

That's the point I have been trying to get across Mitch.

Not that Raburn deserves to stay [or take a single AB vs. LHP] but that when push comes to shove he is the lesser of 2 evils.

If we had someone else I'd gladly replace Raburn with them, almost anyone....I'd love to replace Delmon too, but the fact remains however bad Raburn is, he still has that slight 1/100000000 of an advantage over Kelly, and that's that he is a RHB.

And in the end that's what it will come down to, barring a trade, which would not surprise me.

Its probably a moot point to be honest since its either or that will be released or traded when Dirks comes back and probably the other if/when the team makes a move for a right hand batting OF they are looking at now. I suspect both will be gone from the Tigers before the deadline.

Then Raburn has zero usefulness? Kelly is, just about worthless. I'd take just about worthless over zero usefulness.
