I hope we lose tomorrow

Stat shown on MLB last night, Valverde is 0-3 with a 6.59 in the post season.

That's not going to cut it, I don't want to see him back next year, closer by committee, I don't care, anyone(s) but Jose Fastball, hell even Coke would be better. Did I just say that. Yes, Yes I did..

Coke would be horrible. LH batters rock him and RH batters just obliterate him.

Jose looked pretty good in his last save opportunity prior to last night's meltdown. There was no way to predict he was going to blow up like he did.

Warming up another arm while your supposed closer is pitching is sending the wrong message and completely undermines having your closer in there in the first place.

When your closer is one of the worst RP to pitch at least 50 innings this year, then whatever conventional wisdom you use with other closers goes out the window.

This is the MLB playoffs, fuck babying players and playing to their ego.

Valverde sucks, he shouldn't be closing, and if he's going to close, you better always have somebody else ready, and as soon as he gets in trouble, yank him.

If he doesn't like it, oh well, the goal is to win, and doing that will improve your chances of doing so.

Honestly there is no way I would go with a closer by committee next season. The best case for a replacement next season would be Jonathan Broxton considering the options available at least in Free agency. Or we could go with giving Al Al a shot but with his arm issues this season I would much rather see another season before promoting him up to closer.

I know its only the first round but the pitching carousel tonight should be JV followed by Fister. Fister would have plenty of time for rest. Pull out all the stops.

Leyland's BP pitching rotation sucks. Why can't a BP guy pitch a 2nd inning if he's dealing and only throws a handful of pitches. Not here, you gotta have Coke/Dotel in the 7th, gotta have Benoit in the 8th and gotta have Valcrapo in the 9th. ALWAYS.

Closer by committee is the only logical way to run a bullpen.

The whole idea of having a set pitcher for a set situation is asinine.

Yet it is what 95% of MLB teams do :) and what every single team would do if they had a quality pitcher to do it with.

Yup, and it's still asinine.

But MLB managers are largely uncreative and follow whatever rules all the other managers follow.

So unfortunately were stuck running our bullpen in a much less effective way than we could otherwise.

The difference in today's day and age though is when you have LEGIT star type players as we have THREE of them on this team (Miggy, Prince and JV) you can rest assured those players will have some influence on what type of manager is brought in here especially after the debacle that happened in Boston this year with the players from the start not agreeing with Bobby V being brought in. We will be replacing someone in JL that is know as a PLAYERS coach and is absolutely beloved in that clubhouse. Trust me I have been in this clubhouse several times and spoke with players every spring down in Lakeland the last 10+ years. He is LOVED by the players and replacing him with the wrong type of non experienced manager could wreak havoc on the future of this team.

Also lets not forget JV has 2 years left on his contract and Miggy has 3 so making the wrong type of managerial move could not only cost us in regards to team chemistry but as well the wrong type move could also cost us 2 of the best players in the game.

Right, so we keep a pisspoor manager because the players like him? That should not be how it works. Who's to say they won't like the next guy?

+1

Any manager in the game would have used Valverde given the situation last night. Not Jim's fault that sorry sack of shit can't close out a game with a 2 run lead.

so the only problem last night was Valverde? Are you blind?

At least we can bitch about different reason's?

exactly! Right now, I'm so tired of Leyland, Peralta, DY, that I'd rather they run just anyone out there, so that I can bitch about someone else. At least, then something would've been done. Then again, the move might work and the Tigers might win more games.

That pretty much sums it up, lol. Who here has confidence in the trio of Coke, Benoit and Valcrapo? That's a bad BP. The 7, 8 and 9 guys are suppose to be better.

We do not have a quality pitcher to do it with.

Al AL - has pitched once all season on less then 2 full days rest and not a single back to back day appearance.
Benoit - has stated he does NOT want to close.
Dotel - clearly is not an option to close games as he hasn't fared well when given the chances in his career.
Coke - cannot get out a RH hitter to save his life this season
Valverde - Although horrible this season is really our only option to close games even though it has cost us this season and now again in the postseason.

If somebody is a better pitcher than somebody else, they'd also be a better closer than that person.

That much should be common sense.

I think one of the points others have mentioned is that if you're using Valcrapo get someone up in the pen if things aren't going right. What has he done where he deserves to close games out regardless the situation? You give up a single and back to back doubles and not a smidgen of someone warming up? Or maybe Leyland go out and talk? He's not Mo Rivera.

Really we had only 2 pitchers last night (Porcello and Smyly) that was even available to come in last night if we pulled Jose. Not sure you would want to put in either of those pitchers in for Jose in a closing situation.

What makes anyone in this organization think 95% fastballs at 94-96 is a closer anyway?

That's because Dotel/Coke have to be the 7th and Benoit has to be the 8th and the fact he won't go more than 1 inning with anyone even if they're getting it done. But this was more about all season. Leyland has his ways and won't deviate from it like continually batting Delmon 5.
