What should the guidelines be for judging Manager of the Year in MLB?
Should the focus be on how many games your team won or how far you got in the playoffs?
Or should it be about the man who got the most out of the talent he was given?
Or should it be a mix of the two?
There are 3 logical candidates in the American League.
The first is the Cleveland Guardians Stephen Vogt. In his first year, he kept his team at the top and they barely beat the Detroit Tigers in the playoffs. They finished with 92 wins, improving over the 2023 year in which they won 76.
Vogt inherited a team that hadn’t changed much from Terry Francona who missed much of the 2023 season due to health reasons. The loss of their manager and the need to have an interim skipper were factors in why the team improved this year. Not necessarily due to an improvement in coaching but more about the stabilization of the roster.
Then there are the Kansas City Royals who went from 106 losses and last place in 2023 to being tied with the Tigers for 2nd place. It was Matt Quatraro’s 2nd season with the team.
The Royals made a lot of additions to their roster with free agents and significantly boosted their payroll. They made the playoffs but won only 1 game against the Yankees.
The third likely candidate is A. J. Hinch. The Tigers’ payroll dropped in 2024 as bigger contracts fell off the books coupled with the influx of rookies making their debuts. They signed no significant free agents and traded off multiple veteran players at the end of July.
The Tigers had many of their best players on the IL for significant parts of the year and lost their entire starting rotation not named Tarik Skubal. Hinch is widely credited with an infamous speech to his players about who they wanted to be. It was after that talk that the team took off and put up MLB’s best record in the last 2 months of the season.
Which one of these 3 is most deserving of being elected Manager of the Year?
We know that the winner should be the one who got the most out of their team combined with their final season record.
But today, we’re going to make you pick just 1 rationale. Which one should be given more weight?
