I have been a Buckeye for a long time

I think the Ohio* equivalent of Brady Hoke is ....... (was) Tressel.

He was perfect for the role combining all the various traits the fanbase wants in a head coach -- not too flashy, "God-fearing," Military-loving, "Defense-oriented" and all that nonsense ... talking about Michigan and beating Michigan and then beating Michigan ....

Frankly I don't think there's another comparable "Hoke" out there unless you think Bo Peweenie would leave conference rival NU for the job.

No way Pelini would leave Nebraska for ohio* right now.. He's got NU back on their game and the sky's the limit for him there.

I think they have to resurrect a guy like Walt Harris. Who in their right mind would walk into that mess? A coach that has a successful program and is a "big name". I think not. Harris is a disciplinarian. He has head coaching experience, and has been an assistant at ohio*. He would be a good fit there.

Good call on Harris too ...and for the record, I don't believe Peweenie would make the move, especially now that NU is a B10 school.

But he'd be that "Ohio son coming home" the fans seem to always want. And remember, John Cooper was hired because he beat UM in the Rose Bowl while at ASU ... he was an 'outsider' and considered a failure for 'not getting it.'

I don't expect OSU to go off the reservation.

I don't know about that.

Ohio is only a top 10 job in the eyes of their fans... it's NOT a top 10 job to outsiders BECAUSE OF their fans. Who wants to put up with that sort of hostile environment?

for godsakes, they chased their local hero, Kirk Herbstreit, out of Columbus because he dared to criticise their program - and his criticism was obviously warranted. Any coach worth his salt is going to demand a hefty salary in exchange for that, and plenty of contractual safeguards to protect his reputation when the locals inevitably start slinging mud at him because he didn't do enough cheating to beat "TTUN" every season...

...that's not all. Look at past buckeye coaches.

Widdows - went from HC back to assistant, never wanted the pressure of the HC position, just stepped up during WWII
Bixler - Resigned after 1 season because of the pressure.
Fesler - Resigned after losing the Snow Bowl in his 4th season, again, pressure according to a buckeye historian.
Woody - Fired
Bruce - Fired
Cooper-Fired
Tressel - you tell me what you want to call it
and it doesn't look good for Fickell.

Man! That's like 6 fired in a row, soon to be 7...call what you want.

there have got to be some former buckeye players from the Bruce or Cooper eras that have gone into coaching & would be willing to put in the hard work and effort to clean out the mess from the scandal-ridden cesspool of the Gene Smith-Jim Tressel era, and get the program back on its feet, right?

some of those guys were coming out on the record criticising T-Peezy & Tressel for their actions.

We were able to go back to our foundations as a touchstone during the RR years... you'd think ohio could do some of that now.

They need someone to write their history clearly in the press, that Tressel was NOT part of their legacy; the link back to Woody Hayes needs to be made. That is... if they really care to clean things up, instead of just hide them in the closet until this dustup blows over...

I think it will be Meyer if he wants the job. Gee and the Board of Trustees have already allocated 35 million in a 7 yr deal guaranteed base salary for the next HC. I'm sure there are also plenty of incentive clauses to go along with the 5 million a year. Both Nebraska and Oklahoma knew we might be interested in Stoops and Pellini, so they negotiated their deals to keep their guys happy. Gee knows the natives in Cbus are restless and there is no way they're going to keep Luke now. He's a good guy, but he was put into an almost impossible situation and now he's just a placeholder.

Well, I guess then the real question is if Meyer wants the job. I don't think he will want it.

Some of us 'knew' that Luke was just a placeholder at the beginning of the season. Now its just coming to fruition.

Yeah, I had this conversation with BBB on the other board (welcome over by the way), and said from the start I thought Fickell was in for one year, then Meyer, after a year to "heal up" and "spend time with his family" would be brought in.

One issue I hadn't expected was more dirt to surface like this past week. I think Meyer would have taken it had nothing new arisen, but now who knows what else is in the closet?

ironically, I think ohio's attempt to be at least half-honest here is going to sink them.

When you break the rules, you either have to be entirely corrupt, or entirely candid about it; the half-assed approach Smith has pursued, whereby they deny, deny, deny, and then pull some knee-jerk reaction to placate the NCAA and public opinion, is the worst possible thing to do.

of course, cleaning house and fessing up is the RIGHT thing to do; I don't think Smith or Gee are capable of it though. Actually, at this point, I KNOW they aren't capable of it.

They'll continue to bump along here, trying to put out separate fires as they break out... they'll admit someone took money from a booster, or sold memorabilia, or had some "job" whereby they collected wages for no work, without telling the whole story, leading everyone to start prying in order to find out more. meanwhile, eventually everyone concerned: ohio, the NCAA, the BigTen will start to look so bad that the NCAA will be forced to go in there and really slap them around. Because of all the scrutiny on the program brought on by Tat-gate, these incidents are no longer news blurbs off on the side at ESPN... they are full-on front page banner headlines.

the pendulum has swung back... all those tainted wins the ohio jackasses rubbed in our face are coming back on them with a vengeance.

I wonder if they feel it was worth it?

I'm sure they do. Remember that Jackass CB? He would always talk about how he wouldn't care if 'his team' cheated and won a national title, because he would always have the memory of enjoying that title run. The OH* fans probably think just like this...

Did CB come out and admit he was a UOS fan and that's why he's not here?

You guys are too hard on CB. He's clearly a Michigan fan who just happens to live in Columbus and thus has a unique and balanced perspective on things. Questioning his loyalty and/or allegiance is just idiotic. You should all be ashamed...

"You guys"? I'm just asking the question. I knew he was too sympathetic to them than I cared for, but still thought he was a Michigan fan. Just wondering if he outed himself (which would surprise me).

You were probably the worst, actually. You can act like you didn't give him a hard time now that the old boards are gone, but we all know you were always one of the first to slam him.

Man, you are WAY off. CB and I got along fine. I think you're confusing me with Hungry.

Well, he never came out and completely admitted it, but that pic of him in the OSU t-shirt and being on his knees in front of a bunch of naked OSU football players pretty much said it all

Nope, you were always harder on him than me. I was always nice to the poor, misguided fool.

He was getting on in age a bit, I hope he's not sick or unable to post or just lost with the robust board changes and all. It doesn't look like he's posting anywhere on ESPN boards from casually glancing over the weeks

He and I were the elder statesmen and used to talk on another board as well (that I invited him to, by the way, Art), but he left that one long ago.

I don't bother with the robust board any more.
