GRADING THE TIGERS: SECONDARY OUTFIELDERS.
Totally Tigers

Days of Roar Tigers Podcast: Dan Dickerson breaks down all things Detroit Tigers, shares his offseason expectations. 82 minutes.

A star-studded episode begins with Dan Dickerson — the radio voice of the Detroit Tigers — joining Evan Petzold and Mark Gorosh to break down the 2024 season. Dickerson discusses A.J. Hinch's genius, Tarik Skubal's Cy Young campaign, Spencer Torkelson's continued struggles and many more topics about the Tigers. He also shares insight into his broadcasting career after celebrating his 25th anniversary on the job, and he even provides his offseason expectations for the Tigers ahead of the 2025 season.
Geoff Pontes, prospect writer for Baseball America, joins the show, too. Pontes evaluates Tigers prospects Josue Briceño, Thayron Liranzo and Rayner Castillo in the Arizona Fall League, sharing his projected MLB debuts for Briceño and Liranzo.
Aside from guests, Evan and Mark debate about Torkelson, Casey Mize and the chances of reuniting with Jack Flaherty in free agency.

GRADING THE TIGERS: UTILITY PLAYERS.
Totally Tigers

Now that the season – and the playoffs – are over, this is the perfect time to reflect upon the 2024 year and grade players, management and Front Office. We’re going to divide the roster down by position in order to foster careful reflection and comments. Every day you’ll be asked to evaluate a small group of Tigers.
In most of the forthcoming blogs, there will be multiple opportunities to vote so please cast a vote for every poll you see on this page.
You will not be asked to grade players who have been traded or those with a very small sample size. We are also not offering a letter grade of E for the reason that anyone playing that poorly would have been released or sent down to the minors.
As you consider each player, we ask that you look at their entire skill set, not just hitting. Consider defense, speed, the ability to call a game and clutch ability.
Consider that the slash line is a more valuable indicator instead of just batting average and that a player’s role and position in the lineup are also factors. That defensive range and defensive runs saved (DRS) are a better gauge than fielding percentage. And that ERA and WHIP tell more about a pitcher than wins and losses.

Today, let’s give the roster an overall grade. There are several ways to go about this.
You can average out all of the individual grades you assigned players in the previous polls. Or you can look at where the team ranks within MLB for pitching, relieving, defense and offense. Or you can compare this roster with the 2023 one and assign a grade based upon the level of improvement you’ve seen.
However you grade, remember that the focus is on the players only, not the manager, coaches or Front Office. After voting, you may leave your rationale in the comment section. Three sentences only please.

George Lombard – bench
Keith Beauregard, Michael Brdar, Lance Zawadzki – hitting
Chris Fetter, Robin Lund, Juan Nieves – pitching
Anthony Iapoce – first base
Joey Cora – third base
Gary Jones – coach and dugout coordinator
Ryan Sienko – catching
Each coach has his own specialty. In addition to their specific jobs, they also coach players on defense, fundamentals, base running, positioning, etc.
They can only coach the talent they are given. Please grade them on how much, if any, players have improved in hitting, pitching, running and defense. After voting, you may leave your rationale in the comment section. Three sentences only please.

THE FANS HAVE SPOKEN.
Totally Tigers

The dust has settled on the Detroit Tigers’ season and those in the media who cover the team have put out their grades for most of the players.
But really, how unbiased are their evaluations? We know that there is a sensitivity when it comes to criticizing players. In the past, the team has been known to “punish” some who speak the unvarnished truth. And of course, these same reporters are dependent upon player access and giving bad grades is not conducive to forming positive relationships with those players.
So what is better?
Asking fans. Serious fans. Knowledgeable fans. Lots of fans.
Like those of you reading this blog right now.
Who better than you?
Why work with 1 person’s opinion when you can have hundreds weighing in who have no ties to the organization and aren’t dependent upon others for their careers.
Isn’t that better?
Sure, there are fans who play their favorites. Some who just have never warmed up to a player. But when you have hundreds weighing in, you get a pattern. And if you’ve been reading this blog for awhile, you know how I love patterns.
The polls we’ve asked you to complete for the last week+ have served to emphasize the common beliefs and minimize the outliers. The results are, for the most part, a very accurate representation of how fans feel overall.
Below, I’ve divided the grading to show groups, followed by the percentage of fans who assigned that grade.
And the results are telling.
Overall, you’re tough on the players. There’s no grade inflation here. Quite the opposite.
Look at each grade and how many or how few players are listed for each.
Look at which category has the most players.
What does this all say about the team and what needs to be done to the roster?
After each category, read my quick observations about what each one says.
