Game 9: Lions @ Bears Thread

Dan Orlovsky calls Matthew Stafford?s play vs. Bears ?very good?.
The former Lions quarterback called Stafford?s play ?very good? on Sunday.
Dan Orlovsky has never been shy in his support of his former teammate Matthew Stafford. The two made up the Detroit Lions? quarterback depth chart for three straight years from 2014 to 2016. There may not be a player that knows Stafford better than Orlovsky.

So it?s little surprise that Orlovsky came running to support Stafford after the Lions quarterback has come under fire for Detroit?s lackluster offensive performance over the past three games. In Stafford?s most recent game against the Bears, he threw two interceptions, completed just 59.5 percent of passes, and averaged a mere 6.5 yards per passing attempt.

Still, Orlovsky categorized Stafford?s play as ?very good.?

Dan Orlovsky

@danorlovsky7
Just rewatched & studied Bears game for the @Lions : This is 100% unbiased & keeping it real.
1) I know Offensive ball and QB play really well, & this offense, in and out.
2) Matthew played very good. 1 miss-read 1 miss throw. FAR FROM THE PROBLEM.
3) Theyre struggling to win vs Man.

First of all, as much as Orlovsky wants to claim he?s being ?100% unbiased? that is simply impossible. No one comes without bias, and hanging around Stafford for years has certainly made him vulnerable of showing favoritism towards his buddy.

That being said, Orlovsky?s viewpoint still carries value. Indeed, there aren?t a lot of people who know the offense better than Dan-O and he certainly knows the reads a quarterback needs to go through. And as for his conclusion that receivers aren?t winning man-to-man matchups, there?s some objective evidence to support those claims:

From @NextGenStats, the NFL average separation a WR gets from his nearest defender at time of catch/incompletion is 2.8 yards.

For the Lions yesterday:
-TJ Jones 2.48 yards
-Kenny Golladay 2.33
-Michael Roberts 1.78
-Marvin Jones 1.25

Anthony Miller, meanwhile, was 4.72 yards

Of course, there?s plenty of evidence to the contrary, as well. Stafford was 18th in DYAR according to Football Outsiders this week, and his PFF grade over the past three weeks has been bad.

The truth, as always, probably lies somewhere in the middle. Stafford is far from the Lions? biggest problems right now, but he certainly shoulders some of the blame.

This is the stuff I like to read. Not because of the Stafford stuff....but it shows exactly what most of us say. We got no damn separation Sunday. Teams are just playing straight up man with one or two deep safeties. We aren?t winning battles on the outside OR underneath. And, we can?t protect our QB anymore against basic 4 or 5 man pressures. It?s a bad combination.

The rest of the NFL runs a shit ton of rub routes, crossing routes....etc. NOT us. We aren?t winning man coverage and we don?t/won?t scheme to help.

TUESDAY TIDBITS: Team Pass Defense.
ProFootballJournal

Mention of Brian Stewart the current defensive backs coach of the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL). He was Defensive Coordinator at Rice University for the 2017 season. He was hired in the spring after the 2016 season.

The Lions had hope of contending this year, and Matt Patricia's background in New England was one of the reasons for that hope. He does not coach the secondary. Am not advocating that Brian Stewart be dismissed, yet after eight years away from the NFL and Detroit in last place he may want to get that resume out. Detroit now ranks 31st in the defensive passer rating category with a mark of 116.8. Ouch!

Orlovsky is still smoking something. Very good must mean something different for him. I also don't bye "As a QB he knows." He's an idiot. He couldn't read a defense just like Matt can't read a defense.

And you don't understand football. I'm not saying Stafford isn't part of the problem because he is. But look at the seperation numbers between our WRs and other teams WRs. It makes a difference. And call him an idiot all you want. He did play in the NFL. You never played an organized sport in your entire life.

He has a point there. But even based on that I could understand not much he could do or other parts of the team didn't get it done etc.. But not "Matt was very good."

First time in my life I can't argue with ya. I never watched a second of that football game. I couldn't find it for the life of me....

The one thing to be cautious on is this is only separation on attempted throws. So when Gallady is 3 yards behind the DB, but the ball is under-thrown and he has to stop and wait for the ball, at time of completion/incompletion the DB is within a yard.

Detroit Lions Podcast Episode 183 ? Lions Look To The Carolina Panthers. 89 minutes.

You guys really need to listen to the whole podcast.

In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Jeff ?The Riz? Risdon for a raucous breakdown of the past week in Detroit Lions news.
We manage to find a way to have some fun with the current situation while taking a deeper look at what ails the team and what it might take to fix things.

We start the week out discussing the loss to the Bears, and basically what happened in that game. It was heartbreaking and we all expected more from the Lions this week. We also wonder what happened to the team that we saw beat the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers this year.
The team is a bit bi-polar and we try to figure out why. We also give credit to some high character players the team has picked up in Damon ?Snacks? Harrison and Devon Kennard. Great twitter follows that will help you feel a heck of a lot better about your team.

Detroit Lions Podcast Weighs In On Coaching.
From there we dive into the Matt Patricia topic. It?s been a hot one as of late, and we talk about it from a number of different angles. Chris even manages to convince The Riz that we saw Jim Caldwell?s ceiling and that moving on was the right thing to do. From there the conversation hits a number of points and arguments for where we are and where we should go from here.

Once we?re done with that one, we move on to another smoking hot subject these days? Matthew Stafford and whether he should remain a Detroit Lion. We here on the Detroit Lions Podcast stand behind Stafford, but this isn?t just a rhetorical conversation. We bring facts, data, and our patented snark to the discussion. There are a number of points to address here, and we try to cover all of them.

After those conversations we take a look forward and determine how we might improve this year with what we have. Chris walks down the list and Riz reacts to a number of opportunities for the team to improve. The discuss the ins and outs of each approach and determine where things should go from here.

From there the boys of the Detroit Lions Podcast go into the upcoming game against the Carolina Panthers. We try to help predict what you might see and what to expect. Also, the Riz takes us ?Around The Division? for a look at what else is happening in the NFC North.

i cant remember the last time i thought "man that was a smart play we ran vs that defense" we literally never take advantage of what the defense is giving us. Other teams play defense based on what formation were in because we never...EVER...break tendency. Line up big...we run...every time....even when theres 9 in the box. The offense just plain sucks. I saw us actually try to run a rub route last week. Tj JOnes was crossing and dove out of the way of the opposing db completely taking him out of the route. Stafford got sacked. lol...just dumb shit. Cut his ass...

Pasqualoni is the coordinator who should be fired. Nepotism in Detroit

that's pretty standard around the league, hire your buddies and guys you have worked with before, nothing new under that sun.

Head coaches have it easy.. Hire a bunch of coaches to eventually be scapegoats down the line.

Maybe Patricia was a genius in letting JBC stay aboard. He can just blame "not having his guy". Plus, he will get another pass next year. His new excuse will be "everybody is learning a new offensive system"

Pasqualoni is a figurehead

Cooter is only here because Stafford said so

Patricia gets a free pass on offense until Cooter’s gone. Think most will see through any major defensive firings, but he technically still has a sacrificial lamb there.

Nope, when he retained JBC, JBC became his guy. He had the choice to fire or keep, he thought he was the best option.

lol...you are probably right. I just found this.

But Patricia took a different approach with the offense. The fate of offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter was one of the most intriguing decisions Patricia would have to make when he arrived. However, Patricia told DetroitLions.com that he had made up his mind before he even interviewed with the Lions. Cooter was staying.

That was REALLY stupid!
