why are they making a big deal out of this? It's like adding AAA hits to ML hits.

a little sarcastic but how can you just add his hits from Japan? I'm sure it is a little better than AAA but I doubt it is much better.

Considering every scout agrees the Japanese league is pretty much right between AAA and MLB, that the League has fewer games and thus the hit totals are harder to come by, and that Ichiro continued to be one of the greatest hit producers in history in the MLB, I would say the accomplishment is being fairly covered. Taking away the hits from his time in Japan is both unfair to him and the sport.

If you're going to take away Ichiro's numbers in Japan because of competition, you should take away everyone's numbers before MLB integration. How tough were those leagues in reality when so much talent couldn't even apply?

They are calling it "4000 hits in professional baseball". If that's the case why not add all hits from A all the way up to AAA. Those are all professional leagues too.

As far as records from back in the day...I do take them with a grain of salt. Back when Babe Ruth was playing there wasn't much competition.

No reason to knock Ichiro's accomplishment.

Nobody is comparing it to 4000 MLB hits, but it is a pretty big deal, especially when you consider the age he came to MLB at.

I think he is one of the most over rated players in MLB since he has been playing.

Who cares if its better than AAA, its not MLB. Its been a hell of a player and it sucks he didn't start here when he was 19 but them the breaks. Why not add Cecil Fielder's HR from Japan or Rod "I see you" numbers.

This is what I have a problem with:

Ichiro Suzuki joined elite company on Wednesday, joining Pete Rose and Ty Cobb as the only professional baseball players to collect 4,000 hits at the major league level.

Its just dumb.

Next they will add in the numbers European basketball players had before they got to the NBA.

It's a nice honor, some politics involved imo,

Look he didn't get them all here obviously, if he gets another 280 or so by playing 2 more years he will have 3000 here in only 15 or 16 years.

The guy did everything but hit for power, great defensively and the most accurate arms for most of that time since Al and Roberto.
Lots of 200 hit seasons and the record of 262.

They showed a chart, and somebody here might have added it, beside Cobb and Rose, they included Aaron's and Musial's minor league hit totals and they both were over 4000.

Probably a first ballot hall of famer, he's probably in now even he he doesn't play for the 3K.

Ichiro is a certain shoo-in for a first-ballot HOF induction, esp. given all of the confirmed and suspected roiders of his era who won't likely ever be voted in, and no matter how long they were to remain on the ballot.

As far as including his hits in Japan, I tend to dismiss/disregard them as being irrelevant to his years in MLB, but all are relevant as a global-worldwide professional baseball player. If a pro's years playing in Mexico, S Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, DR. ect...aren't countable, then why should any that were/are played in Nippon?

Had he been in the majors for that entire time he'd still be right at 4000 hits. It's not like he didn't immediately get hits once he faced big league pitching. He averaged 224 hits per year his 1st 10 years in the majors. And because of that I still give him huge credit for this.

He's only been overrated the last few years. In his prime he simply had no equal, I don't see how anyone, can call that overrated. Legendary OBP, baserunning skills, and a wizard in the field.

If he had ever hit for power, he would go down as among the best OF's of all time.

I wouldnt say legendary obp, he's never walked much so his obp has always been tied to his high BA. just once in his ML career has he had an obp over .400, whereas miggy's CAREER obp is .399.

he was a great outfielder in his prime, and 4k hits is an awesome accomplishment. he will be a 1st ballot hall of famer. he is most certainly not overrated.

Player A Career = .376 OBP .480 SLG .856 OPS 10.00 PA/BB (minus IBB) 10X GG

Player B Career = .388 OBP .459 SLG .847 OPS 17.09 PA/BB (minus IBB) 5x GG

Player C Career = .362 OBP .416 SLG .778 OPS 24.93 PA/BB (minus IBB) 10x GG

All three were primarily RFers.
