If Calvin retires does he make the HOF?

It's not all about stats or did you not see my two references of Gale Sayers?

When it comes down to the HOF it usually is all about stats and longevity. Calvin wasn't "great" for very long. He didn't miss a game this year and its hard to put him on a top 10 WR list. Again, I completely agree and think he belongs in the HOF. Im just saying...its going to get very hard to sort these WRs out when it comes to HOF discussion moving forward.

Quality > Quantity

We preach it at QB when it comes to attempts/yards, stands to reason it would be that way at WR too. I love Steve Smith but he was never the unquestioned best at his position in any season.

So you have Chris Johnson going to the HOF as a rb?

it cant just be quality > quantity

Calvin did it better longer than chris Johnson.

Steve Smith did it better longer than calvin.

Its just an interesting point of discussion...I probably put Steve Smith in the HOF to be honest.

No one said it will be easy. Most here are saying he won't be a 1st year guy, most WR aren't. But one day I could see him in..

Edit: And as far as sorting I thing CJ should be looked on with his peers, his era. Not a guy like Brown from Pittsburgh or other guy coming up. It's easier to pass now than when CJ started out.

And IMO, CJ was great for 9 years. Who cares if he didn't put up 1500 yards every year.

Here's a name to compare. Torry holt played 1 more year than calvin and has 1700 more yards and way more important wins. Why does calvin deserve the hof more than him?

he actually played 2 more years, has 9 less TDs but 189 more catches.

But...not a bad guy to bring up. I don't think many consider him a HOF caliber player.

I haven't weighed in yet. I think CJ had some really good individual seasons that could benefit, but I think his overall numbers and a little lack of longevity will hurt him. I think it's borderline if he retired today. We watched him every Sunday so I think we have a more positive view of him...but how the national voters view him, I'm not so sure.

I would say if Terrell Davis got in, Calvin gets in.

Longevity doesn't matter nearly as much as how dominant you were when you were there. Barry got in. Calvin will get in.

I don't think Davis is a HOF caliber player...but that is just my opinion. 7600 yards in 7 sesons?

Davis won 2 OPOYs, 1 MVP, and 1 SB MVP which probably looks great to voters. CJ has none of those and was stuck with a shitty franchise...it is what it is. If the Lions were more successful, he would have a better chance.

When Barry retired he was second in league history for career rushing yards. Cal isn't top 20 in anything despite playing in a time where pumping up those stats is easier. I think can is the best wideout had ever seen. His numbers don't really reflect due to his nagging injuries the past few years just how dominant he really should have been. But career wise it might be hard to make that argument when it's his time if he doesn't play at least 2 more years with solid production.

WR don't win MVP's so I'm not sure you put that into play.

Lynn Swann says CJ may not make it in

TO doesn't make it on first ballot

No way CJ gets in on the first ballot if T.O. didn't. Heck...he might have a hard time making it at all.

Swann needs to stfu for real. Buddy wasn't even that good of a WR. His numbers were god awful. Only reason he's in because of the rings and that's wrong IMO

People hated T.O.........everyone loves CJ. It probably shouldn't ..... But it makes a big difference.

It might not be 1st ballot (I've softened on that point) but CJ gets in......without question.

It's hard to compare WRs from that era to today. Passing numbers are through the roof!

Here is the passing yard leaders for the following years and where that would rank in 2015

1974 2667 (26)
1975 3169 (23)
1976 3104 (23)
1977 2803 (25)
1978 3468 (21)

True. Different era and style back then. More of a ground and pound attack.

And QB's threw a ton of INT back then. Not sure you saw any 30 TD, less than 10 INT back then.
