Game 9: Browns @ Lions Thread

Ballgame

Push comes to shove, would rather the Niners go winless than the Browns the rest of the season.

Cousins is a dumbshit .

Sack takes the to a 56 yard fg attempt .

Which the kid drills.

Diggs hit on Kizer killed any remaining momentum that the Browns had left.

Don’t be fooled by the final score.
The Detroit Lions won big again Sunday, 38-24, over the Cleveland Browns for their fourth double-digit victory in nine games this year, but it’s impossible to walk away from the game feeling good about this team and its playoff chances.

The Lions’ sixth-ranked run defense got gashed for a season-high 201 yards. Matthew Stafford threw an ugly interception early in the game. And if the Browns hadn’t Browns’d their way to the locker room at halftime, Sunday’s game might have had a different outcome.

The Lions won the game. You have to like that. But they also looked wholly unprepared for this one too. Their first seven offensive plays went like this: Minus-4 yards, minus-6 yards, minus-3 yards, punt, drop, 10-yard penalty, Eric Ebron catch, then interception. That's unacceptable against anyone, and especially against the Browns. And things got no better over the next two quarters, as Cleveland surpassed its season high on the ground in the third quarter. It wasn't until Kizer left the game that Detroit got the game under control. Again, you have to like that they came back to win the game. And again, if you're thinking big picture, this was not the look of a real contender.

Give credit to Quandre Diggs for changing the game by trucking Kizer late in the third quarter. He went unblocked on the corner blitz, which helps of course, but dropping Kizer is no joke. The rookie is big, and he's fast, and he's going to be really good if Cleveland doesn't break him first. But Diggs popped him good, and Kizer did not return until Detroit had already padded its lead to 38-24.

Diggs' play was a big one, and it might not have even been the biggest from the Lions' secondary. Nevin Lawson gave Detroit its first lead on one of the best pick-sixes you'll see this season. Lawson stripped Seth DeValve from behind, pounced on the ball, then scrambled to his feet and outran everybody down the left sideline for a 44-yard touchdown. The play was a terrific way to respond to a sluggish start that included getting burned for a 38-yard bomb on the first series, then allowing a touchdown on the second. Lawson was benched for D.J. Hayden on the ensuing drive, but Detroit gave him another shot and he rewarded their faith in the biggest way possible.

That pick-six was the Lions' fourth of the season, and including special teams, their sixth return for a score this season. That's a club high through nine games since 1954, and third most overall. And it's a big reason Detroit is 5-4 despite an offense that has ebbed and flowed.

The Lions fielded multiple calls about Eric Ebron at the trade deadline, but ultimately determined they were better off in 2017 trying to get him on track rather than give up. The early results have been promising. He caught a couple big balls late against Green Bay last week, then gave the Lions a lead they would not relinquish in the fourth quarter against Cleveland. He's been getting separation this year -- in fact, more separation than any other Lions receiver or tight end -- but now he's finishing those plays too. And that makes him a dangerous player in this offense, at last.

Kenny Golladay played sparingly in his first game back from a hamstring injury, but he came up big for Detroit in the third quarter. Facing a 24-17 deficit after Kizer's QB sneak, Stafford found Golladay for a 14-yard pass on the next drive, then came right back to him for 50 yards on the following play. That teed up Riddick's touchdown catch, and sparked the Lions' 21-0 run to end the game. This offense just has a whole other dimension when Golladay's length is on the field, and it's been sorely missed. And you have to figure his playing time will rise as he gets his fitness back after missing five games.

Taylor Decker made his long-awaited return at left tackle, although the Lions eased him back too by rotating him with Brian Mihalik. They seemed to hold up well, too, limiting promising rookie end Myles Garrett to one QB hit and no sacks.

Elsewhere on offense, Corey Robinson earned the start over Emmett Cleary and Don Barclay at right guard. On defense, Paul Worrilow earned a start at linebacker and Cornelius Washington replaced Ezekiel Ansah at defensive end. It was Washington's first start for Detroit, and he used to it tally his first sack.

There aren't many Lions players more exciting these days than rookie return man Jamal Agnew. He entered the weekend leading the league in punt returns, and averaged 14.0 yards per attempt against Cleveland. And that's not counting a huge return that was nullified by penalty. He's capable of changing a game on a dime, as we've already seen twice this year.

The Lions' running game has been bad most of the season, but it came up big against Cleveland's fourth-rated rush defense. They finished with 104 yards on the ground, and Ameer Abdullah plowed into the end zone for the second time in as many weeks. Matthew Stafford had some nice keeps too, including diving for the sticks to set up his game-tying touchdown pass to Theo Riddick in the third quarter.

Want to know how a team goes 0-9? They do what the Browns did to end the first half, when they had the ball at the goal line with 15 seconds left. But they decided to run DeShone Kizer up the middle for a sneak, even though they had no timeouts left. He was stuffed short, and time expired before they had a chance to attempt a field goal. So not only did they walk away scoreless, but they racked up an unsportsmanlike penalty as well that was assessed on the second-half kick. Dumb. Just dumb.

The Lions improved to 10-3 in November games since Jim Caldwell's arrival. That's the best record in the NFL, believe it or not.

Stafford finished 17-of-26 for 250 yards, three touchdowns and the early interception. Tate led all receivers with six catches for 97 yards.
He put the game away with a dagger of a 40-yard catch-and-run touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
And Abdullah paced the Lions with 52 yards on 11 carries.

QB Comparison: Stafford was just 6-of-11 passing for 57 yards with no touchdowns and an interception in the first half, but the second half was a whole different story for Stafford and the Lions' offense.
He tossed three second-half touchdowns and finished 17-of-26 passing for 249 yards with three touchdowns, one interception and a passer rating of 118.9.

Return touchdowns: Nevin Lawson’s 40-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in the second quarter was the Lions' fourth return touchdown on defense (three interceptions, one fumble) and their sixth overall (two punt returns).

It’s the most return touchdowns for the Lions through the first nine games of the season since 1971.

Offensive resurgence: The Browns came into the game ranked 27th in total offense (301.3 yards per game) and 23rd rushing (95.1). Cleveland gained 413 yards of total offense against the Lions, 201 of those coming on the ground.

Key stat: After some recent troubles scoring in the red zone, the Lions were a perfect 2-for-2 scoring in the red zone Sunday.

Special teams had help from everyone this week as Sam Martin was able to punt, racking up four for 176 yards, putting one inside the 20-yard line. Matt Prater made his only field goal from 46 yards out, and Jamal Agnew had four punt returns for 56 yards.

The Lions were up and down against the Browns, so you can imagine players stock would be as well.

Winning when you don't play your best game is a good sign, but continuously getting off to these horrible starts is unacceptable. It has become such a pattern it must be coaching.

Austin seems to make his adjustments after the defenses 1st or second series, Caldwell and Jim Bob don't seem to be able to do that for a half. Why is that?

Week 10 isn't working out in the Lions' favor at all. 6-3 Seahawks won vs @ 4-5 Cardinals, and hold one of the 2 WC spots, 7-2 Vikings won @ 4-5 Redskins, 5-4 Packers won @ 3-6 Bears, 5-3 Cowboys vs @ 4-4 Falcons is almost a wash, or perhaps slightly better if the Falcons win, (score currently 24-7 ATL 4th) and need 4-4 Dolphins to win vs @ 6-3 Panthers on MNF.

1-7 Giants are losing vs @ the 0-9 Niners 17-13 in the 4th, in an epic battle for a chance @ the NFL's #1 overall '18 draft pick.
