Internet Censorship.

What great thing has been lost to cancel culture that's so important for us to preserve? What's the go to example of cancel culture running amok?

People being tried in the court of public opinion is a problem, but with this Dr. Suess and Pepe LePew stuff, what have we lost?

exactly, who cares if a few books get burned I mean banned or people lose their livelihoods for having a different opinion? The first amendment is the most overrated amendment anyway.

It's absurd to act like this bullshit "cancel culture" crap is a new thing, or only one end of the political spectrum is guilty of it. If you were any sort of prominent entertainer or commentator from September 12, 2001 to around 2004, what happened to you if you criticised Bush or the War on Terror? Ask the Dixie Chicks if you don't remember...

In before "it's a slippery slope". First, it's a cartoon skunk, next it's your religion.

Good thing you got this in before anyone could use that excuse - well done. of course it's not a slippery slope, no one would ever abuse this power or take it too far. And we're not already on a slippery slope, this is a totally new phenomenon that started with Mr Potato Head and Dr. Seuss.

don't forget Sinead O'Connor. Uh oh, is this starting to look like a slippery slope?

What book got burned? I remember some Harry Potter burning parties a while back, but that's the only semi-recent example I can think of.

It?s not ?who? it?s ?what? and ?why?. The ?why? can be extrapolated well beyond cartoon characters. The irony is that this CC is selective on ?who? based on their capricious ideas of what ?they? consider ?offensive.?

A cartoon character like Pepe needs cancelling, but actual sexual predators are heroes in their minds, if they are progressive enough, or enable progressivism. Incredibly, a ?rape-culture? cartoon character is harmful, but altering the anatomy of minors is ?healthy? to this crowd.

No. Not a slippery slope. You take a controversial public stance and accept the consequences of your actions.

At the same time, calling someone's employer and trying to get them fired for having a public opinion on something is a cowardly move.

This isn't the same thing as boycotting a company or their advertisers though, which is fair game.

Here is Anita Hammar explaining it:

EDIT: Wow...it was 18 years ago tomorrow.

We got another important anniversary coming up here in a couple of days..

So 11 years from O'Connor to Dixie Chicks and then 18 more years to get to pretending Dr. Seuss is banned when he's the #2 top earning dead artist.

Man, just rollin' down that slope at breakneck speed.

Christians were doing that. Think that's what he meant though?

Yeah, even with the even more recent talk of the author butting heads with the LGBT crowd, I don't think you can call something cancelled when it has an entire land in a theme park. I think Seuss has one too. Might be the same park.

yeah, because nothing happened in between the Dixie Chicks and Dr. Seuss. Cancel culture is the cicada of political discourse.

Slippery slope means it gets worse with time. Not a steady cicada-like drone. What's ramped up is the reaction hyperbole to less and less of a cancelling. Seuss isn't banned or cancelled and it's a go to example now? Sinead and the Dixie Chicks had their careers impacted negatively. Seuss and Looney Tunes are getting reboots.

Just checked the local library's online catalog. Dozen of copies of the 'banned' Seuss books available. About 1/2 checked out.

(took that play from Tinsel's playbook)

that was a reference to the cicada's gestation period, not the noise they make. The reaction and the hyperbole aren't what's ramping up - cancel culture is ramping up. Seuss isn't getting a reboot because the company is suddenly realizing the books they've been publishing and selling for decades are problematic. The woke mob, in this case a bunch of leftist teachers are pressuring the publisher to cancel the books. Their have been similar complaints about the Cat in the Hat, but it will continue to be published for now - how much longer? But the idea that it's Seuss and Looney Tunes since the Dixie Chicks and that it's not getting worse is simply nonsense.

Paint the picture then. Give examples.

When SF changed the names of schools. Sorry, but that IMO is CCRA. Lincoln was not perfect, but he did far more good than evil. Sure he COULD ha e done more, been better...but the guy was assassinated for what he did accomplish so he was pretty much doing as good as anyone possibly could have in those circumstances. He was run through Hell during the Civil War and he paid dearly for doing everything he did. Just because he was not perfect in the eyes of SF's CC today...o would love to see any of those...ahem, ahhh...individuals...do better in his situation.
