Free Agent Targets

Same. Always willing to entertain offers, you can always say no, and you might be surprised at what the right one could be.

But never say player X is totally off the table for trade talks, never.

GM's have players they won't give up. Maybe you would, but its not your call.

And yet all 3 are still here after most considered two of them had no shot at the 2013 team.

Tells me he knows a lot about the Tigers, insofar as they are very hesitant to cut dead weight.

I think these three players were retained by default not out of hesitation to release them. Kelly was released twice and returned like a bad penny. Dirks had a decent 2012. Coke's 2012 post-season was a deciding factor in keeping him in 2013. Tigers let Boesch, Young, Valverde (eventually), Berry (ill-advised), Laird (perhaps ill-advised), Schlereth and others go after 2012. And another season has passed with management turnover. Kelly, Dirks and Coke better be gone or I'll have to agree with your opinion, and compliment your prescience.

Wait. Letting Berry go was i'll-advised?

There has never been a bigger waste of roster space than a guy who can do nothing at all at a major league level but run bases.

You seriously wanted Quintin Berry on our roster?

Not to bat second like last season, but to be the guy who can steal a base when we needed it. Since no other team that we know of found him useful in that capacity ... oh, wait.

He could have been stashed in the ML until September and bought up for the post-season to replace Kelly for certain, even though he was an invaluable cog in the Tigers' machine.

Yeah, he stole 1 base for Boston against us.

Damn, that one base really seems huge right about now....

Well, did the Tigers have a comparable player? What damage he did or did not do against the Tigers is not the point. And I'm not suggesting that they re-sign him. But the post-season needs specialists like that if possible.

No but you were abdicating keeping him on the 40-man roster just to stash until the playoffs. We had no shortage of speed if we needed it, maybe not a 100% base stealer, but it's not like we were in that situation often where we would want to pull a guy who got on base so a 1 trick player can pinch run, then that runner get replaced the next half-inning.

QB does possess a very nice skill, but I don't think it's valuable enough to keep him around just for that.

Acknowledged. But I can think of when Perez pinch ran and looked less mobile than the Titanic moored at Southampton.

I wouldn't trade Miggy for anything, him and Verlander need to retire Tigers. Scherzer however, I could part with for a big haul. I suggested A Pirates trade Scherzer for McCutchen and their 2b Neil OR Grilli. Or both...lol. I would take that I think.

McCutchen has a helluva lot more trade value than Scherzer.

OMG -yes, provided that Andrew, who became fully vested at the end of 2013, doesn't have a no trade clause in his new contract.

But what a bargain he is. He only earned around 4M in 2013 and will only earn around 7M in 2014.

His current trade value is extremely high, considering that peanuts contract he signed. I'll bet his agent Steve Hammonds' telephone has been quiet. Not many ballplayers want Steve representing them.

Call Jay Z .... now!:lmao:

It's much simpler than contract. McCutchen is an everyday player who has been top 5 at his position in all of baseball for the last 3 years. Scherzer has not been, and he plays in 20% of our games only. McCutchens team value is exponentially more than any pitcher.

If it were that simple I would give up Scherzer PLUS whatever, to get McCutchen. But Pittsburgh would likely also want Smyly and Castellanos in the deal, and I still might do it.

Scherzer is the best player in the trade, starting pitching dominates the MLB.

Not that WAR is the be all, end all. But if you look at it from that perspective, McCutchen is a better player than Scherzer is. (8.2/6.4 last year) No way Pittsburgh takes that trade even up, much less with them adding other pieces.

They need to add some more power to our lineup too, I'd be down with bringing Granderson back.

JP Morosi on twitter: "Sources: Mutual interest has developed already between Tigers and free agent closer Joe Nathan. Nathan has Detroit high on his wish list."

Tigers interested in FA reliever Brian Wilson, sources tell Ken Rosenthal.
Would like Wilson or Nathan.

At soon to be 39, I do not want Nathan. If I did, I would want him real cheap. Same with Brian Wilson. He needs a better recent health record to invest top dollar in him.

Doesn't seem to be a real good overall FA group, yet it looks like the players are going to get more $$ and years than a GM wants.
