I'm trying to gather up some of the other posters to come over from the ESPN board

Meh, Spartans are entirely obsessed with Michigan and there are just as many "Walmart" Sparties as there are Wolverines, who get off on Michigan losing (not that they went to State, or anything).

But you seem to be into anecdotal stories about interacting with Michigan "fans" at things like charity events, so here's one for you. In March we were in Beaver Creek for spring break during the NCAA tourney run. Some pizza cook at an on mountain restaurant in seeing my wife's Michgan t-shirt made a remark about refusing to serve her because of the shirt, as he'd (proudly) graduated from State .... See - the softball tossed right there, to mock a Sparty grad for cooking pizza for a living???

Later at a local sports bar with TVs everywhere a huge table of Spartans watching Duke beat their team stayed and openly rooted for Kansas to beat Michigan. The two buckeyes in the bar bought our table a round of shots and a toast to UM for beating Kansas.

never thought I'd see an example of buckeye fans exhibiting more "class" that Spartans, but there it was. And like byco, I consider MSU a major rival, but once you leave the state of Michigan nobody outside either fanbase cares a lick. but to me it's personal -- my little sister went to State (appropriately enough), though she openly roots for Michigan outside games involving both teams.

You are missing the playfull intent, apparently. The term "tertiary" invited the response. But I'll stop now, and resume talking about run expectancy on the Tigers' threads. Less controversial.

For the record: MSU is a MAJOR rival. Nothing ruins my day more than when M loses to MSU. Bo did not understand that his first season and he learned quickly. Also ... I know a guy who played for Duffy in the late 60s. Said he was a terrible coach and a drunk. I'm just the messinger. He was a starter, so there's no resentment over lack of playing time.

Duffy may have been a drunk, I don't know anything about his personal life, just his coaching record which was pretty good. considering we just joined the big ten and didn't have the resources of other conference schools. a lot of his success was due to the influx of black players from the south that would never play a bama but went to MSU and became stars, like Webster, Smith, etc. once schools became more integrated, those guys had more options and DD didn't have the same success. the game may have passed him by as he got older too but integration hurt him as well

of course there are a-hole MSU fans, there is some thuggish behavior I've seen at Spartan stadium, etc.

I openly cheer against Michigan, i'm not going to go to a crowded bar and try to rub it in someones face but I don't want them to win games. what's good for Michigan is bad for MSU, so I don't want Michigan to do well. if you ask me if I wanted Kansas to beat UM, of course I did.

one of my favorite UM examples was sitting in front of two UM fans decked out in Michigan gear at the MSU-UK game at Ford field in 2003. they came to the game simply to cheer against MSU, which is taking it to another level. my wife did comment on how nice their pony tails looked

My Michigan family - my dad's side - are pretty much hicks and yokels in the Saginaw Valley who never went either to State or Michigan; my dad's generation tended to work at Saginaw Steering Gear (it's gone now) or Dow in Midland; I think there were a couple of other big factories in the area people worked at.

The kids (kids? ha!) of my generation from that extended family generally went into construction, and so forth.

Anyway, everybody roots for both Michigan and State. I guess everyone probably has a favorite when the two play each other; some traditionally root for Michigan in football and Sparty in basketball.

I'm sure everyone rooted for Michigan to win the NC in basketball this year, just like they did when M has gotten there before; and they all, I'm sure, rooted for Sparty to win in Detroit a few years ago, just like they did everytime Sparty was there before.

funny though is that where I live is way pro MSU, kind of like a little pocket of green and white in the Birmingham/bloomfield area. Washtenaw county is all UM, Ingham is all MSU. most of the east side, downriver, Macomb, etc is all UM

When State isn't playing Michigan, there's no schadenfreude. But it's all about that when they play each other.

Well, thinking of my friends at Michigan who were also from Metro Detroit... few stayed. a lot are in Chicago, NYC, or SFO. the MSU grads more or less stuck around.

maybe i'm just different but I don't think you need to cheer for your rivals. I remember friends of mine trying to argue with UM fans on why they should have cheered for us in the 09 title game, I thought it was stupid.

I've cheered against a girl with a Michigan sweatshirt on during the Jeopardy college tournament

And that's the difference between the ]|V|[ - State rivalry and the ]|V|[ - ohio* or ND rivalries IMHO.

Generally I root for Sparty to win against everyone but us. Unless there are directly adverse implications to ]|V|[ .

I never want to see ohio* or ND win. Ever.
Even if a win by one of them would help us, I just feel too dirty pulling for them. I can't root for either, I can't root against a team playing them, so I choose quiet indifference. It's my tertiary reaction.

please don't do the ohio * thing, it's embarrassing for your fan base.

it killed me to cheer for you guys against Indiana last year but I had to do it.

Rivals should only be "supported" in a contest that directly affects the counter-rival. And the counter-rival can delight in the irony that a rival's success was directly benefical.

Otherwise, I don't even watch MSU sports on TV. Unless it is playing hockey, because I would watch Clarkson and St. Cloud State play hockey on TV.

This is Michigan cyberspace, and we will refer to our MOST HATED RIVAL as we choose. You have no say in the matter.

After all, we do not comment on the manner in which you refer to the team your football program plays on the final week of the season, no matter which team it might be.

LOL.

That's the way we do it at TTUN now bro.
I could always go back to typing fO$U, but it is still pronounced oh-HI-oh. The "State" is silent.

I have no say in how you refer to OSU, but I can make fun of you mercilessly as I see fit. I can also revel in the ironic joy of you guys losing to the bobcats in the NCAA tourney. that's poetic justice

Now, hold on there ... Michigan did not lose; it ran out of fouls to give. And losing to the Charlotte Bobcats is not as shameful as it might seem.

saying FO$U makes sense, at least it's a decent attempt at an insult.

Michigan never loses, they just run out of time or get screwed by the refs. case and point, the basketball game in EL. Izzo knew that his team was hot and they were due to fall apart at any time so he pulled the starters up by 33, then UM started to assert its dominance against our walk ons. if there was another 10 minutes of that, UM would have made the furious comeback that we're used to.
