Dirks

Its probably a moot point to be honest since its either or that will be released or traded when Dirks comes back and probably the other if/when the team makes a move for a right hand batting OF they are looking at now. I suspect both will be gone from the Tigers before the deadline.

Well you said yesterday in a thread "rest assured" the Tigers will make another move.

But honestly, I won't be surprised if they do or don't, but I certainly don't see it as a "rest assured" fact.

The only players capable of making a big enough impact would require a pretty large deal, and I think after shipping off 2 top prospects, we might not be able to offer much.

there could still be a trade that involves major league players on the Tigers roster that are cheap and under team control. For instance.....a trade that involves players like Porcello and Berry for a good rental player.

I like Berry, probably more than most but I can't imagine he has any trade value.

Raburn still has more home runs in the first five spring training games then he does in 98 MLB games this year

Berry probably has value as a CF'er to many teams.

His only real value really, since he is not going to produce like a corner OF would.

I would not mind moving either Berry, Boesch, Dirks, or all 3 of them for a decent corner OF'er that bats righty.

I kinds figured they were rushing dirks back so he would be off the DL by the deadline so they could trade him, though this was before we dealt Turner and Brantley.

Just my two cents....many gave up on Adam Dunn before this year. Just trying to make a correlation here. Raburn is having an "off" year, or....is he?

Mitch...you want to point to this year with Raburn. Good. But the sample size just isn't there. I am with MI_Thumb on this. Neither Raburn or Kelly should have a spot on a "good" team, that also includes Santiago. I am also not a huge fan of Young, who should only DH against LHP. We know Young CANNOT play defense and his offense, what little there is, is tied to his frequency of seeing LHP or soft tossing righties.

We do not have a Johnny Grubb, Champ Summers or John Wockenfuss. Players who could take a walk, hit for power and not embarrass themselves in the field. They could start occasionally, and be a threat as a pinch hitter late in the game.

Not including Dirks, DET has Laird, Santiago, Raburn and Kelly on the bench most nights. Who of these 4 can take a walk on a consistent basis or be a threat to get a pinch-hit HR? Add Dirks, then the bench is probably Laird, Santiago, Berry and Kelly/Raburn. Again, there isn't much change. The only thing I know, is in the recent past, maybe not so far this year, Raburn can get you a late inning bomb.

I do not consider Boesch, Dirks, D. Young or Berry as acceptable long term corner OFer. Anyone can DH from time to time. But, they are what we have. And if we have them, then the debate is to keep either Kelly or Raburn. I would choose Raburn. And as pointed out, it really is the lesser of two evils.

DUNN is still batting horribly but has more power numbers. I get he's having a better year but there wasn't any where to go but up.

I get what you say about Raburn but why keep a guy on a team trying to get into the playoffs because he might rebound in 2013? He's not a young kid anymore. He's past his prime. Will he bat better next season, probably -- he can't be any worse. But why have him on the team in 2013?

I expect DY to be gone, Dirks to get a shot at being a starter, BB either getting a shot or AAA him, depending on how he finishes this season, AJ in CF and a new OF. Berry, I don't know. Not sure how Raburn makes the team in 2013, unless they're worried about his 2.3m contract. So why not dump him now?

Ramon goes back as a once a week sub. Kelly gone.

I understand what you say about the long team answers in OF but I doubt they can get rid of all those in one year.

I think if the biggest debate right now on this forum is Raburn vs. Kelly for the last roster spot, we must be doing pretty damn good right now.

It is a pretty useless argument I'll give you that. They both stink.

And this is why batting average is deceiving. He's still among the top 40, offensively, this season.

130 wRC+ (36th MLB)
.368 wOBA (34th MLB)

Interestingly enough, 60% of his PAs this season have resulted in either a HR, BB, or K.

I'm not sure I'd consider top 40 earth shattering.

I wasn't implying that he was...I'm simply saying he's been well above league average this season, offensively.

By comparison, Prince Fielder this year has

.373 wOBA
135 wRC+

Depends on what you look for. Would you take an AJ this season, gets hits more frequent, OBP or Dunn's power numbers. Might not be a fair comparison but I bet AJ has more effect on Detroit winning than Dunn has on Chicago.

As far as Prince goes, I'd wait until year 2 in the AL to make a judgement.

Well, AJ has been better in those two stats (.393 wOBA, 148 wRC+) this season and he's had much more defensive value than Dunn.

I would clearly take AJ over Dunn, regardless of who I root for.

Looks like Dirks has been activated from the DL and is in the lineup tonight. Boesch is DHing and Dirks is starting in right. No Delmon tonight. And DON FREAKIN' KELLY has been DFAed. Celebrate good times come on!

I hope someone put in a waiver claim on Delmon....

Lots of lefties in tonight's lineup, only Ajax, Cabrera, and Inante hitting righty.
