I mentioned earlier that is not what GOT is about. For those who have watched it, they will agree. Sure some of that stuff is present in small doses, but it is by no means central to the show at all.
It's popular because of the rich characters and the complexity of the story. It appeals to a wide audience because there's literally something for everybody. My mom hates violence too but she tolerates it because the rest of the show is so good. You don't like dragons? Fine, they appear for maybe on average 30 seconds an episode. There isn't just sex and violence, there is political intrigue, power struggles, love stories, family dynamics, wartime strategy, moral/ethical conflicts, characters trying to find their identities, and it actually runs contrary to many conventional themes you will see in fantasy stories like Lord of the Rings.
Having said that, of course not everybody will be a fan
