Game 9: Lions @ Bears Thread

I think most here aren't putting all of the blame on Matt. But he does deserve some of the blame.

1st pick was a bad throw. It was well behind Jones even if he wouldn?t have fallen down.

2nd pick was a 3rd and long desperation throw. I have no real issue with it.

Offensive problems are a combination of a lot of things. We?re too predictable.....WR aren?t beating man coverage.....we?ve regressed running the ball.....pass protection.....Stafford.....it?s all part of it. Personally I think JBC is the single biggest culprit....but that?s just me.

Players have to play better, too.

Opposing wide receivers completely wide open. It's like they decided to leave them open on purpose.

We had it with Brandon Powell wide open middle of the field, hand up. Didn't see him

Golladay behind the DBs, short throw, leads to a drop, in stride a huge gain or TD.

Throw to TE is batted down at the line, yet same play Marvin Jones comes clean out of his break and settles down without a defender within 5 yards. Didn't see him.

That's just three examples off the top of my head, based on TV coverage. I imagine the all 22 tape would show even more missed chances.

Pride Of Detroit Lions Blog PODcast reacts to Lions-Bears, puts coaches on notice. 72 minutes.
Things only seem to be getting worse and a sleepy PODcast crew breaks it down.

The Detroit Lions will not play another meaningful game in the 2018 season. Their 34-22 loss to the Chicago Bears put an end to any real hopes of even moderate success this year. Even if the Lions were to somehow win out with one of the toughest remaining schedules in the league, their ceiling is now just 10-6, which probably wouldn?t even be good enough for a trip to the postseason.

So this week, the PODcast crew digests what happened on Sunday, but then turns their focus ahead. As a fan, how do you enjoy the next two months of football with no stakes attached? Is it okay to just go out and enjoy a day at the cider mill or something? If you are committed to watching Lions football, how can you still enjoy the game with no expectations?

We tackle it all on this week?s episode:

This week on the PODcast:
Things get a little loopy as Jeremy, Ryan and Chris join together for a midnight taping.

The crew gets heated on the coaching, as the team has failed to show any sort of improvement, as promised.

If 9-7 isn?t good enough with this talent, what the hell is this season?

The offense is a mess, Matthew Stafford is regressing and it seems like the writing is on the wall for Jim Bob Cooter.

We point out some individual performances of note, including ?Snacks? eating again, Kerryon Johnson beasting on a hobbled leg and the horrible, horrible play of the secondary.

#AudibleDong

There?s meaningless football ahead, how does one enjoy it? Jeremy, Ryan and Chris all lay out different options for stakeless Sundays.

Mailbag distracts the pain by naming the best Disney/Pixar movies, hating on ?How I Met Your Mother? and snow cones, and eventually brings it back to Lions football, wondering what would have happened if the Lions had hired Matt Nagy over Matt Patricia.

The league is now pass to set up the run. Jbc still believes in run to setup the pass, this is one reason it fails

That and his formations are so God damn predictable that 8 out of 10 plays I KNOW what's coming watching from my couch at home... Guarantee the guys who digest tape for a living know exactly what we are doing before we do it more than not...

Midway through the season

Offense
22.4 points per game (20th)

Defense
27.1 points per game (28th)

Dan Orlovsky calls Matthew Stafford?s play vs. Bears ?very good?.
The former Lions quarterback called Stafford?s play ?very good? on Sunday.
Dan Orlovsky has never been shy in his support of his former teammate Matthew Stafford. The two made up the Detroit Lions? quarterback depth chart for three straight years from 2014 to 2016. There may not be a player that knows Stafford better than Orlovsky.

So it?s little surprise that Orlovsky came running to support Stafford after the Lions quarterback has come under fire for Detroit?s lackluster offensive performance over the past three games. In Stafford?s most recent game against the Bears, he threw two interceptions, completed just 59.5 percent of passes, and averaged a mere 6.5 yards per passing attempt.

Still, Orlovsky categorized Stafford?s play as ?very good.?

Dan Orlovsky

@danorlovsky7
Just rewatched & studied Bears game for the @Lions : This is 100% unbiased & keeping it real.
1) I know Offensive ball and QB play really well, & this offense, in and out.
2) Matthew played very good. 1 miss-read 1 miss throw. FAR FROM THE PROBLEM.
3) Theyre struggling to win vs Man.

First of all, as much as Orlovsky wants to claim he?s being ?100% unbiased? that is simply impossible. No one comes without bias, and hanging around Stafford for years has certainly made him vulnerable of showing favoritism towards his buddy.

That being said, Orlovsky?s viewpoint still carries value. Indeed, there aren?t a lot of people who know the offense better than Dan-O and he certainly knows the reads a quarterback needs to go through. And as for his conclusion that receivers aren?t winning man-to-man matchups, there?s some objective evidence to support those claims:

From @NextGenStats, the NFL average separation a WR gets from his nearest defender at time of catch/incompletion is 2.8 yards.

For the Lions yesterday:
-TJ Jones 2.48 yards
-Kenny Golladay 2.33
-Michael Roberts 1.78
-Marvin Jones 1.25

Anthony Miller, meanwhile, was 4.72 yards

Of course, there?s plenty of evidence to the contrary, as well. Stafford was 18th in DYAR according to Football Outsiders this week, and his PFF grade over the past three weeks has been bad.

The truth, as always, probably lies somewhere in the middle. Stafford is far from the Lions? biggest problems right now, but he certainly shoulders some of the blame.

Yes. Cooter, to me, has had one good game this year. NE. Good blend of run, pass, play action and different formations. At this point...it just seems lucky.

He cannot scheme players open....he?s predictable....vanilla.....screens are called out and read on a regular basis. He just needs to go. Yes, players need to play better....but pay attention to what?s going on....offensive minds are running this game. College and NFL.

Somebody made a great point a week or 2 ago....Cooters playing Tecmo Bowl and most of the rest of the league is playing Madden ?19.

Well then it sounds like the Lions need better WR's nobody can get open. Just need more weapons. rinse wash repeat every 3-5 years.
