He's only been overrated the last few years. In his prime he simply had no equal, I don't see how anyone, can call that overrated. Legendary OBP, baserunning skills, and a wizard in the field.

If he had ever hit for power, he would go down as among the best OF's of all time.
Legendary????

He only had one season with an OBP over .400 with a .414 in 2004 and was 9th in the majors. 30 guys this season are above his career average of .362.

If he was "legendary" in anything, it was infield hits.

statements like this are why I think he is over rated. His lifetime OBP is only .362 which is not good for a leadoff hitter that is supposed to be a first ballot HOF. OPS of about .750 for a corner OF that is supposed to be a first ballot HOF. Don't get me wrong...I think he was a very good player but highly overrated IMO

Yes, the Legendary OBP is a bit over the top. Regardless what other HOF he is compared too.

I think Tom makes a good point, a ton of people on this board over the past few years have said if you're in right you should be a certain type of player. One that has a good OPS, not sure .780 cuts it. Though with his defense you kind of forgive that a little bit.

He's certainly has had some HOF years, and if he gets 3000 hits I see no problem with him being a HOF. For me, 3000 is the magical number. But I'm not sure he'll get there..

But now, no. IMO. And certainly no 1st ballot. But he gets a lot of hype and now with the mention of 4000 hits, they'll elect him.

He's overrated because people think he's been the best player for 20 years and that isn't so. IMO.

In discussing getting hits for many years, Ichiro was the best at-it, since Tony Gwynn last played.

accumulating hits....yes....he has been the best at that since he has been in the league....but that doesn't = greatness.

He was a singles hitter. A slap hitter. He doesn't even get many doubles. You think with his speed, he'd get 40 every year.

I wouldnt say legendary obp, he's never walked much so his obp has always been tied to his high BA. just once in his ML career has he had an obp over .400, whereas miggy's CAREER obp is .399.

he was a great outfielder in his prime, and 4k hits is an awesome accomplishment. he will be a 1st ballot hall of famer. he is most certainly not overrated.

Yeah, what I originally typed was batting average, but since I always complain about it being a hollow stat I figured I'd catch some flak for using it, so I swapped it to OBP (which I prefer enormously to .BA) and never even checked, I just assumed it would be higher than that...I forgot he never walked much.

But in the end I caught flak for it anyways, so...whaddyagonnado?

Still, I don't see how anyone could call him overrated, 10 time AS, 10 GG's, 8 times in the top 20 MVP voting, 1 MVP, RoY, 3 silver slugger awards...after 2010 he clearly started seriously declining, but man, he's getting old.

He's a hall of famer in my book. MLB record 262 hits in one season and also a record 10 straight 200 hit seasons. Might need that 3000 hits to get first ballot though.

Not a fan of using AS games as a measuring stick though.

His MVP was not MVP worthy, IMO. He was just a huge surprise almost, adding excitement.. Had a hell of a year, but .838 seems a bit disappointing for an MVP. Even his best year, 3 years later - he finished 7th.
