DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.

What should the guidelines be for judging Manager of the Year in MLB?
Should the focus be on how many games your team won or how far you got in the playoffs?
Or should it be about the man who got the most out of the talent he was given?
Or should it be a mix of the two?

There are 3 logical candidates in the American League.

The first is the Cleveland Guardians Stephen Vogt. In his first year, he kept his team at the top and they barely beat the Detroit Tigers in the playoffs. They finished with 92 wins, improving over the 2023 year in which they won 76.
Vogt inherited a team that hadn’t changed much from Terry Francona who missed much of the 2023 season due to health reasons. The loss of their manager and the need to have an interim skipper were factors in why the team improved this year. Not necessarily due to an improvement in coaching but more about the stabilization of the roster.

Then there are the Kansas City Royals who went from 106 losses and last place in 2023 to being tied with the Tigers for 2nd place. It was Matt Quatraro’s 2nd season with the team.
The Royals made a lot of additions to their roster with free agents and significantly boosted their payroll. They made the playoffs but won only 1 game against the Yankees.

The third likely candidate is A. J. Hinch. The Tigers’ payroll dropped in 2024 as bigger contracts fell off the books coupled with the influx of rookies making their debuts. They signed no significant free agents and traded off multiple veteran players at the end of July.
The Tigers had many of their best players on the IL for significant parts of the year and lost their entire starting rotation not named Tarik Skubal. Hinch is widely credited with an infamous speech to his players about who they wanted to be. It was after that talk that the team took off and put up MLB’s best record in the last 2 months of the season.

Which one of these 3 is most deserving of being elected Manager of the Year?
We know that the winner should be the one who got the most out of their team combined with their final season record.
But today, we’re going to make you pick just 1 rationale. Which one should be given more weight?
Today’s blog addresses this question and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!
For this one blog only, you’ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.
TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

Which criteria should carry more weight when selecting the Manager of the Year?

1. Overall team record and playoffs.

2. Doing the most with the talent given to him.

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.

For decades, the AL Central was the butt of many jokes. The weakest of all 6 divisions.
But something has been happening over the past couple years. The level of performance has been going up.
This year, the AL Central was the best performing division. The only one in which 4 out of 5 teams finished above .500.

And all 3 skippers nominated for Manager of the Year are from this division.
The Guardians are back on track after going through a year in which their former manager, Terry Francona, experienced serious health problems.
The Royals invested significant sums in their roster.
And A. J. Hinch took his team to the playoffs despite numerous player injuries and the loss of 4 out of 5 starting pitchers.

But is the rise of the AL Central, a good thing for the Detroit Tigers?
Does the increase in more competitive franchises help or hurt Detroit?
Do the better teams inspire the Tigers to raise their own bar and want to build a more competitive roster?
Will it get them to spend more on the roster?
Or do teams like the Guardians and Royals stand in the way of Detroit’s return to the top of the AL Central standings?

Is the rise of the AL Central a good or bad thing for the Detroit Tigers?

1. It's a good thing.

2. It's a bad thing.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

The 2024 season is over but that doesn’t mean the stories of that year have ended as well.
In fact, much of what happened over the past year still has life. Life that will most likely be renewed in 2025.
Some of these issues are positive in nature, others not so much. It’s up to the Tigers whether they can or are able to harness the good factors once again for the new season and if they will take the necessary steps to finally put an end to the negative ones.
What are we talking about?
Since this is Friday, I’ve got a list of the top 5 best feel-good moments as well as the ones that brought anguish to us all. The former group is one we want to see again in greater frequency and the latter among the topics we most want to see resolved.
