Game 12: Bears @ Lions *Thanksgiving* Thread

Besides the Cowboys...what other pro sports franchise does it?

Maybe some NBA team or teams on Christmas?

I don?t follow NBA.

The NBA schedules several games to play on each xmas day, but with different teams involved, apparently. This year will be 5 games, 10 teams.

Christmas last year

Christmas this year

Only Golden State hosted or will host both seasons in a row; I went back and checked the year before and Golden State also hosted that year.

So maybe that?s a thing.

I?m sure if that?s the case, their record is better than the Lions.

The Lions? big first quarter pushed them to 92 points in the first frame for the season. Sounds like a lot, right? That?s because it is. In fact, it?s the second most points in the league. Which helps explain how they?ve led in every game this season, including this one. And yet they?re just 3-8-1 for the season.
That?s kind of remarkable, and really speaks to just how bad this defense is.
It has been handed an early lead every week, and they?ve still lost twice as much as they?ve won.

Darius Slay has been fine this season. He?s been among Detroit?s lone bright spots on defense, even if he hasn?t performed at his usual Pro Bowl-caliber level. He?s been fine. But against Chicago, he was back to his old form, including picking off Mitchell Trubisky in the third quarter. It was his second pick of the season, giving him six straight seasons with multiple picks. The last Lions player to do that was Hall of Famer Lem Barney from 1967-77. The play also marked his 100th pass defense in 99 career games. He is just the ninth player in NFL history with 100 PDs in 100 games.

The Lions have now started three quarterbacks this season. For Kenny Golladay, it hasn?t mattered. He posted the first 1,000-yard season of his career last year, and has continued to roll this season. Against the Bears, he shook Prince Amukamara with a double-move and then walked into the end zone for that 75-yard touchdown. But he wasn?t done. He racked up 138 receiving yards and one touchdown in the first half, joining guys named
Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams as the only Lions players to have done that kind of first-half damage since 1991. He finished with four catches for 158 yards overall, continuing to cement his place as one of the league?s best WR1s.

Marvin Jones added three catches for 40 yards and one touchdown. That pushes him across the 5,000-yard mark for his career. He joins Mike Evans, Julio Jones and A.J. Green as the only active players with at least 5,000 receiving yards and 40 touchdowns while averaging at least 14.5 yards per catch.

As far as the games on Thanksgiving go no other teams (owner) want to it. Who wants to play Sunday and then a Thursday? I doubt players want to do it. Its the same as was back in '34 when no other team came forward so Detroit stepped up.

WTF is HC Garrett clapping about?

His Boys just gave up their drive on downs, losing by 19 late, but maybe he is happy no TO on fumble...lolz.

FOUR DOWNS: How Blough fared in NFL debut.
Lions.com

Golladay averaged 39.5 yards per reception Thursday and finished with 158 yards on four catches. He had that 75-yard touchdown and accounted for all three of Detroit?s most explosive plays on offense against the Bears, adding a 36 and 29-yard reception in the contest. All four of Golladay?s catches Thursday went for 20 yards or more.

He now has 45 receptions on the year for 950 yards for a 20.2 average per reception.

Golladay is the first NFL player since Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss (1998) to record at least 40 receptions and nine touchdowns while maintaining a receiving average of 20.0 yards-or-more through 12 games.
The only other Lions player to do so was Cloyce Box in 1950.

"Hockenson, the eighth pick in April's NFL draft, opened the season with a six-catch, 131-yard, one-touchdown performance in a 27-27 tie against the Arizona Cardinals. In the 11 games since, he has 26 catches for 236 yards and one touchdown."

Was hoping that TJ was going to exceed a rook TE expectations, but nope, he has managed to badly underperform them, esp considering being #8 in the draft.

One of their other big TE expectations in vet Jesse James, who was signed as a FA, has all of 9 catches for 71 yds and 0 TDs.

Good job Quinn and Patricia!!

You don't take a TE top 10. Not once and certainly not twice. And 3 TE in the top 20 is the stupidest thing you can do.

This is one of the main reasons I want Quinn fired at the end of the year. I don't want him doing another draft or free agency. He has been terrible.

Barry Sanders joined the broadcast crew early in the game, they of course asked him why he quit while still in his prime, which Barry answered without actually saying why, as usual...lolz.

Then they mentioned the Lions never having a decent run game since he left, but Sanders again refused to take the bait, and diss his former ballclub.

When "Alias Smith & Jones" make the Lions top 5, yanno that their GMs have sucked, plus more than a little snakebit on high draft picks for RBs who got injured quickly, early, and often...Best, Leshoure, and now Johnson come to mind.

Don't forget Kevin Jones.

Don't forget Kevin Jones.

I didn't, the "Alias" inferred the two Kevins that the Lions had @ RB.

Since Barry Sanders retired 20 years ago?
  • The Lions have finished the year with more rushing yards than their opponents only twice (2013 and 2014).
  • The Lions have finished dead last in the NFL in rushing yards four separate times (2003, 2006, 2015, 2017).
  • Detroit?s run game hasn?t ranked in the top half of the league at the end of the season a single time.

Snacks didn’t play today and nobody noticed. That’s how much of a factor he’s been this year

Biggest disappointments this year in no particular order

Patrica, Quinn, snacks, Tight ends, pass rush, offensive line

I can put an order to that...

1. Dline. Pathetic. Lowest rated in the NFL.
2. Patricia. Proven he is not a good in game coach. Seems to be one of those guys that thinks his system is better than the players he has running it. Makes no adjustments.
3. Tight Ends. It?s only partly their fault.....as the play calling is certainly tailored to MJJ and KG.....which is hard to argue with. But James was signed and now he?s used less than Bawden .. and Hock has potential, but has been wildly inconsistent. So in summary......a highly paid FA and the #8 overall pick have fewer combined catches than Hunter Renfroe
4. Snacks. Most of the time I don?t notice he?s out there.
5. Quinn. Some good......but a lot of bad. Hockenson at #8......James.....Diggs.....Flowers (who is starting to look good) extending Jones......not addressing DE. Still so many holes to address 3 years in.
6. Oline. I expected them to suck.....so I?m not really disappointed in them.

IIRC, back during the depths of Lions losing teams under Millen, the NFL was considering taking away their traditional Turkey Day game, but the Fords somehow talked them out of it, maybe the Big 3 combined to threaten greatly reducing their advertising budgets for NFL games, or something similar.

Anyway, eventually the NFL added Thursday night games for nearly every week in the regular season...and no matter if the players like it or not.
